Associated Press is reporting that Richard Pryor died today:

LOS ANGELES (AP)- Comedian Richard Pryor has died at his home, his ex-wife said Saturday. He was 65.

It's early (and it's a Saturday), so there's no full story links yet, but those are coming. He'd long been suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Funny as hell, he was. I think I may still have one of his old comedy records.

Here we go: Associated Press blurb on Yahoo (news.yahoo.com)

Few comedians are as funny as their fans say they are. If you've only ever heard people talk about him, Pryor was every bit as good as you've heard. Probably better.

A great loss for comedy and comedians everywhere.

A fun, sexy time.

At least he isn't suffering anymore. We can be thankful for that.

In my estimation, Pryor was the most groundbreaking comedian of the 20th century, and funny as hell.

He will be remembered. And missed.

He was a popular attraction until he choked to death on a corn kernel.

The first comedy record I ever heard was from LIVE ON THE SUNSET STRIP.

Talk about blowing the bell curve for future comedians in my eyes.

RIP Mr Pryor, thanks for the laughs.

Without Richard Pryor, we wouldn't have had guys like Eddie Murphy & Dave Chappelle ...

Pryor was so.. I can't even think of a word. He went from stand-up to becomign quite possibly one the most brilliant social commentators on race relations in the 20th century. He si just as much an influence on spoken word as comedy and he really was a brilliant storyteller.

He will be missed.

People tend to overstate the greatness or importance of individuals after they pass away when memorializing them. Rest assured, nothing that will be said in this thread could possibly approach hyperbole. There is no exaggerating the legend that was Richard Pryor.

I had to quote this in my LJ, because I couldn't have said it better myself.

I was first introduced to Pryor through my father, once he thought I was "old enough" to hear it. Just incredible. A sad, but merciful, end for him. Rest in peace...if God exists, tell him what's what.

    RIP

No offense to those comedians, but in his prime, Pryor was so far ahead of them as to be laughable. And his short-lived tv show was absolutely brilliant. I was lucky enough to have witnessed his work as it happened and even while we were laughing our asses of, he scared those of us in white America with his eerie insight into race in the US.
