Comedic genius is often related to mental illness.

Was never a fan of anything he was in that was supposed to be funny, but in a dramatic role, he was riveting. Good Will Hunting is brilliant because of him.

RIP

EDIT: Didn't he just go to rehab a month or so ago?

EDIT2: Hollywood Reporter is saying it was death by asphyxiation. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/robin-williams-dies-suspected-suicide-724724
Is that hanging? Car in the garage?

I won't speculate, I am sure we will know way too many details within a few hours, but here's what I will say.

Two people I know well, one a good friend one my wife's very good friend killed themselves, I guess both by asphyxiation. (my friend hung himself, my wife's friend sat in the car)

Both were diagnosed with depression and both hated their pills. My friend swore to me he was ok 12 hours before he did it. I beat myself up because I didn't go stay with him, or call anyone I could think of to do so. He was crying for help but I didn't see it.

Williams had a crapload of crap lately, fell of the wagon a bit, got his show canceled for seemingly no reason, he wasn't getting a ton of roles (He has a Christmas movie out this year) and all that helps your depression talk to you.

If you have friends with this - get them to get help!

An absolute shocker. There are so many movies that he's done that I love.

CRAZY ONES was probably the best show I'd seen in years.

RIP, Mork.

There are days where I miss the Dreamcast.

I'm pretty bummed by this. I was a huge fan of his while I was growing up. 'An Evening With Robin Williams' was one of the first stand-up shows I watched (way before I was 'supposed' to be able to watch it), and from then on I always tried to watch everything he did.

It's kind of hard to wrap my head around the idea that he will not be making films, TV shows, and stand-up specials. Just terrible news.

So sad and unexpected! RIP Mr. Williams.

I hope you, Carlin, Kaufmann, and Dangerfield are putting on one heck of a show up there tonight. :')

Wow. So very sad. This hit me hard when I read the news as the first movie my parents ever took me to was Popeye. I became obsessed with it and would walk around everywhere with a can of spinach. I also watched Mork and Mindy religiously when I was a kid. His dramatic roles even won me over as someone who isn't into dramas. I really feel for his family during this tragic time.

Why is this relevant? Do you know something about Robin Williams that is not mentioned in the news articles I've seen, nor on his Wikipedia page?

You don't have to have a mental illness to commit suicide.

...but it helps!

But seriously, every major media story I saw included the quote from his publicist(?) saying that he'd been "battling severe depression."

As great a comedian as Williams was, I think he was actually an even more gifted dramatic actor. Good Will Hunting, Insomnia, Fisher King, World According To Garp, Awakenings...if Williams had never picked up a standup mic, he still would've had a legendary career.

RIP

I actually only enjoyed two of his comedy roles. Mork, because I was 8 years old, and Aladin.

But you're right, in a drama he was a force. Good Will Hunting sucks if anybody else is in that role.

FTFY. Robin tried to make that movie watchable and Damon would not let him do it.

Godspeed, Robin. I am sorry the voices got too loud to ignore, and I hope the next world is less mad than this one.

His parody of Mister Rogers on Mork and Mindy was beyond classic. His ad libbed stand up in his primes was an unbelievable rush. He was a gifted actor.

And regarding his demons - they were well documented and he admitted to them and his drug use.

RIP

This is just terrible ... as a kid growing up in the 80's, I not only remember Mork, but also his portrayal of Popeye on the big screen ... I friggin' loved that movie as a kid.

RIP good sir ... I hope you find peace on the other side.

The rest of my sentence was "if anybody else is in that role" he made the movie.

I know that I am one of the few people who loved it, but Moscow on the Hudson was one of my favorite early roles of his after Mork & Mindy.

Unlike other people (Vince Vaughn and Michael Cera, I'm looking at you guys), all of his different roles were different from each other. I never one described a part of his as "Robin Williams as himself, again!" like I do with those two.

I never saw any of the Night at the Museum movies, but I am going to go out of my way to see them now. You never realize what you have until it is gone and the fact that he will never be able to entertain us ever again really bums me out. The fact that it was by is own actions makes it even worse.

EDIT: OMG, I forgot about Popeye. I was obsessed with that movie when I was a kid. I wore out our Beta tape of it (off of TV, I think) because I watched it so much.

Hey, so, I just finished watching it. I'm sad I don't get to see these people being hilarious in the company of each other, but it also kind of felt that the story they wanted to tell was told and it'd be a different show even with the same case.
