Well looks like I found the repalcements for my 2 year old system that has trouble reading discs sometimes..woohoo!
I knew they were doing this as I work for BB and it was impossible to get PS2's as they were draining the market so replace the old versions with the new version.

TOKYO - Sony Corp. on Tuesday showed a smaller book-size PlayStation 2 going on sale worldwide next month that will help the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant cut costs as video-game consoles continue to drop in price.

The downsized PlayStation 2, which weighs half of the current model at about 900 grams (32 ounces), will cost US$149 in the United States and 149 euros in Europe, the same price as the current model.

The smaller PlayStation 2 is about a fourth the weight and size of the regular PlayStation 2 but has all of its functions such as playing CDs and DVDs. It comes with a built-in Ethernet port for online gaming. The U.S. model will also have an analog modem port for homes still without broadband.

The machine, which is 3 centimeters (1 inch) thick, down from 8 centimeters (3 inches), will hit stores Nov. 1 in North America and Europe, and Nov. 3 in Japan. It uses fewer parts than today's PlayStation 2, cutting manufacturing costs

Since LanceJr didn't offer us a link, here it is:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/549/549938p1.html

From what I've seen and read, I'll stick to my oldschool PS2 -- for the simple reason that it won't support the HDD. I'm wondering if Sony is throwing in the towel for that medium.

Way back when, I didn't buy the new SNES when it was released; I never bought the new PSone, and I probably won't buy the "PStwo" when time comes.

The SOK has seen the following cinematic masterpieces so far this year:

Eurotrip; Scooby Doo 2; Shrek 2; The Ladykillers; Spider-Man 2; Anchorman; 13 Going On 30; Day After Tomorrow; Harry Potter 3.

Best: 13 Going On 30; Worst: Day After Tomorrow

OFFICIAL SONY PRESS RELEASE

It's quieter, and some of the current PS2 of the past few years of use skip, or "click". I'm saying this is coming now with great games still coming out and still more then a year off from PS3 seems like a good buy for those with issues with their current systems.

Kind of ironic, I just sold my old PS2 for XBox games.

So I might pick this up when the urge to play GTA: SA gets too bad.

Well, San Andreas is also being released for the Xbox; so...

Umm...unless you are programming it yourself there will be no GTA:SA for X-Box. Rockstar was even quoted somewhere as saying there are no plans to bring GTA:SA to any other system. Of course we all know they said the same for Vice City. Wasn't it over a year or more before Vice City was released on X-Box? And by that time now X-Box next would be announced so I wouldn't get my hopes up to much, its obviously going to be a great game so open the damn wallet get a re-designed PS2 and get a great game now and play it now rather then playing the game through your friends telling you about it.

Just so you know - Smaller PS2 means you cannot add on the harddrive.

And I would bet that San Andreas comes to both PC and Xbox in a year's time. Until then, I have friends who own PS2's.

Eh... I've already got a PS2, so unless it goes bad before PS3 comes out (and presumably PS3's gonna be backwards-compatible, right?) there's really no reason for me to go out and buy a PSTwo.

Actually, my first PlayStation was the PSOne, which I just recently gave to my Uncle Cliff. Unfortunately, heh heh, I did it while in the process of moving, and didn't think about giving it to him until after I'd packed away the RF Switch in a box somewhere. So he has the PSOne system, a college basketball game, a controller and the AC Adapter, but no RF Switch.

Of course I told him about it when I gave it to him, and when I finally get settled in I'm gonna have to go box-digging. But the only game system he's ever owned prior to this has been a Colecovision, so he's pleased as punch. And that makes me happy, too, so I've got no problem digging through boxes for him.

A-hem. Anyhoo. Anyone here actually play Final Fantasy XI? And isn't that the only game you need the HDD for? So what's the big deal?

On the other hand, I wouldn't put it past Sony to create an AychDeeDee to go along with the PSTwo, heehee.

Heh, funny thing, Sony has developed the next generation disc that they hope will REPLACE DVD's in the future. Yes DVD are still phasing out CD's and VHS and now Sony hopes you will all move to a new format that doesn't work in current DVD players. And rumor is the next gen Playstation will use this format and NOT be backward compatible. But it's early still so don't take that as gospel.

Though I noticed Sony did pick up a movie company recently, which leads me to believe they'll use it's archive of movies to try and push the new format out there.

As to the HDD, I use it to copy my games onto it so they load faster and I don't need the disc anymore.

I was under the impression that the new format that Sony will be pushing, and putting in the PS3, is Blu-Ray DVD. If that is the new format of which you speak then all they are are DVDs with less compression because they can hold a ton more. I don't remeber the exact numbers, but it's soemthing insane like 27 gigs per side. And the players *are* backwards compatible. So all your DVDs won't be obsolete, but all those TV show season sets will look outdated and bulky once whole boxed sets start coming out on a single disc. No more "two disc special editions" when movies come out, either.

Of course, this is Sony who is pushing it, and look how they did when they tried shoving Beta tapes down everyone's throats over VHS.

You are correct, it is the Blu-Ray, but you're wrong in terms of compatibility. Course so am I.

"Sony said it had decided to incorporate a Blu-ray drive into the PS3 in order to allow users to view high-definition video content. Today, Blu-ray is incompatible with current DVD technology, and it remains to be seen whether Sony builds in a second drive for backward compatibility - not only for video, but PS2 games - or plans to use a dual-laser unit capable of handling both kinds of optical media."

In other words, yes it may be backward compatible, but that'll drive up the price so who knows if they'll want to do it.

I too was amazed to see Blaster Master on there. I haven't bought anything from the VC since Double Dragon, but I might have to spring for this one.
