Rob Van Dam defends his Intercontinental Title on Raw against Chris Benoit.RVD is currently in midst of his 2nd reign as I-C champion. A win by Benoit could do two things. 1)Set up a feud with RVD ging into Summerslam. 2)Allow RVD to "step up" and participate in main event angles. I think the feudwould work better. It could help Beoit by making his return mean something. A feud with Bubba Dudly wont help his title aspirations. One question... Does Benoit need a 4th reign as Intecontinntal title? He has been wrestling for the title since 2000. If his time hasnt come yet I don't know whose has. Well a 4th Triple H I-C title reign didnt hurt. Any comments on this match, its outcome,or its aftermeth.

promises to be a great match, or great series of matches. Both are great workers, and Benoit needs some time to get back to where he was before his injury put him on the shelf for so long. My guess is Benoit will stay at the IC level for awhile, however, or the Tag Team level, RVD on the other hand is entering his make it or not period. Does he have what it takes to be a main eventer and compete for (and hold) the WWE title. I think so, based on who I pay to see, and RVD is on the short list. Be well

I think this could be a possible clash of styles. But, then again Benoit and Regal have had some good matches and I can't name one person Regal DOESN'T clash with. As for who should win, I guess it depends on whether or not they're planning on jumping either of these guys to Smackdown soon. The way I see it Smackdown needs another big face (since Rock's champ he doesn't really matter and he leaves eventually no matter the scenario). They could jump Benoit and find a way to make him face or go the obvious route and have RVD go. Either way, Smackdown's gotta' get another big face. I could be wrong, but it seems like the good guy to bad guy ratio on Smackdown is way out of whack. Although, I could be wrong again, because I don't consider Cena as one of their main guys when they're pushing him as such.

What about a best of 7 series between Benoit and Booker/Eddie/Regal with Benoit winning, facing RVD at Summerslam, cheating to win, and a RVD/Benoit feud till Survivor Series or Royal Rumble.

the prospect of a best of 7 series with Regal and Benoit doesn't exactly excite me. I rememeber their match on RAW last year wasn't exactly what I'd call good.

Benoit vs RVD should be like Eddie vs RVD. RVD brings the high spots, Eddie/Benoit brings the ground work/psychology, and we all ooh and ahh. Should be a great match.

Benoit v RVD certainly has potential. Benoit always brings out out the best in people and RVD seems to be at his best when he's in there with a good worker (I always enjoyed his matches with Angle). I hope we get more than one match out of it. I do think it's time to put this whole "Best of 7" thing to rest though. Yes it was a great series and we all enjoyed it but any attempt to recreate it would just be a disappointment.

I agree that it shouldn't be "best of 7" but I would love to see this rivalry continue beyond summerslam. It could bring Benoit more heat with the casual fan and be a series of big matches with 15 minutes at summerslam and a cage or ladder or similar match to close things at the following ppv. Benoit is not accepted as a world title contender by casual fans. He was close a year ago and this series could help bring him back up. Another IC run maybe the thing for him, although I'd love to see he and Eddy with tag belts if they float or drift to Raw. RVD could lose the run with Benoit and slide to a serious run against the world champ

I applaud the "away with the best of 7" guys. That series is long past over and we'll probably never see it again. Get the tapes and watch it again, other than that, we gotta' be realists here. The best I hope for is a good match, possibly setting up an even better feud. I'll take a "best of 2" if I can get it.

Why does Smackdown need another face, and why does your choice for that face have to be the 2nd reason I love RAW (the first having been Brock Lesnar)?

With as much as RVD is over, a feud with Benoit would help elevate Benoit to the high-end of the midcard, and would help him regain the momentum he lost over the past year. While not being a RVD fan, I like the idea, and I think Benoit could possibly carry him better than Lynn did.

I don't care who wins, since I like them both. I'll pick RVD with a rematch at Summerslam, with Benoit winning. Then if Lesnar wins the undisputed title match at Summerslam, we could have a RVD-Lesnar match at Unforgiven.

I, personally, am looking forward to RVD/Benoit a great deal. I hope that Benoit captures the title at Summerslam and then they find a way to extend the feud all the way until the Survivor Series, where RVD can regain it. Mind you, I'm not saying the they should feud *actively* between now and the end of November, just that they should leave the issue somewhat unresolved and keep teasing a rematch so we can have a huge angle for the IC title. Having the heel hold the title and the face chasing (for a long time) seems to be the most consistently interesting title angle that they can do. Especially now that they've united the title with the European Championship, a nice long feud is needed to bring some importance and prestige to the championship.

Feuding will help them both: Benoit to get back on track after his neck injury knocked him out of a possible WWF/E World title run, and RVD, to prove that he can work a world championship-calibur match, and can possibly be the top man in the company.

i say benoit takes it on monday. rvd doesn't need the belt to be over with the fans.

benoit's certainly paid his wwe dues but DAMN if booker t. doesn't NEED that title right now.

(you realize benoit and booker are the only former wcw champions left and if they get a wwe title run, they'll be the last people to have held both belts "the old school way" of getting themselves over in a new promotion?)

Sounds like a great match up.
But add Booker T in the mix and you have one helluva IC match for Summerslam!?

Assuming that wont happen RVD can use this little match and maybe a following feud to regain some steam after his losses to Brock (which didnt hurt his popularity though) and Benoit can use them to regain some steam after his injury. Bubba was a nice warm up but this is the real deal.

AND..you know by now the theory of all upper midcard/main event level guys having some heat with one another? Even faces look funny at each other and go 'we will never be friends but for now.....'
Well..Benoit and RVD haven't met one another yet and need to get that distrust of each other for their future battles.
Err...my point is, even if this is just one match or a short feud till Summerslam, this will be something that comes back later.. 'hey undisputed champ RVD..remember how I made you tap?' 'hey undisputed champ Benoit..i believe my frog splash proved you wrong on july 29th so how about a match between us tonight?!'

All this talk of RVD and Benoit taking it to the main event level made me think...who are the main eventers these days?

Angle, Triple H, Jericho, Undertaker, and now Brock Lesnar.

Rock is about to leave, and Hogan seems to be out of the main event for a while (or maybe for good, please, please, God), so I don't count them.

Edge looks to be on his way up. Add RVD and Benoit, and people, we have a fresh, young main event tier.

Edit: Forgot Booker, who looks to be on the upward road too.

Take out Jericho. He's got a big time losing streak going for him. Last PPVs loss to Cena was a nail in the coffin.

Add back Hogan for name value, and Wretlemania headlining.
Once, he's not tagging he's a main eventer.

I think having RVD and Benoit in the main event scene is key to revitalizing the WWE. Benoit is the best wrestler they have, barring Angle, and he can make virtually anyone look good. He's not a great man on the mic, but he is one of the few who can get heat without talking that much. He was pretty damn over before his injury, and he never spenty much time on the mic. He's not that over now, but that's because he isn't being pushed. What the hell did he do to deserve being stuck on the tag circuit wrestling idiots like Bubba Dudley? RVD on the other hand, is very over. His matches tend to be devoid of any storytelling or psychology, but he does great highspots, and Benoit could carry the story until RVD got a bit better at it. IMHO, RVD should have had a main-event push months ago, but what the hell, better late than never. Booker T is also super-over, and it's insane that he isn't wrestling people like Angle and UT. People love him, he's great on the mic and can do some cool shit in-ring, too. He deserves main-event status more than RVD or Benoit, IMHO. He's the most charismatic man in the WWE after Rocky, who's about to leave.

Elevating these guys would free up the IC belt for the new young talent to compete for and make names for themselves.
