I've removed the old search page and added the google search bar to the bottom of every post. Let me know if you miss the old search option.

I moved this for a few reasons. First of all, we almost never have more than 40 searches a day using the other method, but we seem to have a number of posts where if people searched first they wouldn't have posted.

Secondly, the Google search is now working, and the way I wsa doing the site search was sub-optimal in terms of performance, so I've decided to take it offline at this time.

Boy, that's ugly.

People who need to search the site certainly aren't going to find the search bar when you ask them to ...click on a thread first?

Let's just bring back the search page and take out the homemade one. In fact, maybe I'll just do that right now myself.

However, the joy of the home-grown version was that it did understand "... in the last x days". Which I quite specifically used often -- just this afternoon, as a matter of fact ...

Something I noticed about the search. I just did a search on the W for "cia.gov" because I hadn't known about the nifty "up-to-date" almanac they had and figured with all the political stuff someone else had probably run across it. From the search someone linked to that in one of the Debate Threads.

However when I click on the link to see what was said, I'm getting no post. The thing I noticed is because of my page preferences there are two pages there. Yet when I check on the google link, it says that the item will be found on page 5 (Which because of my preferences I don't have).

So if you do a search on a long thread, and your preferences for display items per page isn't set to the default, you may have to do a little more poking around to find what you're looking for.

I'm guessing you have the "Show new only" option selected in your profile. If you hit an older link via a search engine, I think you have to click the "Show all" option sometimes.

Actually, that is probably not it at all. I'm not sure what you are saying. I should shut up now.

//Edit: Ok, that's a bug. Until I can fix it, you have to click Show new only, then show all to make the posts show up. I'm not sure why this happens.

I'm guessing it's because the default preference for number of posts per page is 20. So if there are 81 posts, it splits them into 5 pages for the search engines based on default preferences.

My preference is set to 100 so when I go to look at page 5, it thinks it should be showing me posts 401-500 (which don't/didn't exist).

Anyways my temp solution was to guess that since it was looking for it on page 5 it was in the 81-100 range and therefore towards the end of page 1 so I just clicked the "1" link.

Oh, wait, I get it now.

Google sees the site with 20 posts per page. So - their links go to 20 posts per page. This works out fine for people who are not registered because they are using a guest account - 20 posts per page.

When you hit the page it uses your preferences.

So, yeah. That kinda sucks for registered users. I don't know of an easy way around this though.

//edit: I may be able to put something in the thread and threadx code to check for a page number > than the max number of pages that you should see - and if that happens, to put you on page one of the thread. I'm not sure if that is more confusing or not though.

//edit #2: Or, maybe we could use the referral code to revert your number of posts per page to 20 if the referral is from outside of the site. Just for that post, anyway. That's probably the best way to try to do this.

Another way...

If you can already tell that the referral is coming from outside the site (I wasn't sure how the call to Google worked) *and* can tell what my preference for posts per page is you could choose to display page number x based on (int (default preference * given page number) / (my preference) + 1)
