| #1 Posted on 21.7.03 0906.13 | I noticed this mentioned ina few previous threads, but if you haven't heard, Ronaldinho will be a Barcelona player. This makes him the second player to turn down a move to Manchester United this season, after Harry Kewell.
Man U are not going to jump into any panic buys, but the rumours are growing of Real and Manyoo battling for Patrick Viera. Arsenal are skint due to commitments to a new stadium and cannot afford his demands for a new contract. In order to stop a Bosman deal, they would have to sell him either before the end of August or in the New Year transfer window.

Apparently Chelsea already tried with a bid totalling £100m to get Henry and Vieira and it was dismissed out of hand. I'm pretty sure after that Viera signed a contract extension. In any case the chairman of Arsenal was saying over the weekend that rumours about their financial plight have been exagerated, but then I guess he would say that.
Over here we're being told that Man U might go for Damien Duff with (unsurprisingly) Chelsea also in the running. At £17m he seems more than a smidge overrated but time will tell I guess.

Question, why do you deduce that the two said players turning down United are down to Sir Alex?
Kewell turned down United to join the side he supported as a boy, he also turned down Arsenal, they never made a formal offer but once they established he wanted to play for Liverpool there was never any point.
The case with Ronnie is simple, attempting to attract a player of South American origins to England is very difficult due to the massive change in lifestyle. His heart was never in move to Old Trafford, I suspect its not in Barca either but it was his only real option.

Well you might not be able to sayit was Fergie's fault in these cases, but he's not exactly universally loved is he?

Well me for a start. But then its unlikely that Man U have any plans to sign me in the near future, even though I'm available on a Bosman
Generally speaking there is considered to be a feeling that Ferguson isnt the most loved of managers in many quarters. On occassions he's made comments that some professionals went beyond mere sports psychology and insulted the integrity of fellow professionals (comments made during the title race with Newcastle being one example). His constant arrogance and refusal to ever criticise his own players even when they're clearly in the wrong also doesn't win many friends.
Quite how prevalent this feeling is on the continent I know not and I suppose you could equally argue that many players would sooner have Fergie for than against them, but the guy's certainly pissed a few folks off in his career.

| #8 Posted on 22.7.03 1059.54 | I suspect the "general feeling" is something the media TRY to reflect. Sure he's not the most popular guy with fans. He is after all the manager of a very successful Manchester United side and he rarely if ever criticize his own players even when wrong in public (how many managers actually do?).
He's heavily involved with the LMA (League Managers Association) and is spoken highly of by most if not all managers. He is a man that is known to be fiercely protective of his players.
With the exception of Jaap Stam how many players have left Old Trafford condemning Sir Alex? Not many if at all. Contrast that with the heat Glenn Hoddle receives.
This so called resentment is spin by the media, an element of the game Ferguson does not embrace but rather uses as a tool to suit this purpose and that of Manchester United.
Terry Venables who has achieved next to shit in the game is lauded as one of the great modern thinkers, but what has he actually achieved?
Success breeds a level of arrogance but a greater sense of resentment.
