I think leap days make the quick'n'dirty calculation a bit off - Aaron's probably right about the GMT thing, too.
Here's the relevant code...
$age="(".floor((time()-$user[birthday])/86400/365.2425)." years old)";
where time() [current time] and $user[birthday] are in epoch time (number of seconds since Jan 1 1970), 86400 is the number of seconds in a day and 365.2425 is the average number of days in a year
