Despite the presence of Bill Walton, I still encourage everyone to find a way to sneak out of whatever Christmas stuff may have been planned for them tonight and watch the Kings and the Lakers! (

Hell, go ahead and watch the REAL first ABC game - Celtics and Nets I don't care so much about but - BUT! MUSBURGER

(Also, there's an early EARLY game on ESPN [Pistons/Magic] if you're downright NBA-obsessed - I am not)

Not to mention the pregame before Celtics/Nets co-hosted by Tom Tolbert.

Kings/Lakers should rule. Who knows maybe Mateen Cleaves will play for a couple of minutes.

Let's not forget that the 5:30 start is for those on the West Coast.

From the infamous Wrestleline SS interview:

DTD: If you were to make changes in WCW, if you were in charge and not Ric Flair, what would they be?

SS: I'd get rid of all the old guys, and push the talent that has waited to get the push. The things they are doing, it's back in the 1980s. It's just bad, man. Flair doesn't even deserve to be on the show. You've got to get rid of all the old guys. Like what Vince did, they started pushing guys. Nobody knew who The Rock was 2 years ago. He made The Rock. Now The Rock just did Saturday Night Live. You've got to start with the young talent, talent people can relate to. Who are we trying to relate to if we've got a 50 year old man out there? Are we trying to relate, so a 50 year people and above will go out and buy a f*cking little toy? That ain't gonna happen. It's a f*cking joke.

Does it remind you of any show in particular?

I thought the new pregame show was alright.

Too much Walton, though.

I miss the old NBA on NBC theme.

I hear there's a brouhaha going on because the league is going to make the Lakers wear white at home (apparently starting tonight).

It is pretty odd seeing them in the white, thought I was watching the Pacers at first. Anybody know the reason why they made the change? Are all home teams required to wear white or something?

Obviously, those new uniforms didn't help.

You know the Lakers are bad when the Clippers are ahead of them in the standings.

I just wanted Walton to go down to the court and blow Shaq and Webber right there. Every other word out of his mouth was "throw it to Shaq," "why isn't Webber touching the ball in this situation," and "Bobby Jackson is the second coming of Christ."

By the way, I love the Lakers and all, but Walton is the biggest Laker apologist in the world. Even when the Kings came back and took the lead in the third quarter, he was still ripping on Sacramento.

By the way part two: The Kings may have won this round, and even with the bad record, us Lakers (we Lakers?) will still see you in the playoffs. Bank on it.

The call is from heroism, will you accept the charges?

with like 54 games left for the lakers...it's still too far away to call, but 11.5 games is a big margin to overcome...

they are half a game ahead of the warriors, and 2 games behind the clippers. that doesn't bode well for the lakers...

if the season ended today, they would be the 11th seed 11-19 (.367), 5 games behind #8 minnesota at 15-13 (.536)

Unfortunately though, the margin they have to overcome is only 5 games in 54, which isn't that difficult. For historical reference, the Celtics came from 5 down with 8 to play in '92 to win the Atlantic Division from the Knicks. And, if I'm Dallas or Sacramento, the last reward I'd want is to have the #1 or 2 seed, and find out I'm playing LA in a 5 game series. One screw-up, and homecourt could be long gone.

Yeah, I'm not saying that the Lakers will win the division or anything, but they always find a way into the playoffs. And remember, they weren't the number 1 seed in the Western Conference last year either. They seem to step up in the playoffs, and while times are tough for the Laker fans (of which I am one), a game or 50 later and we could be representing the West again in the NBA Finals.

Regarding the Lakers wearing white:

They aren't being punished. The Lakers simply wore their home alternative jerseys. They wore white for the first time in three decades against the Kings, and they'll wear white during every Sunday home game for the rest of the year.

You guys talk of the Lakers making the playoffs as if it is an impressive accomplishment. Everyone makes the NBA playoffs, so who cares if the can overcome a 5 game deficit in 54 games to make a ridiculously overcrowded postseason that takes almost as long as the regular season to play? Being the eight seed should be an embarrasment, not a thing to be proud of.

Hey, I think a lot of teams (Denver, Memphis, Toronto, Chicago, etc.) would kill for the "embarrassment" of the 8th playoff spot.

I'm sure they would. That doesn't make being one of the top 16 teams in a league over an 82 game season any more impressive.

That is completely different from football, where teams have only 16 games to seperate themselves from the pack and one or two mistakes can cost you one of the twelve playoff spots. In the NBA (and NHL) you can cost yourself several games with stupidm istakes and still expect to make the playoffs. Despite the luxury of being able to lose and not be penalized, half the teams in the league are still not good enough to make the playoffs.

On the plus side, Buc, those half of the teams who aren't good enough to make the playoffs tend to lose in the first round. If they advance, then they've earned their place, I figure.

And since the sixteen-team format was adopted, only two eighth-seeded teams have defeated a first-seed (Denver in 1994 over Seattle, and New York in the strike-shortened 1999 season against Miami).

Let's not take these teams lightly, though... the Rockets finished 47-35 in the 1994-95 season before repeating as NBA Champions, utilizing some of the most remarkable playoff comebacks in history. That Rockets postseason is perhaps the most incredible thing I've ever seen in the world of sports. Or it's close.
