What Worked

TKG: I have watched enough Helmsley to know that the payoff for calling a Black guy an uppity Sambo who doesn't deserve to hold the belt is the black guy looses, gets buried and then gets stuck with the Darkie Druid gimmick. That usually wouldn't make a "what worked" column. But its the 50 year anniversary of Brown v. Board, the Supreme Court decision that said that Blacks are entitled to be educated but we still won't pay them as much. The Orton mic work was a nice tribute to a historical moment.

PAS: Beniot + Edge v. Orton + Batista was pretty fun, especially the finish, although Orton really isn't as good as Flair. Orton conceptual body motion submissions really stink. The ref bump was really great, it looked like the ref broke his jaw. Beniot is also really crazy to take the Headbutt on the belt on a meaningless tag match.

TKG: This kind of started mediocre but got good. Batista continues to be really fun to watch. Benoit whose a guy who I've watched play face in peril in tags for a long time, is really good working on the apron. Edge isn't as good a FIP as Benoit. Benoit is a much better hot tag than Mongo. The ref bump was just narsty.

PAS: Regal's acting is really great, although he really is Rip Torn trying to save Freddy Got Fingered.

TKG: Rocky with a Cham Pain shoutout.

What Didn't Work

TKG: This whole show was paced really like it was booked by Russo as every single segment but the tag match was set up with same formula; long segment going nowhere killing time interrupted by surprise. Endless shitty Lita/Trish match...Kane surprise, meaningless Randy Orton promo ...surprise its Benjamin, meaningless Kane/Venis...surprise its Matt Hardy, endless Hardy beat down...surprise its Lita, endless Coach segment...surprise its the Rock, poorly paced battle royale...surprise its HBK. All the surprises make the others mean less, make the fans pay less attention to what's happening as they wait for the run in. I was kind of surprised that the tag didn't end with Orton saying " this script is bullshit"

PAS: Lita v. Trish wouldn't cut the mustard as an opening round match in the IWAMS women's tourney. The Vaseline all over Kane's head really made me wonder what the question he was asking Lita. I know she was a Avail groupy and fucked El Dandy but I don't think she can fit Kane's entire head in there. I don't care how much grease you have.

TKG: His ENTIRE head? No wonder she was so reluctant to say yes. Its a shame Jeff Hardy is no longer touring with them, she could've borrowed some muscle relaxants.

TKG: Did they really need that near fall segment in the Trish vs. Lita match? Russo wouldn't have booked this to go that long without showing some skin, or having Trish say from now on her name was going to be Women Having Our Respect Earned . The whole thing was real timekiller. I mean shit if you want to kill time run Albert vs. Palumbo already.

PAS: Rock doing his Special Olympics award show MC routine went on and one. I assume he has a new Popcorn Fart windbreaker he is selling. Maybe Puck Dupp will get to be a Babaganiouch on Heat or something.

TKG: They had a legit handicapped guy and they fire him for a worked handicap guy. What kind of shit is that?

PAS: No way the worked handicap guy will be anywhere near the ratings draw the real cripple was either.

PAS: Battle Royal was a Battle Royal, Batista looked great and Benjamin gets pushed this week, which means he is fed to a returning Rodney Mack next week. The booking was really screwed up here, four heels combine to beat up everyone, until a suspended face eliminates main heel, with the payoff being that a separate heel wins?

Tom, thanks for being more insightful and incisive in ONE paragraph than in an ENTIRE 37-posts-and-counting "RAW thread" on The W.

What would have made it more spectacular was if they had run something similar to the annual MLK Day photo/retread speech by Vince to open the show. Maybe next week they'll drag Tony Atlas out and claim Shelton is his lost Zulu son, and his true name is to be Saba Simba Jr.

These are desperate times. And desperate times call for desperate measures. Thus, its time to break out the Cubs/White Sox/Red Sox call to put the Kaiser back on the throne.
