Well, look on the bright side, Dolphins fans. At least your team will choke early, as opposed to having a cock-tease “almost good enough to make the playoffs but not quite” season.

I feel your pain, my friend. I'm a die-hard Dolphins fan, but it's like this franchise has been cursed this off-season.

I think if this off-season has had any kind of theme, it would be "OK, NOW what?".

Although David Boston can now take solace that he and he alone has the title of "loopiest guy on the team" now that Ricky's pulled a Barry Sanders.

5-11, and that's being optimistic as a fan. On the bright side, whether it's Wanny's fault or not that Williams left, he will now go bye-bye after the season.

and now Edgerrin James has said that he would like to play for the Fish (miami.com)

Colts fans just have to love that news - nothing like helping locker room chemistry just before camp opens

In all liklihood, though...Edge just gets to come in as the savior next season after the Dolphins have a down-cycle year.

If this wasn't a case where him and his purple Rolls-Royce weren't a mainstay in Miami in the off-season, I'd say it was him making a contract ploy with the Colts.

I realize this is a small possibility of succeeding, but it's worth noting that Minor is in a contract year this year as well. And he's up to about 220 pounds without having lost a lot of speed.

Of course, it is possible I'm looking for any beacon of hope that exists right now for this season.

While I feel for the Dolphin fans, I think that Williams made a good choice.

Assuming that he has enough money to never have to work again, he is retiring while he is reasonably healthy. There is nothing more depressing than watching old football players dealing with their injuries - I vividly remember reading about Jim Otto struggling to put on a pair of pants because of his knees. Ricky escaped with his health and a wad of cash, now he's young, rich, and retired. I hope he enjoys his life.

As shocking as this is, after thinking about it, I'm glad it happened. I would rather have no Ricky than an unmotivated Ricky suspended multiple games because he likes to smoke pot and no one is going to tell him otherwise...

GURU: I'm wondering if this isn't just a stall tactic at some level. One could speculate that he knows he's going to come up positive for drugs, so he's "retiring" now to get a bit longer for the stuff to leave his system.

No. His only regret is failing the first drug test because he forgot to take his "pass the piss test medicine"

Maybe someone told him they were going to go to hair testing?

So THAT'S why he shaved his head! ;-)

Of course, this is all speculation based on the unfounded assumption that he is using drugs. I'm probably way off base here, and this is just my wild dark horse guess - I in no way know anything about Ricky Williams' personal habits and wouldn't want to imply that I do.

Oh, it's common knowledge, and straight from the horses mouth, in this case. Williams has never been shy about his love for Mary Jane and that was pretty much the deciding factor in his decision to stay high and travel the world. According to just about all reports before, during and after the fact, he was not happy at all with the drug counseling classes and / or the impending mandatory testing/multiple offender situation, based on the outcome of his current appeal. Long story short - he has his vices and the NFL / conformity in general be damned.

I see it this way - it's not like the guy has led Miami to the promised land, or even the playoffs for that matter. Was he a great running back? I rate him above average, but not in the upper echelon due to being injury prone and unpredictably flaking out. Case in point - only last month he was considered a locker room standout for his motivational speech re: the upcoming season and how everyone should come together as a team, etc. Now - POOF, he's in Japan somewhere smoking a bowl.

The Jeff Hardy analogy is good, but I compare him more to Rodman. Damn straight the talent is there, when *he* is there, if you get my drift. As far as Miami's season, they have a fairly easy "on paper" schedule, including the Bills and NE at home in December. I say .500 or maybe a game below - it could be better depending on who they bring in*...it's hard to say how this will play out. One thing I do know is the decision to shell out dough for Feeeeeeely looks worse everyday.

* and maybe this will FORCE the coaches to have some semblance of a game plan and long term goal. The Bucs / Ravens route has proved successful - if the defense plays up to potential and the offense can put up at least 20 points a game, who knows?

If they want to go for it this year I see them maybe trading Ogunleye, possibly to try and get A-Train from Chicago. He's not been impressive the last couple years but he's a powerful back and they might feel that he would be re-born in their system. I suppose the Vik's might be willing to let one of their backs go as well for the right offer but I don't see Bennett or Williams as being in the Ricky mould.

The other option would be to accept that not much is happening this year and throw in Feely as starter to get him a bit of experience. He's got Chambers, Boston and McMichael to aim for so he wouldn't be totally without support. They could maybe pick up Candidate as support for Minor too.

Alas I don't see AJ leading anyone to the playoffs this year, and given that thats what Wannstedt probably needs to save his job, a trade is probably more likely than not.

Sure, drugs are bad, mmmkay, but $650 000 for smoking some weed? No wonder he up and left.

He would have been suspended (without pay) for four games for a second violation of the league's substance abuse policy. The $650,000 is what those four game checks would have been.

As far as trade rumors go...I wonder what the Chiefs' first round selection from last year, Larry Johnson, would fetch defensively from the Fish.

You know what. I am as big a Dolphin fan as there is and probably half expected that he would quit at some point in time. I have no problem with him calling it quits, fine with me, go your own way.

The biggest issue to me is the timing of it all. Why wait until there is less than a week until camp starts?? This only guarantees that the Dolphins have limited options in replacing you...

A team that bent over backwards to make you the man and to support you in that and you repay them by leaving them in the lurch. Thanks Rickey...

CNN talks about James Stewart, Ricky Watters, Stacey Mack as possible FA pickups.

They talk about Lamont Jordan, Anthony Thomas, Onterrio Smith, Lamar Gordon, and Larry Johnson as possible trades...

I think I would play it out through camp and see how Travis Minor handles it. Then may be bring one of those guys in as needed...

Ricky Watters is interested in playing again??? He hasn't played for like two years, right? Or was last season his first year off? The other two free agents aren't bad, but, they won't be able to come close to replacing Williams. Stewart would probably come closest because he can do more things than Mack.

No way the Jets deal Jordan. He's going to be Martin's replacement as soon as next year. Those other guys are all possibilities. Thomas doesn't fit in well with what Lovie Smith is going to do in Chicago, the Vikings have insane depth at the position - any of their three is a possibility. As a Chiefs fan I would love to be able to get a cornerback or something defensively for last years first round pick, and probably a future pick as well.

    Two words: Ewing Theory.

Too bad that this had to happen after Eddie George was signed, however, or else Eddie could've gotten a lot of cash from the suddenly desperate Dolphins.

Five words: Dave Wannestadt, Dolphins Head Coach.

There are a lot of Dolphin fan in Ontario that I know of. I think it has something to do with offsetting Bills fans. Buffalo being a very close border city, we get total media coverage of the Bills. Some will gravitate to that and become Bills fans. But many will be turned off by the annoying Buffalo media so they'd probably support the Bills arch-rivals which over the years has always been The Dolphins... Of course that's just a theory but I do think there's something to it.
