Macho Man Randy Savage -- one of the most famous wrestlers of all-time -- died today in a car accident in Tampa, Florida ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 10 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

    Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh."

    Story developing ...

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

A great talent with a helluva run.

TNA would do well to bring back Jay Lethal for a tribute match.

This is really sad. He's one of my all-time favourites. Loved him as a kid, and watching old tapes now, it's amazing just how good he really was.

One of the best. All time. Did just about everything in the business, and did it better than 95% of his peers.

Plus, I'll always remember dragging my Dad to WWF events when I was 7 years old, and seeing how much he enjoyed Macho and Elizabeth.

One of the '80s guys who really transcended the biz into Pop Culture, thanks to the ubiquitous Slim Jim ads and his unmistakable voice...maybe one of the most recognizable voices in wrestling history. *Everyone* knows who the Macho Man is...just sad, sad news.

I always loved his appearance as BONESAW MCGRAW in Spider-Man too.

He did an appearance at my local mall when the rap album came out, but you had to buy the CD (at full price at The Wall) so my friend and I just sorta lurked but didn't get to meet him...

Vince *has* to put him in the Hall of Fame next year, right?

If I'm grading people by the Bret Hart "30 Point Scale", Macho is _THE_ best of all time.

This is horrible.

Godspeed, Macho.

Truly a bummer. Really enjoyed watching him perform in the ring, talk outside of it and just be Macho. He was already missed since it had been so long since I had seen him do any of those things and knowing it will never happen again, only makes that missing feeling worse.

Ooooooh yeah!!

Awful, awful news. One of the all time greats has passed, and without getting what he truely deserved, a Hall of Fame spot before he died. I've just done what I should have done a long time ago - ordered the three-disc DVD set.

I fell in love with wrestling while watching Savage vs Flair at Wrestlemania 8. An absolute classic which still holds up today.

This sucks so bad. I hate to read of any wrestler deaths, but this is truly like being kicked in the stomach, on the level with Eddie and Owen.

One of the big three (Hogan, Flair, Macho), in my head, from when I was seriously into the wrestling (Back when we called it that). And as far as working goes, my favorite worker ever.

Macho, Pomp and Circumstance is being played in heaven, brother.

Condolences to his wife and family.

IMO, Savage-Steamboat Wrestlemania 3 is the greatest match I have ever seen. From workrate, to storytelling, to announcing. The pace they kept up was breathtaking. Just incredible. He even coaxed a good match from Warrior. The multiple Elbow Drops told the desperation.

I never met the man, so I can't speak for his personality. But as a performer, as has been said, he was already missed. Just a shame that so many bridges were burned.
