EDIT: A link to the story.

| #2 Posted on 1.2.05 1540.44 | Instant Rating: 5.29 | Well, I know a few Laker fans who've called him "Rudy Three" and don't think so highly of him - but, damn, even despite his health being questionable, this is pretty much out of left field.
His health, although not a relapse of bladder cancer, and dissatisfaction with the way the Lakers are playing contributed to the decision, sources told Bucher.
I have a feeling you-know-who is going to catch hell for this - even though it wasn't really his fault this time.

Well, this was his guy. I don't even fault the front office, though, because they went with this knowing that health issues could arrise, but why should a guy be denied that opportunity.
Now if the real reason is that he's quitting on the team, that's another story.

| #4 Posted on 1.2.05 2030.39 | Instant Rating: 4.95 | ESPN Radio 710 (Los Angeles) & their callers have been trash talking & speculating all of this all afternoon/evening. I'll respond to some of the things they (radio staff & callers) are talking about:
I dont think you-know-who had anything to do with it. A couple of the Laker "insiders" they've had on the radio today say that they got along like gangbusters.
The Lakers did not secretly fire him. As a matter of fact, as of right now (6:26pm PT), he has not even officially quit yet, and the official statement from the Lakers is "Resigning is one of the options Rudy is talking about, but he has not made any final decision yet" (which still leaves room for him to take an extended leave of absense for health reasons). I cant imagine the Lakers would say that if he was fired.
Rudy is not quitting because the Lakers suck. Contrary to what everyone keeps saying (not necessarily here, mind you), the Lakers arent doing half bad, all things considered. The team is exactly where everyone (including Laker personnel) said they would be at the beginning of the season: Barely above .500, hanging onto the #7/#8 spot in the west. Sure I'd like them to be kicking ass & taking names like the last 4-5 years, but this just isnt any of those teams. Based on the guys they have now, they're doing just fine.
That's all I got.

Yeah. True story: I was in Ashburnham, MA, in a ninth-grade algebra class in 1987 when the class was discussing the upcoming Pistons-Celtics Eastern Conference final. The consensus was that the Celtics were going to win, of course, but one of the guys said "Celtics in 3" and I felt like the overconfidence was so rampant that I had to diffuse it by announcing "Pistons in 6". Unwittingly I was pegged as the Pistons fan, so I had to defend my pick and Voila! the Pistons are my team. They would've won, too, if either Isiah's pass doesn't get stolen OR Dantley and the Microwave don't collide on the floor during Game 7. I even wore #10 and #11 on our stupid alternating home-and-away with different jersey numbers basketball uniform my sophomore year in honor of Dennis Rodman and Zeke. (Thankfully I moved before my junior year to a school where one's number was the same no matter where we were playing.)

As interesting as that would be, I've always been skeptical of college-turned-pro coaches, as they could easily turn out to be failures like Tim Floyd and Rick Pitino.
Plus, there's that pesky little issue about the six-year extension that Calhoun just signed with UCONN.

Agreed. Especially when the root of Phil's complaints (i.e. Kobe) is still front and center. Please spare us false hopes and just go after Michael Cooper already.

Honestly, after what happened in the Finals last year, it wouldn't surprise me if he went back to the Purple and Gold. ANYTHING is possible.
And if you really think about it, despite Red Holzman and the fact that he was part of the Knicks' last championship team (yes, it has been that long) why in the hell would he choose the Knicks over the Lakers (despite you-know-who of course)?
Phil isn't known for coaching a team in the rebuild process to any of those nine rings he's got.

Don't forget that the Lakers are also in rebuild mode, so if Phil isn't into that sort of thing, there's a good chance he'll likely stay retired. But I wouldn't count out the Knicks just yet.

Phil's girlfriend (who is also Owner Jerry Buss' daughter & holds a high ranking position within the Laker orgianzation [but not involved in anyway with players/personell]) Jeannie Buss is a frequent guest on the ESPN Radio afternoon show here in Los Angeles. She was on last week & the hosts were playfully giving her a hard time about Phil's plans & the Knicks rumors, and she said she asked him if he would ever come back and he gave her a list of 3 teams he would consider returning to coach, and the Lakers were one of them (no word on the other 2).
Then yesterday, they had Tex Winter (creator of the almighty Triangle Offense & former assistant coach under Jackson) on as a guest & he said he had a conversation with Phil over lunch a few months ago where they discussed the current Laker roster & how "intriuging" it would be to coach them using the Triangle, and even alluded to the fact that the Triangle would work BETTER with the current roster and WITHOUT Shaq (His words were "and we wouldnt have to deal with Shaq"). The hosts went nuts & Tex quickly played it off (the conversation with Phil) as nothing serious, just a couple of old basketball guys talking basketball over a meal.
Please believe the speculation is RUNNIN' WILD, brother

Also, a dude at Slam Magazine had an interesting take on this whole thing - amounting it to more LakerDrama(tm):
http://slamonline.com/links/01312005/
This whole Rudy T thing. I think the Lakers just need attention. They’ve been constantly in the spotlight every night for the past 5 years at least. Whether it was “look how great they are”, or “Wow, what a mess, I can’t believe they’re still winning” or “Kobe: The greatest/shadiest”, they were always a must-watch team. It was still interesting to see how Kobe would play this year in his new role, but with him chilling on the bench in street clothes, there was really no special reason to watch the Lakers. So, they found their way back on the front pages again. Not just because Rudy is stepping down, but because of the search for a new coach. All of the old questions come back. Who can coach Kobe? Who can handle the pressure? Does a high profile job need a high profile person? Oh, The Lakers. The DRAMA KINGS! Now everyone is chasing rumors about who that next coach will be. I can’t believe Phil Jackson is being mentioned, even as a joke. Come on, that’s too crazy, even for them. I had to ask my Laker insider, SLAM Senior Editor Ryan Jones if this could ever happen. He was pretty convinced that it won’t, and he knows a lot more than me.

... I'd LOVE to see Cooper coach the Lakers. He might be able to teach this team to play a little defense once in a great while.
