I thought it was a poor episode. Kinda amazed that they went with Armisen's producer character as the first skit after the monologue on the season premiere.
You are right, the Ground Zero mosque spot was the highlight. I also enjoyed the 'Boogerman' movie clips and the short 'Actor II Actor' sketch for some reason. Patterson is always good for a laugh, as well.
I've already said my peace with Jay Pharoah (and impressionists in general). Last night is further evidence that a good impression alone doesn't work on SNL. In fact, a shit impression is usually funnier - see Keenan's Tracy Chapman or even Moynihan's Jake the Snake from last season. Pharoah and the like should stick to You Tube.
I completely disagree with almost everything the last poster said.
Ground Zero Mosque is probably the most totally unexpected and shocking thing I've ever seen them do (but maybe I have a short memory). Definitely one of the funniest too. So I agree that it was the highlight.
Patterson vs. Patterson was another jaw-dropping moment and killed in my household. So I agree that was fun too.
Disagree on just about everything else. Actor II Actor is a recurring sketch that is funny the first time you see it. At best. A complete and utter waste of Justin Timberlake when you have him right there, at your disposal.
Boogerman was literally the worst SNL Digital Short of the Andy Samberg era. Ugh. I expect more from them any given week. I certainly expect better than THE WORST EVER for a season premiere.
Jay Pharoah was great. His Will Smith impression from the Will Smith/Denzel YouTube video was better, because it had better context, but he was pretty darn funny on Weekend Update too. His Chris Tucker wasn't half bad either. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him every weekend.
Other highlights: Bosley Medical fake commercial, Poehler back on Weekend Update, Samberg as Brigitte Nielsen, and of course Katy Perry's boobs.
Not bad, but not great. Amy is one of the few that can rise above mediocre material and still make me laugh. Update was great, and we were rolling when both Pattersons walked in front of the camera, even though we saw it coming a mile away.
I was not familiar with Katy Perry (or her aforementioned boobs). I will never look at my 20 month old's Elmo t-shirt the same way again.

Just... just incredible.
I love the David Patterson bits so much, but I thought real Dave was preachy, not funny. However, the interruption of the Zucker fairwell was great (and a good callback to Poehler's last WU).
Pharoah had a terrific Will Smith, but it wasn't, you know, funny. It was a sketch where at the end you felt like applauding, but you never really laughed.
Brigitte Nielsen slayed me.

Apparently the sketch about the ladies with the tiny hats was a rip-off of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! - the linked AV Club article also mentions the Hardcore TV skit.

I'm glad that there is some precedent for it, because that sketch was one of the worst ones I have ever seen. The rest of the show was decent, but not great. I am oddly looking forward to next week to see what they do with Bryan Cranston.
