Could this actually be true?

At first, they declared Batista the winner, but since it was clear Batista fell first, Vince called an audible from the back.

He went ahead with a tie storyline with Raw referees declaring Batista the winner and Smackdown referees declaring Cena the winner. Vince also decided to come down personally and direct the rest, and of course was injured as he came into the ring. He directed everyone from his seated position, including the ending that did go down, with Batista tossing Cena relatively quickly.

I'm pretty sure Dave doesn't make up alternate Royal Rumble finishes for hilarities sake, so yes, that's probably what happened. That's the sort thing that happens when you have sources.

Edit: ALTHOUGH, if he DID, that would indeed be hilarious.

I actually just watched the end of the Rumble last night and it's pretty clear that it wasn't supposed to end like that. When they first fall out of the ring, the refs look confused and RAW ref Jack Doan says Batisa won. SD ref Jimmy Korderas also is right on camera saying Cena hit first and Batista won. Jack Doan then listens to his ear piece and tells Charles Robinson to raise Cena's hand and thus begins the RAW vs. SD finish.

I have to say, for a botched ending, it came off pretty well. Cena and Batista couldn't have accidentally fallen out of the ring together any more perfectly. It could've been much worse and much more obvious that Batista hit first, and then what would they have done? Then the whole improvised thing where Cena and Batista threw each other out afterwards was also quite good. Shows what these guys can do when something goes wrong and they have to think on their feet like that.

The fact that we're two weeks out and only now is this becoming common knowledge warrants a nod to everybody involved. This could very easily have wound up a disaster, yet they covered it up quite well on the fly given that nobody knew about it right away.

It's barely over one week, though...and I'm sure some Observer subscribers knew before it had even been a week, not that I don't disagree that the improvisation was part well-done and part dumb luck.

"The fact that we're two weeks out and only now is this becoming common knowledge"

I thought it became common knowledge on this very board five days ago (four days after the Rumble and one day after the WON was mailed out). Nevertheless, the sentiment -- that it looked so much like a genuine scripted finish that no one thought for a second that anything went wrong except for Vince getting hurt -- is certainly true.

Damn. Its funny that the botched ending not only made the two guys look stronger but was also done better than the original end sounds.
Maybe with Batistas latest results in mind, he is becoming the 'monster' and squashing everything that moves (and everything that doesn't, just in case).
I honestly thought that the ending was scripted because they didn't want Cena to 'lose' the Rumble therefore giving him a better springboard for a WM title match with JBL (hopefully). The old 'I didn't really lose, I was screwed' type thing.
Props to the two guys for the throwing each other out while the decision was being made.

You know I watched that ending several times in real-time and in slow motion last night and it looks like a real finish.
The only thing that's a bit awry is when the SD ref(can't remember his name) declares Cena as hitting first.

Than the Raw ref tells him to raise Cena's arm(after getting something in his earpiece). So, than that SD ref argues Cena as the winner.

If indead the double-fall wasn't planned it was done excellently. Cena deserves some props for that. If Batista woulda landed without Cena..well,that would have been a bad thing.

Batista does seem a little upset too, when they both land. But, that could be scripted emotion or an actual "damn, we screwed up."

And, of course there's Vince. Wont comment on that.

At least Cena and/or Batista didn't have an ear-to-ear smile like Snitsky did on that one table spot from Raw.

I tried not to think that the ending was another Luger/Hart finish and apparently it wasn't.

I agree with CRZ...all of it was part dumb luck/well done.

I'm just glad it turned out all well on the up and up. So they didn't have have a cross brand match or something strange at NWO to fix Cena hitting first.

Scripted or not it certainly looked awkward. To me it looked like Batista hit first since Cena's feet were like over Batista's shoulders.

Had it been scripted I don't think they would've restarted the match and had a more decisive finish. Or if they did restart Vince would've come out with his entrance music.

McMahon's tumble definitely wasn't scripted .
