On this week's WWE BackDoor, the This Week In Sports Entertainment block lists the following info:

10/04/1981: Sgt. Slaughter defeats Rick Steamboat to win the WCW Championship. The match was the final of a tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The title had been stripped from an injured Wahoo McDaniel.

WCW? When did the WWE start editing references to the NWA? Is this to spite TNA?

What's even better is that the match was for the NWA US Title....

*pause to look*

After further review, they mean the U.S. Title.

EDIT: Grim may have beaten me to the punch but I brought the linkage, though. :)

Sigh... the lineages will become so muddled that it's only a matter of time until Lou Thesz will be immortalized as a former Hardcore Champion.

I believe they actually had a gimmick unification match, and L.A. Park (the original) won the rights to La Parka. (At least it makes more sense than Booker T losing the rights to his last initial...)
