I didn't want to start a new thread with this, since it's not official yet, but 1510 the zone is reporting that the Red Sox have made another trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The report is the Red Sox have acquired Jeff Suppan for Freddy Sanchez. The Red Sox will also get Brandon Lyon back from the Pirates, thus ending that controversy.

Again nothing is official yet, so nothing to link to.

Sounds like a good deal for the Sox to me.

Have heard this report on WEEI, so if both have it with the same players, it appears likely.
From watching Sanchez in his plate appearances at the end of last season and during his time up this season, he looks like he has .260 hitter written all over him. Plus, he's 25, so its not like he's a 21 year old phenom like Reyes for the Mets.
Lyon coming back to Boston means you stash him on the DL until the end of August, thus giving the Red Sox an extra player to play around with for a playoff roster. Still only 24, they can either put him at the end of the rotation next year, or spin him off during the off-season.
As for Suppan, welcome back Jeff and hopefully your not bringing Al Nipper along as your personal pitching coach as happened in '95. He's on a role now, and anything is better than rolling Mendoza out for a beating every 5th day. Plus, Suppan has shown a tendency to pitch deep in games this season, which Boston has been lacking.
In conclusion, this means the Red Sox received Suppan, Sauerbeck, and Gonzalez from Pittsburgh for Freddy Sanchez and Aramis Ramirez. Seems like a steal to me.

Lest the Red Sox get a moment's advantage, the Yankees have traded Brandon Claussen and cash for Aaron Boone according to ESPN

Here is a link to ESPN where Gammons is reporting the same deal. He also reports that the Yankees have acquired Aaron Boone, which definitely helps them.

From the article:

The Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates also got together for a second trade this month, Gammons reports. Boston acquired right-hander Jeff Suppan, reliever Brandon Lyon and pitching prospect Anastacio Martinez from Pittsburgh for pitching prospects Freddy Sanchez and Mike Gonzalez. Lyon was traded by Boston to Pittsburgh in a two-for-two pitching swap on July 22

It seems they swapped back the prospects from the original deal with Pittsburgh as well.

Edit: SPF2119 beat me to it with the Aaron Boone deal while I was typing.

Is it just me or have the Pirates completely jumped the shark in terms of trying to help their team?

Can anyone explain how the Cardinals and Mariners do nothing to improve themselves leading up to the deadline? Both teams have large fan bases, and yet neither does anything to improve their post season chances. How can the Cardinals not grab a pitcher when Jeff Fassero is in the rotation? And how can the Mariners do nothing as they battle Boston, New York and Oakland in the 4 teams for 3 spots race (Even if the White Sox go flying past teams, it doesn't matter because the Royals would have to get hot at the same time as well).

Mariners: Pride. They probably don't want to admit they made a mistake signing Jeff Cirillo.

Cardinals: Maybe they think signing Kevin Appier will be the answer?

Lest the Red Sox get a moment's advantage, the Yankees have attempted to give us years of advantage. Their supposed blue chip pitching prospect for a mediocre rental at 3B? Knock yourself out, Georgie. Next, they'll trade Nick Johnson for Rickey Henderson at the waiver deadline.

Mediocre rental at 3B? Now that one I'm not so sure about. Aaron Boone isn't going to be the All-World Infielder everyone's saying he'll be with the Yanks. He's 30, and is putting up decent (not WHOMP-ASS, mind you) numbers. Pretty much all that can be said about him... the Red Sox still made out better today, though.

Let's see...

Giants--so much for the confidence in Moss and Ainsworth.

Yanks--$$$$ Well, Boone's got to be better than Ventura and Zeile, and it looks like Henson is no longer the prodigy...

Lalaland--how many phenoms have they gone through now that Beltre's going to crap?

Sox--Suppan should be a nice fit.

Mariners--go Willie I guess. BTW Bob, we miss you in AZ.

Cards--I guess they were happy with stephenson's CG the other day...that or they have an irrational love of Drew.

Well, at least the Bucs still have Giles and Kendall.

All right, I'm enjoying Rhyno's "man-beast" gimmick: He keeps his hair long, wears full-body wrestling tights with a big "R" on the back and uses the "Rhino Gore" as his finishing move. Can't you imagine him watching the Discovery Channel one day while tossing around possible gimmicks and having one of those "Hey, wait a second!" epiphanies during a rhino segment?

To spruce things up, the WWF should give Undertaker and Kane last names -- like Undertaker and Kane O'Brien, the O'Brien Brothers -- just for comedy's sake. Hopefully the door's still open.

RVD is approaching the always-exciting "The crowd loves him, but he's not getting a major push yet" phase which helps makes wrestling so much fun. It only happens once every few years -- Stone Cold in '96, The Rock in '98, Shawn Michaels in '93 and so on. -- ESPN's Bill Simmons back in 2001

Well Big Bad, yes they have Giles, which is always good, but he will probably be gone either in the later half of August, or in November. And Kendall, well he's not very good, so he's not that much to have in the first place, and we're using Giles as bait so that we can dump his 10 million dollar a year contract on to the next set of chumps who think he'll actually hit .330 with 20 homers and 95 RBI.

Sighhhh, to be a Pirates fan.

Hey Pirates, don't trade Giles.
