how about the trade that got ricky to the saints? that wasn't exactly brilliant either.
what really makes a difference in determining who gets the better end of the deal is how well the draft picks perform. the reason the herschel trade was so lopsided is because of how well the cowboys used their picks.

Where did you guys hear this?As of 11pm EST CNNSI and ESPN.com are saying a deal is still being worked out but nothing is final. I guess the Saints have alot of faith in Deuce McCallister if they are willing to trade Williams. I dont understand it myself. I think Williams is due for a breakout year next year, and thanks to the incompetence of Ricky Williams first agents (Master P's No Limit sports) he works for peanuts. I guess they want the draft Picks. But I believe that as long as you draft well in the lower rounds you can still be a contender.
I knew Williams had dumped Master P's crew as his agent, and Id heard that when Haslet took over as coach one his first acts was renogiating Williams contract. But then today I saw on ESPN that Williams only made $400,000 last year. So I think the length of the deal was changed and not the numbers of it. Thats why hes so attractive to the Dolphins.

Saints get Fins 1st and 4th round this yaer and 3rd round min. conditional pick next year.
Deuce MCAllister a 2nd year RB from Ole Miss that as the understudy to Williams last year will pick up the load at RB. The playing time he got last year was no that bad.

but, out of all those draft pics, LaVar Arrington is the only skin on the roster...and he's a f'ing beast
Williams ain't all that, and after his crappy 1st season w/ the fins, everyone will see it...

I think this is a great deal for the Dolpins. I think that Ricky, if healthy, will develop into the leagues best back. Especially if Edgerrin James cant come back fully from that injury.
For the Saints, Ricky Williams has to be the biggest bust in NFL history. They gave up a whole draft for him, he only plays a couple of seasons for you, and then when you get rid of him, he only nets you two draft picks?
I think the Saints should have held out for more than that. If nothing else, they could have held him during the season, waited for a team to lose their top running back, and then come sweeping in with a trade proposal.
I know Ricky has been injury prone, but he does well when healthy. He has to be worth more than two draft picks, doesn't he?
true, the saints did give up a lot to get him, but he was one of the top rbs in the league and rushed for 1,000 yards the last 2 years. after only 3 seasons, i don't consider him a bust because he actually got better each year.
holding out for a rb injury later in the year would not work. the nfl trading deadline is pretty early on in the season and trades rarely happen during the season. there are always veteran rbs willing to play for the league minimum who are decent fill-ins (anyone remember that lamar smith and ricky watters are still available?)
considering there were only 2 teams involved in the ricky williams sweepstakes, i don't think either one of them were going to start piling up draft picks to acquire his services. it seems that the days of surrending tons of draft picks in return for a player are over...now teams do it for coaches instead.

I forgot to mention that if Rick goes 1,300 yards or more with the Fins that 3rd rounder becomes a 2nd round pick next year for the Saints
You can't tell me that you would rather have McAllister running for you than Williams.
Not only has he rushed for 1000 yds the last two years, but he has caught 44 and 60 balls out the backfield too.
He certainly can't be called a bust. The Saints gave him up. When Aaron Brooks is getting smashed around this year, because they have little running game, it will serve the organization right.
As for the Dolphins, this is the start of the puzzle. As a big DolFan, I agree they need to add some OL help to make it all worthwhile, but it is definitely an improvement over what they had. And they did not give up much...

Hello Ladies...
----------
In 2000, the NFL leader in fumbles was Jon Kitna with 17. Ricky Williams was tied for 17th with 8.
In 2001, the NFL leader in fumbles was Kerry Collins with 22. (!) Ricky Williams was tied for 19th with 6.
Now granted, Ricky Williams was tied for the league lead in fumbles by a running back both years, but let's take a look at who he was tied with and their comparative number of carries:
2000: Ricky Williams (NO): 8 fumbles/248 carries Emmitt Smith (DAL): 8 fumbles/294 carries Jamal Anderson (ATL): 8 fumbles/282 carries Ahman Green (GB): 8 fumbles/263 carries Jamal Lewis (BAL): 8 fumbles/309 carries Tiki Barber (NYG): 8 fumbles/213 carries Kevin Faulk (NE): 8 fumbles/164 carries (!)
2001: Ricky Williams (NO): 6 fumbles/313 carries Eddie George (TEN): 6 fumbles/315 carries LaDanian Tomlinson (SD): 6 fumbles/339 carries
So by this it looks like Ricky's reputation as a fumbler isn't *that* deserved. I don't think of Emmitt or Eddie George as fumblers, nor do I really think anyone else he was tied with either year, save Ahman Green, has that much of a rep as a fumbler. The carries are about the same for everyone except Faulk in 2000, and it's got to be somewhat reasonable to assume that if Ricky hadn't gotten injured in 2000 his carries would've been up there with Jamal Lewis'. Also, note that his carries-to-fumbles ratio went way down in 2001 (1.9) from 2000 (3.2).
