They just announced this on ESPN. Red Auerbach died today at the age of 89.

Thanks for 16 titles in 30 years Red. If there is a no smoking policy on the other side, I'm sure that Red will treat it as he treated the no smoking policy on Earth. In other words, he'll ignore it in the same manner that he did speed limits. They always did say the Celtics would have a dance team over Red's dead body. Since the team doesn't debut until this coming week, they were right.

NBA.com has a very nice video tribute of Red. Worth a look, IMHO.

Red was one of the true icons of professional sports, and the heart and soul of one of the NBA's oldest franchises. The game of basketball will be forever diminished by his passing.

Reggie Miller made a good point on the DP show on EPN today. He thought that ALL teams ought to wear a black shamrock on their uniforms out of respect for Red.
