I've turned a corner on Cena/Bella vs. Miz/Maryse. While I'm not thrilled about benching Ambrose and Renee, Cena still lets you pay off the Daniel Bryan stuff, and there are at least three really organic ways to get to the match. And while he's not an Indy Superstar, Miz has become an Internet Darling (no judgement there; I also think he's great), which lines him up along Cena's retirement run. Besides, I feel like the two of them deserve a Mania match that's actually any good to make up for the last one.

Cena/Nikki-Miz/Maryse is really underwhelming at first glance, but when you consider what a much-deserved upgrade it is for The Miz and how they can possibly pay off the Bryan/Miz feud with this, there's a lot that could work out here.

I guess that leaves us with the potential Shane/AJ match and Ambrose... getting a much-needed vacation?

I LOVE THE CENA MIXED TAG

I mean, it's perverse as all get-out to go from the Cena/Styles contemporary classic to Shane McMahon and a mixed tag with the Miz. But it's just so endearingly weird. It also represents a shockingly logical payoff to the Bryan/Miz longterm feud. And Cena proposing to Nikki (to boos) would certainly be a Wrestlemania moment for the ages.

I wanted to see Ambrose and Renee do stereo pendulum wackylines

Still don't think Undertaker/Reigns is a patch on Undertaker/Cena. The only upside being Reigns is more genuinely loathed right now and maybe, maybe, maybe the match is the impetus for the turn.

Observer says initial timeframe for Rollins was eight weeks, so he could conceivably still do it. Honestly, it's better for him to be off of TV based on how they've screwed up everything with him.

Observer-listed matches
Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar (Universal Title)
Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns
Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt (WWE Title)
Seth Rollins vs. Triple H (???)
Shane McMahon vs. AJ Styles
John Cena and Nikki Bella vs. Miz and Maryse (!!!!!!)
Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens
Shaquille O'Neal vs. Big Show
Bayley vs. Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax vs. Charlotte (Bayley wins, Sasha turns on her the next night)

With Nikki out of the picture, Becky Lynch can actually chase her own title to Mania. Asuka debut on Tuesday after WM?

Presuming Ambrose and Ziggler will return to the Intercontinental Breakfast hell that Miz has miraculosly graduated from. I like the idea of having the cruiserweights do the big ladder match this year, as long as they limit it to the good ones and not all of them. Corbin either takes the IC, or are he and Strowman supposed to be the tentpoles of the Andre battle royal?

Is this show stupid? In many places, yes. But I think it's still up on last year just by virtue of creating a bunch of bizarre matches up and down instead of the entire thing revolving around one massive dead-end.

I'd hate to have two non-singles matches for the two women title matches because it reeks of previous years when the women were an afterthought and thrown together, but I think the Smackdown title has to be Alexa vs. Becky vs. Mickie. Becky vs. Mickie has to be at Wrestlemania and there isn't anything else to do with Alexa. Honestly, they deserve a three-way more than the Raw women deserve a four-way.

Asuka on Smackdown would be fine but I'd prefer moving Paige to Smackdown (with Emma finally showing up on Raw). Maybe Smackdown can use their rehabilitation powers on Paige.

I am, uh, decidedly less enthused about the Cena Mixed Tag Match. To begin with, the idea that Nikki "301 Day Title Reign" Bella needs a big WrestleMania farewell match is kind of bonkers. Nikki surprisingly upped her game when she came back and ended up vastly better than Brie, but she's not Lady Undertaker or anything where she has this legacy of big-time matches and is owed some notable send-off.

Conversely, man, Cena owes us. Dude has been spending 2-3 years of Legacy Making in his John Cena Indy Fantasy Camp by remolding himself as Big Match John against All of Everyone's Favorite Wrestlers, but now that the big show (not The Big Show) is coming around and it desperately, fatally needs a Big Match John Big Match to anchor it, he's gonna go fill the Dolph Ziggler Match spot at Mania instead?

I mean, look at this card:

So current champs Cena and Owens are both going to drop their titles between now and WrestleMania? Cena's Actually Historic Record-Tying 16th Reign lasts two weeks and ends via Hillybilly Magic? The Universal Title gets defended near the top of the card in a, what, seven minute match where both guys retire within a month? The Real Actual World Heavyweight Title gets defended halfway through the card? AJ Styles, the 2016 Greatest Wrestler In The World gets the Oh My God King Shane McMahon Actually Is As Good As AJ Styles match? Dean Ambrose, the only actual main event face on your roster for all of 2016 doesn't even get booked until the go-home show? When is Shaq even showing up? And you're counting on Roman to carry Undertaker?

That's a card definitely in need of one of the following: Cena/Styles in an Ultimate Blow-off Wrestle Kingdom Showdown match, Cena/Undertaker in a Cena Actually Cements His Legacy As A Great Worker By Carrying 2017 Undertaker match or Cena/Joe in a Cena Graduates From John Cena Indy Fantasy Camp match.

I'd even settle for a Styles/Orton match (which, again, don't take the belt off AJ for a two-week Cena run), with Orton playing heel and AJ as reluctant face. Styles is the most RKO-able person in the company and I feel like they could pull off some kind of miracle match that would be better than Orton/Wyatt.*

Seriously, look at that card. It's painfully obvious: the only match on there that they put any planning into and has been booked longer than a month and a half ago is the friggin' HHH match. The retired son-in-law who already has his own vanity promotion to burnish his ego is the only person they can be bothered to book for.

What even headlines the card as it currently stands? Brock/Goldberg as the headliner is insanity (it got booed out of the building over a decade ago when Goldberg had cardio)...Roman/Undertaker could be a disaster...

I mean, it's still probably not as bad as WrestleMania 32, but at least that had the (unfulfilled) promise of Brock/Ambrose going in?

Only because The Massive Dead-End's handpicked opponent got hurt again.

OK, OK, you mean Roman, but on paper, Roman/Undertaker, to me, has more potential, theoretical upside than Roman/HHH did. There was literally no way that Main Event HHH was going to get a good match with Roman, who requires an Elite Ultraworker (Styles, in theory Cena) or Five Other Guys (a Shield match, or still-gives-a-shit Brock Lesnar, who is dead now, but was the equivalent of Five Other Guys) to main event a big PPV. Undertaker's shot, yeah, but there's at least the tiniest sliver of hope that there's still some Magic Zombie Dust out there that could impose a structure on this match that brings out the potential Reigns has, and again, Reigns ending Undertaker's career via cheating or just horrible brutality means we could finally get fans throwing garbage in the ring again, which is better than that sleeping pill abomination from last year, where HHH imposed his structure of "long, boring, grinded out match that utilizes zero of his opponent's strengths."

Which leads me to my point: can we please officially enshrine HHH as the Worst WrestleMania Main Eventer? HHH/Reigns at 32 was garbage. HHH/Orton at 25 sucked. HHH/Jericho at 18 stunk and had no business being the main event.

(And then you have the near main-events done in HHH Main Event Style like HHH/Lesnar at 29 and HHH/Booker at 19 that also sucked.)

Guy is the reverse HBK. Stick him in the Shane match.

*I reserve the right to go all-in on Orton/Wyatt if Randy finally becomes the Avatar of the Snake God and it turns out that the true Eater of Worlds is, in fact, the terrible Snake God that speaks to Randy telepathically and it is forced to choose between its worshippers and the match ends with a giant snake eating the loser like it's all Beetlejuice up in that shit.

Holy shit. Yes, stick him in the Shane match. It's logical, based on the brand split, and it solves two problems at once. Plus, you can make it an overbooked clusterfuck, which does a lot to cover up for both guys. They get their cool WrestleMania entrances, we get the possibility of a match that, while not "good," per se, might actually be fun, and two much better wrestlers get freed up to have much better matches.

Give HHH Shane, and Styles gets Nakamura. They need at least one match that could feasibly break 4-stars.

A HHH/Shane match could even play to HHH's ego by having him totally definitely winning until Rollins pops up to cost him the match. Everyone's happy.

There actually are some people reporting that Shane could be in the Triple H match now. If that is the case then absolutely call an audible and move Styles to the title match. I'm with Dr. U, I think Orton and Wyatt could be good, but Orton/Styles has a lot of potential for a great match. Yeah, Orton has gone through stretches that bore us at times but if you put him in the ring with one of your best talents he can work magic with them. Think Wrestlemania 31 vs. Seth Rollins. I also think this is your best star power match up, or at least out of any new combinations. I actually assumed this would be the Wrestlemania feud all the way back to the brand split since they were already working on Cena/Styles.

Only problem with HHH vs. Shane is doesn't the person who wrestles HHH have to go through Samoa Joe? I mean, Shane's not beating Joe...right? Tell me I'm right. Please?

Perhaps Shane can get someone to tag with him against Triple H/Joe? Ambrose maybe?

The rumor is that Brock/Goldberg is the "real" main event of the show. I think that's dumb, and gives me vibes of Hogan/Warrior II, where you know it's this telegraphed match that only exists to give the heel their win back. I can't think of a reason why I'd actually want to see that. Even if Brock wins, the feud still ends with Goldberg up 2-1.

To be fair, Heyman did do a good job of selling this match on Raw.

This is a weird card, but it's also a more interesting card than WM32. This is the third year in a row there was a much more obvious WrestleMania card that could have worked that they just messed up to no end by overthinking things, or deliberately sabotaging it.

I don't know if this counts as being charitable or not, but I'm inclined to go with underthinking it/not thinking about it (aside from HHH locking his match in stone) instead of overthinking it.

How else do you explain ending up with Orton in your match for the Real Belt at Mania after booking him to be hideously, savagely annihilated by Lesnar at Summerslam, and then have Lesnar get beaten in a literal minute by Goldberg at Survivor Series?

If anyone cared about the fate of anyone but HHH and, to a lesser extent, Roman Reigns and Nikki Bella, you could have had Lesnar murder death kill Randy like he did, have that lead into Broken Randy Orton being brainwashed by Bray as he eventually would be and have had Broken Randy, backed by the Wyatts, take out Brock (paying off last year's abandoned Wyatts vs. Lesnar feud), and have that be Brock's excuse for being blitzed by a suddenly returning Goldberg.

I literally just thought of that now, and it solves multiple issues: Orton recovers from that bloodletting by being transformed into a terrifying snakeman controlled by a monster and goes into WrestleMania at full power; Lesnar gets an in-story excuse for getting crushed by Old Man Goldberg and we're working a "Lesnar is scared and wounded" angle for the first time in his career; Orton is primed with an eight-month storyline to either turn on Bray (he made a monster he could not control!) at WrestleMania OR to go after Best Wrestler In The World AJ Styles (who could still be champ and now you have Broken Randy to shift AJ into a face role) for the belt OR you actually do Orton/Cena but now it's Broken Randy (who gets the belt before Mania) vs. Cena, who would be going for the record-tying 16th reign.

HHH/Taker 3 was an awful, glacial match and the less said about HHH/Sting the better.

They are collectively the black hole -- setting them against each other created an inescapable gravitational pull of tone-deaf garbage in both the build-up and the show itself.

Even with RRHHH's combined go-away heat, Ambrose winning the title from the corporate champion and some kind of Reigns/Lesnar rematch (since Lesnar only existed to destroy every non-Roman full-timer while waiting for him to get over) probably would've made for a real crowd-pleasing card and show. But HHH/Reigns "Welcome To My House" not divided against itself could not stand.

The ultimate karmic challenge would be Rollins not getting cleared with Balor coming back in March -- HHH has to face the demon in a similar "NXT dad vs. his favorite boy" dynamic, and put his money where his mouth is recoiling in terror at the ooWAAA scary entrance. Triple H having to sell for his own creation to simultaneously strengthen and weaken Triple H is the ultimate paradox.

I will try. The Orton achievements are a financial and ego-placating make-good for physically imperiling him. That's what I'm running with.

All the talent in the world and this is what we get. Its time to ship Vince to a home and HHH/Steph to Arkham Asylum where they belong.
