Mysterio's match was awesome last night. Guerrero did a good job last night as well. I also liked Cole and Tazz talking about lucha, I bet JR and Lawler wouldn't have done it.

See, in Mexico, they occasionally give a shit about concepts like "history" and "continuity" and "tradition."

Rey will be egged in the streets the next time he shows his face there, and he'd better hope that he has a nice, long WWE career. Pissing on decades of lucha tradition is a career decision.

Does he look better with the mask? Sure. But he should've thought of that before he agreed to lose it in WCW. What's done is done.

They "pissed all over lucha tradition" in WCW by forcing the guy to get rid of the mask because, despite all those Mike Tenay video packages, they completely failed to understand what the mask meant to the character and even what his character was all about. It was a terrible idea to make Misterio and Psicosis - two guys who were instantly recognizable with their masks, masks that went a long way toward establishing their respective characters - drop the masks in the first place.

So screw that, they killed the tradition in WCW with the pointless unmaskings. Misterio needs the mask. If the guy who looked like Konnan's kid brother climbed up the cage and did the dive to lead the turnaround against Storm's guys, it wouldn't have been nearly as effective. With the mask, Misterio is the King of Mystery, the ultimate representation of the underdog face who triumphs over all the odds, and people can pick up on that and it can make those kinds of segments that much more effective. I'm very happy to see him back the way he should be.

As for the pants, I liked his old style better, but these might turn out OK, especially if they're covering up some unweildy-looking braces or leg supports he needs to wear. Just slap some question marks on them. The mask, I thought, looked a little odd. Like it was made of vinyl or, as I've read somewhere else, pleather. Looked a little big, too. I don't remember it always being that way.

And the contacts? I attribute that to my theory that the real Misterio has been in hell the past three years, battling for the souls of all humankind while some imposter took his name back here. And now he's back with freaky eyes, because that kind of thing always happens when you go to hell. If freaky eyes are the biggest problem you have after being in hell, consider yourself lucky, I say.

Anyway, Misterio being back rules.

And don't forget Juventud.

WCW having Rey lose the mask as if it wasn't a big deal was a terrible idea. WWE having Rey wear it _as if LOSING it wasn't a big deal_ is just as terrible an idea, and just as large a failure to understand what the mask represented.

A different mask, a different gimmick, and nobody would complain AND he'd have his cherished aura of mystery.

I really liked Rey Mysterio on Smackdown! His match was good I liked all his moves especially the fake dive into the kick in the face, that was great. The dive off the cage was fantastic I was surprised he actually jumped instead of just falling.

Hey, chill, it's only been one week...Give them time, they just might do a confidential on him and the mask...Or Tazz may explain it on the next SD!.

A different mask? Why? Just so we can honor a pro-wrestling tradition (that's just funny when you think aboot it) that is only wildly popular in Mexico?

Rey loves his mask. The design, the look, the aura. Don't believe me, look at the tattoo on his shoulder...

Wouldn't it be funny if he had a different mask on and we see his old mask tattooed on his shoulder?

I thought Rey's match last night was awesome. I was celebrating the return of Rey Rey when my other favorite "Ray" was getting traded off my favorite team, the White Sox. But that's a whole different story. Maybe Mysterio can kick Kenny Williams' ass for me. Oh, and I like the look of his contacts.

The WWF/E has never shown any evidence that it gives a good goddamn about tradition of any sort, be it Japanese, Mexican, or even Greco-Roman. The fed will always do what it thinks is best for its audience and its TV ratings. Personally, I don't think they should be blamed for this. The fed is in the entertainment business and is not charged with being the repository of wrestling history that some would have it be. When it suits their purposes VMK and his minions will distort history, defy logic, and sell out. In my opinion this is one of the things we both love and hate about the WWE, but also one of the things whch makes it so addictive.

Rey Misterio IS Scorpion!

Lawsuits and royalties aside, they could actually pull that gimmick off- they showed him whipping off one mask, to show another beneath it in one of the video packages- maybe he could wear some sort of gruesome skull-mask below his "normal" one, and whip the first one off before he finishes the match.

Now, if we could just teach him to breathe fire...

Oy. 'scuse me, I have to go play some Mortal Kombat now.

The TV feed on UPN crapped out for me, so I didn't get to see Rey's return.

Just curious, did he have his old WCW music (pre-Konnan rap) or did he get a newer theme?

Why the hell would the WWF care about a tradition that only affects probably 5% of their fanbase?

Plus you seem to be forgetting the Rey Jr actually returned to Mexico for a Mask vs Mask match AFTER he lost the mask in WCW, and was booed like crazy. Saying the WWF is pissing on tradition by making him wear the mask is ridiculour, the Mexicans pissed on their own (and rather stupid) tradition themselves.

They booed him BECAUSE he had already lost his mask in Oakland and knew the match was a sham.

That would be like telling your significant other you were a virgin, but had actually gone to TJ and lost it and then came back.

You can only lose your mask once.

Can anybody point me to a place where I can find a video feed of Rey's debut? I watched it last night but I want to see it again. Specifically, I want to see his jumping enterance again, if anyone can find a clip of that

For your information, that match never took place. The match was scheduled so that Rey could lose the mask "for real" in Mexico, until the Mexican wrestling commission stepped in to inform the promoter that (a) he would be suspended, (b) some gimmicks that he'd been feuding with a rival promotion over would be awarded to the other promotion, and (c) Psicosis would be stripped of HIS mask for participating in the match against Rey. The stipulations were quickly changed, and even then Rey got hissed at on the way to the ring for allowing WCW to take his mask for no good reason.

Demanding that the tradition be observed properly isn't what I'd call "pissing on it" -- more like DEFENDING it.

Rey putting the mask back on as if nothing had happened shits on every mask vs. mask and mask vs. hair match in the history of lucha libre. Whether the WWE cares or not, REY should care.

Rey is not a Mexican luchador anymore. He is a WWE wrestler now. Therefore, he may choose not to adhere to Mexican traditions, and that is his choice. Being a Mexican luchador is not a lifelong cult, you may choose to no longer be a luchador, if you want. Rey, obviously, has made that decision. He is paying for that decision in Mexico, but that is to be expected. I think people who are upset by his remasking need to realize that he is not a mexican luchador anymore, he is a WWE cruiserweight. Therefore, he is not pissing on the luchador tradition. *Rey lost his mask on American soil, as an American wrestler.*

By the way, the American tradition seems to be "anything goes," so it's fair to say that he is honoring the American tradition. What's wrong with that? Why is it more important that he honor the Mexican tradition than honor the American tradition?

I didn't think much of Rey, aside from the main event run-in. Gassed-up, bad-knees Rey doesn't even beat Spot Fu Rey from WCW, let alone Willing to Bump Rey from last year's CMLL or Young and Awesome Rey from 95 & 96 pre-WCW. I think I'll stick with my Rey vs. Juvi tapes rather than acting as though "he's back". He ain't, and I'll be shocked if he maintains positive momentum for more than 2 months.

Jubuki, those days are over. Benoit won't do the swan dive. Mysterio for the time being won't face Eddy. Mysterio has to beef up because unlike WCW who generally leaves luchadores alone, the WWE has punks such as Test (When will his year be up??)
