Press release from HDNET

HDNET FIGHTS ANNOUNCES LONG TERM PARTNERSHIP WITH RING OF HONOR WRESTLING

New partnership brings unique brand of professional wrestling to HDNet.

DALLAS (January 26, 2009) HDNet Fights today announced a long term partnership with Ring of Honor Wrestling.

Coming soon, HDNet will debut a new weekly television series, which will bring Ring of Honor Wrestling to a national television audience for the very first time. Ring of Honor Wrestling and its stars are prominently featured in the recent, critically acclaimed movie The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke.

Ring of Honor is an exciting addition to our programming lineup at HDNet, said Mark Cuban, chairman and co-founder of HDNet. ROH has developed a cult following thanks to its special brand of professional wrestling and we are pleased to present it for the first time to a mass television audience.

Ring of Honor is proud and excited to enter a partnership with HDNet, said Cary Silkin, president of Ring of Honor. Our in-ring action is the perfect compliment to HDNet's respected programming and growing stature in the broadcast industry. It's a match most definitely made for a Main Event."

Founded in 2002, Ring of Honor has become one of the most successful and recognized promotions in the world thanks to its focus on authentic professional wrestling. Over the last seven years it has produced some of the biggest stars in the industry, including Samoa Joe and CM Punk, while featuring the best in-ring competition in the world.

The stars of Ring of Honor include ROH World Champion Nigel McGuiness, the 3-time reigning Wrestling Observer Newsletter Most Outstanding Wrestler Bryan Danielson, Necro Butcher, Austin Aries, Tyler Black, Jerry Lynn, and Mark and Jay Briscoe.

Air dates and times will be announced at a later date.

Interesting. I don't see this changing the industry by any means, but I can't see ROH getting exposed to more people as a bad thing for them. I am just curious what the mechanism for getting the content on will be. Old ECW tv style where they just show matches from their shows? TV tapings? Matches taped at the shows for tv but not dvd?

This could change a TON. For starters, if ROH starts raking more cash from being televised, ROH starts paying it's workers more. Imagine a world where M.C. Punk and Samoa Joe stayed in ROH; 2008 would be very different business wise for both the WWE and TNA. However, the emphasis should remain on 'could'.

If a cable channel doesn't brag about how many homes it's in, in every single press release, it means it's not in very many homes. That number also isn't listed on their website, and that's the number that really matters.

The upshot is ROH ought to soon be releasing shows in BluRay, since everything for this needs to be shot in 1080i.

Comcast MPLS JUST moved HDNet off its own pay tier into the existing HD tier, so at least I'M gonna get it!

(And on the MMA side, I already have seen more Bas Rutten in the past two weeks than I have in ...well, since I last forced myself to watch IFL, I think.)

http://www.hdnetfights.com/story.php?id=438 says it's either 10 million or 66 million homes, according to a poorly worded sentence.

Launched by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and General Manager Philip Garvin in 2001 HDNet broadcasts programming from movies to original programming to a current estimated 10 million subscribers nationwide out of the sixty-six million households for which HDNet is available according to Megan Magana, media relations at HDNet.

I assume that it means that of the 66 million households who could subscribe to the digital/HD tier that HDNet is available on, 10 million of those households currently do.

I had HDNEt on Charter as one of my 10 HD channels, and I don't have it on DirecTV.

In the short time I had it, I got sick of watching people kiss Bas' ass. Good lord people, have some dignity.

For some reason it offended me more than watching Fox's NFL team love each other.

One cannot give Bas Rutten too much love. It is impossible.

Bas Rutten is like every Chuck Norris fact come to life.

Yeah, it's just Bas and that weenie, but those nuggets o' wisdom that Bas will occasionally spout out are solid gold. A few examples.

- Why don't you rest in a restroom? (This was followed by Bas cackling.)

- When asked what to do with criminals; You just get a scarecrow, set it on fire, and yell into a boombox to the criminals that 'this is you!'

That and the cavalcade of unrecognizable fighters they have on there is good for a little fun.

Godspeed, men of the 2nd Bn, 127th Infantry, 32d "Red Arrow" Brigade, Wisconsin Army National Guard! Victory in Iraq!

DirecTV sez that starting with their pretty basic "Choice" pkg and on up, you get both HDNet and HDNet Movies when you add HD access (which is an extra $10/month.)

Maybe it's because I have the HD package, but on DirecTV, I have it on ch 306, and 306.1

Oh, I guess I have it then.

Shows you how much TV I watch.

I thought it was part of the HD Addon package that I'm not getting, becuase I already have 100 other channels in HD.

Quite a few RoH fans I've run into actually were hoping that RoH wouldn't get a TV deal, because they were afraid that having to format a match to work around a TV show would ruin the wrestling going on during the matches...

So, I don't know if it's good, or bad.

So, I don't know if it's good, or bad.

Well, one good thing about HDNet is they don't do the normal commercial setup. They seem to run show for about 50 or so minutes straight, then run lots of ads and promos until the next show 10 minutes later. So ROH should have no trouble with having to structure in commercial breaks and things like that.

I should hope it was at least safer than the first one... The ladder match with them on Raw was an absolutely disgusting display of the WWE's disregard for their health. I pray that they got the chance to work with equipent that wasn't faulty this time.....
