In the world of RPGs there are really only two big boys, Square and Enix. Well, that list just shrank a bit. RPGamer has just received word from Japan that the two videogame giants are going to be merging. The merger is set to take place starting November 26, and by April 1, 2003, the new company will be known as Enix Square. This merger is reportedly taking place to position the joint company as a serious competitor to the large third party developers such as Electronic Arts.
"In the ever-changing world of entertainment software, the most important issue facing companies today is how quickly they can grow as the marketplace and opportunities for business expand and diversify," said a financial statement released by Enix today. "Enix and Square's response to this issue is the merger announced today...Together, we will aim to become producer of the highest-quality digital contents in the world."
Officially, Square is being disbanded and Enix will be absorbing the company's assets and liabilities, while Square's current president, Yoichi Wada, will head up Enix Square. The two companies are planning a press conference for 3:30pm on Tuesday. We will have the details from this event as soon as they are available.

Yeah, sure, I guess. Personally, I wouldn't mind Final Fantasy taking a break for a while, maybe in favour of new Chrono titles (something playable this time), or a revamped, PSO-style 3D multiplayer Secret of Mana title.
What the hell, I'll give this a go.

Well, actually Chrono Break is being made as we speak, but I think I heard the game won't be out until 2004 (or maybe 2005?). I'm hoping that they put more storyline in this game...Chrono Cross was disappointing...
As for the merger, as long as they continue to make good games, I'm fine with it.
