Perhaps best known these days as director of Tommy, Altered States and The Devils.

Often viewed as a controversial director due to liberal amount of sex and nudity in his pictures, especially those related to works of DH Lawrence.

My favorite film of his is my often-recommended for Hallowe'en picture Gothic, about the creation of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

The first time I saw Gothic, it was half of a double feature with Lair of The White Worm. Both movies were insane and I still love both of them.

The thing I've been wondering about the ending was, was the crazy lady right? She demanded the blood of the youngest child in the store before she was shot, saying that would end the plague-like mist. So then after his dad shoots the kid, what happens?...
