So... Guru posted HERE about getting an e-mail on a $30 USB TV Tuner.
I decided as a Father's Day gift to go ahead and order it.
+For one, it works. I'm going to go get a coax splitter and some longer coax, but for all purposes, it does the job.
+It comes with a remote control and a copy of WinDVR3, and it does the job.
+I've recorded about 2 minutes of Countdown with Keith Olbermann as a test, and even on the "Good" settings (about 380px wide), it's pretty damn good. I used the default, so I could futz around to what I need.
-If you do decide to get the tuner, skip the instructions where it tells you to use the install program for the drivers. I'd use the Install Hardware wizard, since your drivers are on the disc. Following the instructions on the CD led to a blue screen of death.
-So it's supposed to come with the capability of getting an EPG, but it's not letting me. No big, but it would have been nice. However, if I can use TitanTV's PVR icons, then it's a moot point, since I know there's homebrew EPGs out there (MythTV... but I'm running XP so that's moot once again).
-Waiting about three weeks to ship. While Surplus' salesperson was nice, it was mildly disappointing to see that it looked like it was in stock online and then turned out to be back-ordered. Minor issue.
GimpShop is closer to what you want. Gimp 3 beta is looking more like a regular program. I use Gimp at work because I'm too cheap to requisition yet another copy of Photoshop. 90% of the time I can do what I want to with it.
