I read today that Rey is now out of his WCW contract and taking bookings. The first one will be here in Houston:
"Rey Mysterio Jr will make his long-awaited return to American rings on Saturday, February 9 in Houston, Texas. The event, promoted by the Elite Wrestling Federation, will be held at the Sam Houston Race Park."

I thought that the fed was going to pick him up? Wasn't JR all giddy about getting him? I guess the Cruiserweight Division won't be getting the push like we thought.

Well, I think that gimmick's been taken now (and improved upon) by Spike Dudley.

I agree that spike takes better bumps, but overall IMO Rey Rey is the best under 5'10'' this side of the Pacific. Besides I think its a fed rule you have to have a token luchador. (Jeff Hardy doesnt count)

They haven't picked up Rey yet, because there's really no room for him on the roster.

From what I read though, the WWF is very interested in signing him, and will do so after the roster split they've been planning.

When the split finally does happen, they'll have more room for talent, and Rey will be a part of that. Until then though, he's on his own.

No matter how bad things may get, just imagine what would happen if Vince Russo was booking again, and you will feel better.

Well, Spike Dudley is an insane little guy.

Now, that you mention it - I wouldn't mind a series of Spike vs. Rey matches.

WWF is probably going to pick up Rey Misterio Jr. soon after that show. You know, to see if he still has "the skills" to be known as the bringer of "the goods."

Just an FYI. Rey did some shows for EMLL in December (with the Juventud Guerrera and the former Psicosis), including their 12/14 PPV and he looks VERY GOOD.

As a lucha fan, I'd rather see Rey in Mexico. But I understand if he goes where the money is.

When Nash threw him into the trailer? A lot of it runs together now, but I don't think he was off TV much then. He played a pretty big part (considering he was a cruiser) in the early nWo angle. He was one of the last WCW guys left in one of the early-nWo World War 3 matches and he and the Horsemen jumped Sting during one of the big ring-clearing nWo brawls, which lead to Rey Jr. climbing up to the Nitro Commentary booth the following week to apologize to Sting. I seem to remember, between that and his feud with Malenko, he was busy back then. But again, I could be running different times together.

If Rey does show up in the WWF, I'd be interested if he brought back the mask. It made his whole character, to me and I never cared much about him after he lost it.

If Rey showed up, he wouldn't wear a mask for two reasons:

1) The WWF doesn't think masked wrestlers are marketable.
2) Once you lose your mask in lucha, it's gone. It's frowned upon, to say the least, to put it on again.

1. Mini-Kane has $$$$ written all over it!!

2. Seriously though, do losses of mask on US soil count? Psicosis was straight back with the mask in Mexico after he lost (I think Rey too for a short while, wasn't there a story in some Mexican National Enquirer equivalent with "Rey Jr without the mask exclusive" despite the fact that it had been on a WCW PPV without it?). Besides, if the WWF wanted him in the mask, I'm sure they'd pay for it and it'd happen. It's not like the WWF is above shitting on tradition.

Whoops, forgot about Kane. Any others?

Let's see, Psicosis lost his mask to Kidman in a Mask vs. Hair match on Nitro. I know he then went to Mexico to lose it again to Rey Mysterio Senior. Rey and Juvie lost their masks on U.S. soil but I dunno if they dropped them in matches in Mexico. There is a Psicosis in AAA right now with a mask, but that's not the one we all know and love. Antonio Pena owns the rights to the gimmick, so when the original Psicosis left they stuck someone else in the gimmick. The Psicosis we knew is now wrestling as Nicho en Milanrio, without a mask and short hair.

When the WWF set up Super Astros a few years ago they had Rey Buccanero drop his mask because they thought it would make him more marketable. Then they dropped the deal and Rey was screwed. They also wanted Hijo del Santo to drop his mask, which is just beyond crazy.

Super Astros was cool. I remember the WWF came to Houston for a RAW and had a Super Astros taping before the show. We had no idea what people were saying, who they were, or anything. But they crowd got into it. I remember seeing the show on TV and thinking it was good TV, higher production values than most lucha shows. I also kept wondering could lucha action get over if the WWF really made a commitment to it on RAW. Then the WWF dropped it because they didn't know what to do with it. That was a pretty poor thought process. Why drop a good show? Maybe ratings weren't there, but I read that they were good.

Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me?
