Ok, I'm pretty sure it's for real this time.

Sources -- Los Angeles, New Orleans Hornets agree on Chris Paul trade

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a deal in principle with the league-owned New Orleans Hornets to acquire guard Chris Paul, according to sources close to the process.

The Clippers, sources said, will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul.

The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks, according to sources.

I can't believe the Clippers would be dumb enough to ship Gordon away when they'll only have Paul for two years at the most.

Wait...yes I can.

So with the Clippers' perennial unlucky streak, I give it about 20 games before Paul blows out his bad knee. I really hope I'm not right about this.

EDIT:

Here's your Clippers starting five as of now:

G - Chris Paul
G - Chauncey Billups
F - Caron Butler
F - Blake Griffin
C - DeAndre Jordan

Notable bench players: Eric Bledsoe, Mo Williams, Ryan Gomes, Randy Foye

Assuming injuries don't take over, this is a playoff team right here!

Oh, and lost in all this is that the Clips haven't used their amnesty yet. If they amnesty Mo Williams next year and open up that cap room, they might be able to pull in free agent Dwight Howard! Yikes!

Three scenarios:

1) Paul's knee gets destroyed in typical Clippers fashion.

2) Paul spends two years in Clippers land, moves on. An expensive rental.

3) The one we all hope to see. Where "typical Clippers fashion" is torn asunder, and makes way for a new era; the Blakers.

Paul's health stays good for, we'll say, five years. That's five years (or more) of the best pure PG in the league playing with Dunkbot 3000, in what is definitely the most complimentary and exciting duos in the league today.

I'm a Pacers fan, of course, but I'd love to see the Clippers do really, really well. (For that matter, I was tickled pink last year when the Mavericks, who won all of 13 games the first year I was an NBA fan, won the title).

I was ready to reply to say that this didn't make any sense. Then I looked at the Clippers roster and saw they basically don't have ANY shooting guards anymore.

CP3 is obviously the starting PG and the main ball-handler on this team, so the starting off guard has to be one of: Billups, Mo Williams, Eric Bledsoe, Randy Foye (there are other guards but they're not going to start, maybe ever). Although he's clearly the next best guard, I think it makes more sense to have Billups as your 6th man. I know that just pushes all those other PGs further and further down your depth chart, but a 6'3 Billups isn't going to do much for you matching up against the Kobe Bryants of the world.

Do they have the cap space to acquire anybody else?

The line of thinking is that Derrick Rose (EDIT: not Paul, as I originally said) and Billups played together on the '10 World Championship team with Rose at the 1 and Billups at the 2. Clippers are hoping lightning strikes twice, because Billups played the position pretty well.

I'd see about acquiring a serviceable shooting guard through a trade of some kind. At 6'3", and 35 years old, Billups isn't exactly going to tower over opposing shooting guards, nor out-jump them.

But if he comes into the situation with a positive attitude (which I'm not certain he will, 'cuz he mentioned recently he's tired of being used as trade bait and being shipped all over the country), I think the Clippers can work it out.

Of course, it is the Clippers; part of me is still amazed (and needless to say, relieved) that Blake Griffin didn't suffer a career-ending, life-threatening injury when he jumped over that car.

Clips have thought this through, too. If Billups no-shows or (and this is the important part) if he's disruptive in any way, he'll be in breach of contract and he'll forfeit the remaining $14M on his contract. It's a heavy price to pay and if anyone will call a guy on breaching his contract just to save a buck, it'll be Donald Sterling.

Niiice. Who would have thought the Clippers would have a solid plan for what to do in the (quite likely; it's still the Clippers) event of a worst-case scenario?
