As we know, in 1999 Rey Mysterio Jr. lost his mask in a mask vs. hair match tag-teaming with Konnan against The Outsiders. Rey took the mask off, started a rather impressive push, and kept the mask off for the remainder of WCW's existence.

However, upon his entrance into WWE, he came back with the mask. I've heard people say things like, “Rey can never come back to Mexico now that he's put his mask back on.”

Now, I listened to Mike Tenay enough to understand that lucha masks are very important, but I'm still slightly confused. What exactly would happen to Rey if he did go back to wrestling in Mexico? Any Lucha marks that can answer that for me?

He'd get heckled, spat upon, and generally despised in every worst way a public figure could be. He was already martyred upon his return after the fall of WCW, and that was when he HADN'T put the mask back on. Although the tradition technically states that a different equals a new gimmick, and also technically speaking this mask is different from his last one. It's larger with mandibles and is made from different material. Plus he's got the funky contacts lenses and baggy pants now. I like the idea of preserving tradition, but in this case rey Rey is SO much cooler with the mask on.

Okay, shoulda clarified that. he'd have been spat on, heckled and generally despised by the wrestling fans of the country. Or so I gather.

I'd guess that he wouldn't wrestle with the mask down there.

The Commission on Boxing and Wrestling down there is super-strict about these sorts of things, according to everything I've read. I doubt they'd clear him to wrestle in the first place, basically. For reasons of preserving the whole myth/tradition, for safety purposes, for spite, etc.

As for what specifically would happen if he did, the best gauge would be if Black Tiger dropped his mask, being revealed as someone who's wrestled prominently without a mask. Supposedly most people don't know it's really Silver King under there, and certain elements would not take it well. A BT unmasking would also blend the hatred of wrecking tradition with a good healthy batch of xenophobia, too.

I wouldn't put assault/murder out of the question at all.

Chris-Thinks Rey seems a little loose in his execution, but possibly it's because remasking pisses me off.

As I said before, it's acceptable for a person to create a new gimmick and new hood (eventually) after losing his hood.

On one level, people may be upset with Silver King wrestling as Black Tiger, mainly since he's supposed to be Japanese, not a luchador.

Of course, from what I understand, everyone pretty much knows it's Silver King. Not as obvious as Giant Machine mind you.

You're all so WONDERFUL. Why did they ever have to remove you from the continuity? You'd have made for MARVELOUS stories. You WILL make marvelous stories. And the FIRST story of the new world will be a story of REVENGE! -- The Psycho Pirate, Animal Man 23, May 1990.

They usually only do a new gimmick remasking if they're really inconsequential guys; a lot of people seem to do it early in their career. Silver King is pretty well-known, though, so it may pose an issue. One of those things we probably wouldn't really know until it happened, I guess.

As long as he continues to wrestle like a cruiserweight instead of mini-Konnan, bringing the mask back is a brilliant idea. And, since Angle says Rey is a twelve year old, does that mean Rey was having 4 star matches with Dean Malenko when he was only 6?

So he wasn't under a mask before putting one on?... My question is, in Mexico had a mask, lost it, then put another one on... if a wrestler changes gimmicks without losing a mask match... or starts with no mask and puts it on... no problems there...

I think the fake AAA Super Nova(non-Super Crazy)(Super Crazy's original gimmick long ago) wrestled under another gimmick beforehand..

Well not really... This week's edition of Raw did a 3.7 cable rating, with a six share, according to Nielsen Media Research. That is up from last week's 3.6. The show did hours of 3.4 and 4.0. The highest rated segment was the overrun, which did a 4.5.
