| #1 Posted on 19.2.02 2154.28 | Watching HHH forced to defend and win back his spot takes away some of the "specialness" of his Rumble win.
Since the winner of the Royal Rumble often loses #1 contendership or at least is forced to defend that position at NWO or on television, why doesn't the WWF move the Rumble to February?
I assume there will be realignment of the PPV schedule after the split, and I think this is one of the first things that should be addressed.
Since we've seen Survivor Series moved from Thanksgiving, there is precedent for moving established events. Tradition be damned.

| #2 Posted on 19.2.02 2210.28 | Survivor Series was moved from Thanksgiving, but it's still in November. That was a good move on their part, because I doubt the WWF stars were happy to be at work thousands of miles from home on Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving eve.
And the WWF title shot stip has been going on for 10 years. Of that, only two winners didn't get their WM title shot (Steve Austin in 1997, and Vince McMahon in 1999), one of which was because the title was vacated beforehand. Yeah, the shot's been up for grabs a few times, but it spices things up, and has never actually changed the main event to the best of my foggy recollection.

Just for the hell of it, here is how Rumble winners have faired at Mania:
Jim Duggan: No title shot John Studd: No title shot Hulk Hogan: Lost to Ultimate Warrior Hulk Hogan: Defeated Sgt. Slaughter Ric Flair: Lost to Randy Savage Yokozuna: Beat Bret Hart, then Lost to Hulk Hogan Lex Luger: Lost to Yokozuna Bret Hart: Defeated Yokozuna Shawn Micheals: Lost to Diesel Shawn Micheals: Defeated Bret Hart Steve Austin: No title shot Steve Austin: Defeated Shawn Micheals Vince McMahon: No title shot The Rock: Lost to Triple H Steve Austin: Defeated The Rock
So, rumble winners are 6-6 (including 5-4 since the #1 contenders stip was added) in Wrestlemania WWF Title matches, with four getting no title shot at all. Only 4 of the 14 winners have walked out of Mania with the WWF title, including 4 of 10 with the #1 contenders stip.
Caring is the first step towards disappointment. |
