He's starting at LOW Class A with Peoria of the Midwest League. I'm stunned, in that he's always been a quiet guy, not someone who I would have expected to get back into baseball after retiring.

In terms of whether or not he can do it, I would expect him to be successful. While he was a superstar, he was one who did well based on his work ethic, not based on outstanding athletic ability (IMO). I think this trait would make him more able to teach, and less likely to run into the Larry Bird issue of 'why can't you just shoot like me'.

knew I should've gotten the ticket plan with all the Peoria games, so I could watch Ryno...stand in the third base coaching box and sign autographs before the game.

Sandberg asked for an interview when the MLB Cubs job came open, and they said he needed to have at least some experience in the minor leagues. Didn't figure he'd actually go get it.

He's been helping out in Spring Training the last few years (he lives in Arizona anyway), so he's got some experience teaching baseball, but the worry is just what you'd said, that he's too quiet of a guy to be a good manager. Guess we get to find out.

If he's any good, he's immediately the top candidate to replace Pinella when he leaves.

I hope he's good (The Cubs need good managers in their farm), but like a lot of big-time stars, he was on the field all the time, not watching the games over and over again from the dugout. The best managers are guys like Pinnela - great player, but usually not great enough to play every day.

A Comparison

Lou played 18 seasons. In only 1 of those did he have 150+ games. He never once had 600ABs in a season. And, especially in his last few years, he was often the DH. Lots of bench time.

Ryno played 16 seasons, all with the Cubs. (except his cup of coffee with the Phillies in '81.). He was in more that 15 games 12 of those seasons, and had of 600 ABs in 9 of them. and he sat out a season in there.

While Ryne had Jim Frey to emulate, he also had Zimmer, Jim Riggleman, Gene Michael and Tom Treblehorn

Sweet Lou had Bob Lemon, Billy Martin, Jack McKeon, Bill Virdon, Alvin Dark, Yogi!, and Gene Michael (Ryno/Lou Symmetry - catch it!) as managers.

I hope he's great. But name me many stars who have gone on to be great managers. Not Ted Wlliams. Frank Robinson hasn't won anything. Pete Rose wasn't bad - when he wasn't bettin' on 'em.

They don't have enough time watching - and they don't get traded as much, so they don't see all the different ways to manage.
