|  #1 Posted on 15.9.02 1250.55 | Okay, as you can see from my sig I'm pretty psyched for the release of Red Dragon in a few weeks. HOWEVER, there's been some mega negative rumblings, especially as it concerns Brett Ratner as director The film's got a stellar cast (Hopkins, Norton, Keitel, Seymour Hoffman, Watson, Feinnes-ALL IN ONE FILM), it's got Silence screenwriter Ted Tally, AND Silence's production designer Kristy Zea. Personally I am stoked for it, especially considering the only alternative we have is the ultra-80s Manhunter. Anybody else got an opinion?

| #4 Posted on 15.9.02 1404.59 | Hannibal is underrated. It obviously is nowhere near the level of SOTL, but it's a solid three-star film. The aura of campy baroque just OOZING from it is palpable. Although, agreed, Julianne Moore just WASN'T Clarice.

I love Red Dragon the book and one of the thing that I dislike about Manhunter is its deviation from the book, especially regarding the William Blake stuff. I'm happy to see that it apparently has been restored.
I hold out hope, but I wish they could have used more of the Manhunter cast (Peterson, Farina) or mixed it with the SOL cast (Scott Glenn).

Manhunter didn't have that scene and I hated the movie as a result (although admittedly, it was a decent movie). Seriously, the book was one of the best I've read, and the best in the series by far (at least in my opinion). However, I recently heard from friends who somehow acquired a copy of part of the movie (don't ask), and they say that Hannibal Lecter's role is much larger than it is in the book. As much as I like Anthony Hopkins, this may ruin it.
Marty doesn't need surgery. This is a great day. I almost feel like I can say, I don't care that the Steelers lost. Again.

Yes, Hannibal was ultimate suckage, but the book was ultimate suckage, too. Red Dragon was an incredible book and I would recommend it to anyone.
The decision to cast Ralph Fiennes as Francis Dolarhyde is genius, in my opinion. Plus, I like anything involving Edward Norton. He's my other Gary Oldman. :-)

Red Dragon birthed Silence, and Silence got raped and had Hannibal. It's a damned ugly metaphor, but when they change the main character's actress and don't mention anything about it...and change the story around to suit themselves, it's stupid.
Just look at [Red Dragon Director Brett] Ratner's interviews: He wants it to be an almost direct interpretation of the book. Which means it'll rule. I'm reading Red Dragon now... *shudders* Damn it's good.

| #11 Posted on 21.9.02 1433.29 | It's too bad that they already used the *actual* Gary Oldman for a Silence movie. I would have preferred to see him as the lead in this movie.
Doesn't anyone think that Norton might be the wrong choice for the role? That was the first thing I thought when I heard the cast. He's just too young. I believe the character is supposed to be late-30s/early-40s in the book. And Norton will probably look 32/33 until the day he dies. An older actor from the Nicholas Cage, Tom Hanks, Jeff Daniels, Kevin Spacey range would seem to fit better. I always got the feeling that the character had a "I've seen too much of this/I'm too old for this" mentality.
I'm just worried that between a too-young Norton, and a too-old Hopkins ~they're going to digitally de-age him? Oy~ I'll be too distracted from the story itself. | cranlsn

I've got tickets to an advance screening next Tuesday and if all goes well, I'll let you know what I thought...without any spoilers.
