"For whatever it's worth, as of this week WWE believes they have their WrestleMania main event."
- Bryan Alvarez, Tuesday afternoon

At the tapings for the 15th anniversary of Smackdown (aired but recorded Monday), the Rock and Triple H had a confrontation talking about headlining the first Smackdown and teased wrestling each other again at Wrestlemania. According to the Observer, this is a tease with a purpose. Batista vs. HHH had been talked about, but Batista's GOTG success might've made his schedule far less free.

Rock/HHH was a backup plan last year to the idea of an Austin/HHH match for control of the company between Vince and the Authority, but both passed on doing the show. (Why Batista never ended up in that spot while Punk was moved out of the Orton title match to the HHH match, I couldn't say.)

Sting is the second special star the show will be built around. Sting wants, and has always wanted, to work with Undertaker. Taker has said he doesn't think he can do it. Undertaker and Steve Austin having final matches in 2016 at Texas Stadium are longer-range ideas. Sting's second choice is Triple H, but you could always feed a heel like Bray Wyatt (freaky Crow feud) or Randy Orton (legend killer feud) to him.

Hulk Hogan has done interviews pushing for a retirement match with John Cena, claiming he could pass the physical he couldn't have passed last year. Hulk Hogan said this though, so, you know. Rusev being built up for Cena all the way to Wrestlemania is something that had been talked about.

As of right now, Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar is still the planned co-main event, and the fans will ultimately tell the tale of that one with how they react to Dean Ambrose and Daniel Bryan. Right now Brock Lesnar is not scheduled for another PPV match until a rematch with Cena at the Royal Rumble. The Royal Rumble is going to be 40 men again this year, which I guess means a decent number of NXT guys in the Rumble.

Really hope Rock does the match, if only to save Reigns from having so much of the show depend on his being as over as they wanted him to be.

And it makes it easier for them to add Bryan and/or Ambrose to the mix when he gets booed at the Rumble.

HHH/Rock is a match, I want to see again just for nostalgia sake, but Hunter shouldn't win. It really needs to be the end of the Authority storyline. Maybe the winner gets to decide who runs the WWE and Rock busts out Commissioner Foley. That would be the perfect end considering they continue to blow the end to this now over a year storyline.

If you take anything away from this is they have zero faith in their full time roster. Just none. Cena/Rusev is their only full time match being considered. Sting/Taker would be nice, but now that the Streak is over, its kind of a meh match between too old guys. Lesnar not wrestling til the Rumble is some high level bullshit. Ambrose will replace Reigns, because Ambrose has IT. Whatever IT is, he has it and Reigns as good as he is, he has not connected with the fans as Dean has done.

The man in the cold is going to be Bryan. I am sure he will find someone to wrestle and try to steal the show. Who that lucky bastard will be..I have no idea. Maybe Rollins.

What if the compromise for Sting is to team up with Undertaker, in part because neither guy may be able to carry a singles bout on his own? Sting/Taker vs. Kane/Orton is a natural fit....that could be Kane's own retirement match against his 'brother' and Orton could take the chance to kill two legends at once.

In my perfect world, however, Taker would sit out WM31 aside from a *GONG* and a chokeslam on Lesnar in the title match. It'd come after Brock cheated to seemingly have Reigns/Ambrose/Bryan/whomever beaten, and then Taker comes in to even things out (and get revenge for last year).

Rather than have Cena/Rusev, wouldn't it make a bit more sense to save Rusev's first defeat for Reigns or Bryan? With crowds lukewarm on Reigns, they'd heat up for him very quickly if he's pitted against the most natural heel on the roster. As for Bryan, a Rusev match would give him something appropriately major to do after all his time on the injured list. OR, now that I think about it, Ambrose would be great as Rusev's conqueror too.

Why not do Sting vs Cena? Their careers are similar in that they're both franchises of their respective companies, Cena can carry the athletic portion of the match, and it's a match with marquee value.

Cena/Rusev would be a waste, and Cena's already taken his "Feud with up-and-coming heel" spot at WM30 against Wyatt. Give Cena a big match this time around.

EDIT: I have zero problems with Rock/HHH as an attraction match. Especially if Rock gets his WrestleMania 2000 win back.

I'm really hoping that either Ambrose or Bryan sneak into Reigns' spot by WrestleMania, but I think WWE is going to be bull-headed about this.

They have three legitimate options for guys to beat Lesnar:

- Bryan is proven, but he's already had his year and may be seen as "injury prone." Bryan vs Lesnar would probably be the best possible match with the best possible story, but who needs that stuff when you've got toys to sell?

- Ambrose is obvious. And perfect. A little TOO perfect. There's really no good reason not to have the perfect dark horse challenger who connects with the fans, the renegade gunslinger stepping into town and fighting tooth and nail to take down the intimidating monster and be a real hero.

- And then Reigns, I guess. He has a cool look and would give them some points for long term planning. Considering the WWE just LOVES "comeback from injury Royal Rumble wins" and they just announced that the Rumble will be 40 men again this year (more for Reigns to throw out and break the record), I think Reigns vs Lesnar is what we're looking at. We just have to hope that WWE and Reigns develop his character before then. He ain't no Cena.

Sting/Cena is a good idea. The crowd's anti-Cena vibe will help cover up any disenchantment if Sting can't quite bring it in the ring. Plus, it leads to heels attacking them post-match and the two faces teaming up to clean house and shake hands afterwards.

*Sting/Cena
*Rock/HHH
*Ambrose/Rusev...Dean's consolation prize
*Lesnar/Bryan...I think WWE will let the "injury-prone" Bryan have the big Lesnar bout since this'll realistically be third in importance on the card given the other two big legends matches. For his performance last year, Bryan can be built as another WM icon who can rise to the occasion and give Lesnar a fight.
*Rollins/Reigns for the briefcase earlier in the show...there's a heavy hint that the winner will cash in THAT NIGHT, so we get added intrigue about what exactly will happen over the course of the evening.

The question I ask is do you really want to watch the build up and dueling promos between Rock and HHH for weeks on end? It sounds terrible.

If they go serious with Rock-HHH, let them cut some mean-ass promos tapping into the friction we all know really exists between the two, it could be a great reminder of how good these two were. If they go Entertainment Tonight with it, silly jokes and celebrity cameos, it'll be a nightmare.

My ideal card, based on these whispers:

Rock Vs. HHH
Sting Vs. John Cena (Cena really is the best option if HHH and Taker are off the table, and unlike those too people are guaranteed to cheer Sting against Cena)
WWE Title Match: Brock Lesnar (c) Vs. Roman Reigns Vs. Seth Rollins Vs. Dean Ambrose (trying to do Reigns one-on-one is going to be death, but they've got the briefcase and they can easily figure out a way to insert Ambrose. Voila, the most dominant solo guy faces the most dominant one-time stable, with all sorts of cool triple team spots and betrayals and blood feud stuff between all four competitors.)
Daniel Bryan Vs. Rusev (little guy making the big guy tap out to save America, and it's a great consolation prize for Bryan)

I'm interested in seeing just how off-the-cuff and insecure HHH would get during them

Ugh. I just don't want to see Cena do weeks of "I respect you soooo much" and playing this respectful great guy who is total cheeseball that no one likes. It won't get over with the kiddie crowd either because they won't really know Sting. Cena has to have an edge of heelishness for that match to work. I'd much prefer something like Cena saying "You were great once, but if you force this to happen I'm going to have to hurt you. I'm going to harm your legacy. Don't make me do that. Accept reality."

They're not seriously going to get into HHH actively burying Rock politically early (while it was still feasible), throwing a fit when Bret refused take the IC title from him, and making curious, quasi-racial shots at him like calling him "fuzzy top". And if they show that minstrel show where dX "impersonated" the NoD, that may finally be the thing to drive me off this product forever. Also Rock needs to be down about 20-25 pounds from where he is now to do any kind of watchable match.

I think it would be pretty easy for HHH to go even further than Cena did in pointing out that The Rock only turned to wrestling after he failed at what he really wanted to do, then only comes back when he wants to get a pop, using the fans and only giving them the same tired, recycled material in return.

And that's why it's not going to happen. WWE wants Cena to at least get the "we boo you but deep down we respect you" reaction at WrestleMania, and they're just not going to point him in a position where he's definitely going to get booed. And he'd definitely get booed against Sting at WrestleMania - a crowd with a lot of hardcore fans who will have fond memories of Sting - no matter how they set it up. Sting & Cena versus some people seems like a more likely idea but there's no tag team really on their level.

Why burn two of the four potential legend participants against each other? It only makes sense if we get Rock or Hunter vs. Sting. Something new. Otherwise, pit the old guard against the younger guys. Give us a new match, not a legends nostalgia match.

I really really really don't want to see Rock/Hunter again. Rock/Rusev worked for two reasons:
1) It was a novel confrontation; and
2) Rock showed he could still bring it physically (albeit in moderate doses).

Spread that over four matches, and you got a hot card. Then add Brock. Then add Bryan. Then add Wyatt.

That's a show I'll pay for.

I know we're talking about an awful lot of legends/part-timers when I'd love to just see Dolph and Cesaro pushed up the card, but do we know if Angle is definitely never going to be in WWE again? Angle vs. Rusev seems obvious.

Bleh. Sting can't go at a Wrestlemania level anymore. Neither can Hogan. Neither can Undertaker; the Brock match was sad to watch up until the shock ending. Star power and name value can only carry you so far. It would be nice if people didn't get old, but they do.

Brock, Rock, and HHH are more than enough part-timers for one show. I get that all three are bigger stars than any full-time WWE performer (even Cena isn't on their level, IMO) but if the old stars never leave, the new stars will always be in their shadow.

    Bleh.

Bleh is right. I need to feel like the outcome of the matches matters, kayfabe. Matching these oldsters up against current stars would be fresh and exciting. Oldster v. oldster matches, on the other hand, just strike me as low-stakes and totally skippable unless the novelty or nostalgia is overwhelming (Sting/Undertaker). Who cares if Rock beats HHH, who cares if HHH beats Rock, and who's excited to see them go through the motions against each other for old time's sake? (I think not many people, but I could certainly be wrong?) I get that Rock might only be willing to work with big-name opponents, and a Seth Rollins match might not appeal to him, and at least HHH/Rock gets him in the door. Aside from that, all that match will accomplish is getting wiseasses to cheer for HHH for the first time in ages.

They just announced that the Rumble is in, of all places, Philadelphia. Clueless? Intentional?

You can actually hear him winking behind his shades, but Rock says he's not doing Mania.

No, but Rock was done and gone and out after getting hurt in his last Mania match (storify.com). if he's feeling up to another match, fine. But not against Hunter.

Hunter was solid in his Mania match with Bryan. He can go with his very reduced performing schedule.

But I don't wanna see them against each other. I'm old enough to remember all that before. If I'm going to watch Mania via the Network, I can just was easily see all those old matches there. Gimme something new for my Mania money.
