Clarence Clemons — the Big Man with the big horn — died today of complications from a stroke he suffered last weekend, said a source close to Bruce Springsteen. He was 69 years old.

If you know me, you know this is hitting me like the death of a favourite uncle. The version of If I Should Fall Behind where Clarence plays and sings was our wedding song, and I've been a devoted E Street disciple since the early 80s.

When the stroke happened earlier in the week, I had a bad feeling about it. I knew at the very least that we would never see him live again. But when I heard the news tonight, it hurt pretty badly.

Am I the only one who always got him confused with Clarence Carter? Odd too, as I am a pretty big Springsteen fan.

RIP

Within the last few weeks, our Boston classic rock station has started playing REM in semi-regular rotation. I was talking to a friend about how I don't like hearing "The One I Love" on the same station as Bad Company and Foghat.
