Saw CRZ' post about Dominick Dunne and it occurred to me that no one had posted anything about another luminary who we lost today--songwriter Ellie Greenwich. You may not know her name, but you certainly know some of the songs she co-wrote (usually with her then-husband Jeff Barry, and sometimes with Phil Spector as well), including such gems as "Be My Baby", "Leader Of The Pack", "Hanky Panky", "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "Baby I Love You", "River Deep Mountain High", "I Can Hear Music", and "Da Do Ron Ron". My personal favorite was the glorious "Then He Kissed Me". Not a bad life's work at all.
My dad had a 45 (which is probably now in my basement) - Baker Street on one side, Right Down the Line on the other. Both of these tunes were played endlessly on our phonograph when I discovered music, and both evoke such strong memories for me.
