Okay, I've seen Samoa Joe live at UPW shows and wasn't really impressed. I have read ROH results where they say he's been match of the night. Now he's signed to TNA and apparently it's a big deal. My question is, is Samoa Joe really that good? Granted, I haven't seen the guy since 2000, but back then he didn't really do it for me. Has he really improved to where he could be a star in TNA?

I've seen a few of Joe's matches live at PWG shows here in LA. He won me over the first time I saw him. Hell, the guy is my idol. I could never decide if he would do well outside of the indys. But if they keep him as the brutal ass-kicker he is, people would love the way he just murders his opponents. Not to mention the "OLE!" kick and his dives to the outside would get him noticed. it's too bad I won't be able to see Joe since TNA doesn't have a tv deal anymore. but I hope he shines. he's worked hard and the guy is talented.

What are his moves and stuff? I've seen photos and he seems a little chuncky.

I'd defy you to name anybody who DID look impressive at UPW in 2000 who wasn't Chris Daniels or Mikey Henderson. Also keep in mind, that was essentially his rookie year in the business.

Essentially, Joe's a natural. He picks up everything fluidly and quickly. That wasn't perhaps so evident in the WWF-lite era of 6 minute UPW Sports entertainment.

He is chunky and always will be (He's Samoan for God's sake). He's built like a wrestler used to be built, and not like a bodybuilder (which wouldn't work for his bodytype anyways) Basically, Joe's moves depend on his matches. He adapts with who he's working with and has good chemistry with just about anybody not named Mike Awesome.

He does quite a few power moves & submissions. His finishers & signature spots are:

Island Driver (Mitsuhara Misawa's Emerald Frosion)

Choke Sleeper

Chimeraplex (Rolling German/Dragon/Aztecan Suplex)

CCS (Running enzuigiri)

Powerbomb into STF

The Ole Kick (Set up somebody in a chair outside the ring. Get a running start. Kick so hard that your leg goes through the guardrail.)

You failed to mention his most awesome move, where he just slaps the beejeezus out of his opponent. It's so perfect for his persona, no muss, no fuss, just a series of slaps to the head that send the other guy reeling.

Between Punk going to WWE and Joe splitting time with TNA, things are changing in ROH. At least they got Daniels and Styles back now.

I don't boner out for ROH but he's really that good. There's a natural reaction to his body and look where you go 'this guy is awesome? more like this guy is a fatty.' But then as it turns out, he's great. "Apparently this is a big deal" because of what he did in 2004 as ROH champion. FWIW as a barometer, in the 2004 Observer awards, he finished third for Wrestler of the Year, fifth for Best Worker, and third for Match of the Year.

Months ago, TNA's big idea for Samoa Joe was apparently to make him Jon Dalton's bodyguard, which is clueless even for them, so hopefully they'll try ... better. Wrestling Sonjay Dutt is not really the way I'd book his debut for maximum Impact, but by the current nature of TNA nobody can make an impact no matter how well they're booked, so it doesn't really matter.

As far as Joe and WWE, there was interest in him according to the Observer and they have talked, but there was more interest in C.M. Punk because he's a more natural fit. He would definitely have to change his style, but I think he's good enough that he could adapt even if he wouldn't be able to knock the shit out of people. And obviously he doesn't have anything close to a WWE body so they flinch at that big time. But if they could look past that, his unique look would actually make him stand out in the land of bodybuilders, and a dieted down Samoa Joe would just be weird. He could have his boobs surgically altered for my sake though.

Grubby Long Johns: PWG? As Homer Simpson would say to his brain, explain. Where do they run shows? They still around? I'm down closer to SD and don't know what's going on up north...

Triple M: "I'd defy you to name anybody who DID look impressive at UPW in 2000 who wasn't Chris Daniels or Mikey Henderson. Also keep in mind, that was essentially his rookie year in the business."

Frankie Kazarian was pretty good, that Prototype guy reminded me of a young Sting, and Nathan Jones was...Nathan Jones. You got Chris Daniels. Um, does Mike Modest count? Ryan Sakoda wasn't bad. As far as Samoa Joe goes, I haven't seen him since, which is why I was asking if he really did get that good.

Justin: Thanks. What matches of his would you recommend?

Did Prototype have all that extra mass when you were watching him? Those old pictures of him are really gross when he had all the bulk, especially when you see him today and he's so cut. I guess he was half-machine, so.

I would defer on recommendations to pretty much anybody else in this thread and on this board who have seen a lot more than I have, but the most famous ones must be C.M. Punk 60 minute matches. Of course, just answering the question opens the door for someone who knows better and is weird about it to say "SCOFF, HERE ARE 11 SAMOA JOE MATCHES TWICE AS GOOD, JUST AGAINST HOMICIDE."

I just saw Samoa Joe for the first time ever live this past weekend, and he had one HELLuva stiff fight with the Necro Butcher at the Philly IWA:MS show. The way that they both were going balls-out just made me take notice. I think that some people have overrated the match (it only went 10-15 minutes or so), but it was still a great introduction to Joe. I definitely want to see more from Samoa Joe though.

Joe didn't get REALLY REALLY good until last year or so, I think. You wanna see ALL of his stuff as ROH champ and pretty much all of his IWA:MS stuff too. I'm guessing his PWG stuff is also great too, but I haven't seen much of it.

It'll be interesting to see how he works out in TNA. He could be a credible star for them and a fresh face in the NWA title scene and a guy who could work well with AJ. I do think it was a very very very stupid move to not take the WWE deal, though.

For anybody who would like to check out some more of Samoa Joe (and ROH in general), ROHwrestling.com is having a nice sale on a bunch of their DVDs until sometime tomorrow. Only $10 per show. Here's a link to the announcement, complete with a list of the shows which are included in this: http://rohwrestling.com/latestnews.asp?intCategoryID=1&intArticleID=88

Just go to "Shop Online" on the sidebar, and then click on ROH DVDs.

Echoing Underwater's sentiments, most of Joe's title defenses are in the range of very decent to flatout awesome. Among the shows which are being offered for this sale, I especially recommend his matches vs. Homicide. There's also a few tag matches with AJ Styles as Joe's partner which are great.

Also, here's a link to a highlight video from Samoa Joe's website: http://www.samoajoe.com/videos/JoeHOB.wmv

HBK: Youre flat broke arent you?
MJ: Please let me wrestle on RAW!
HBK: Fine, but I aint wearin no fruity tassels.
MJ: Are these your mirror pants?
HBK: Give me those!
