The amount of hang-wringing smark stuff going on about Cena Vs. Rock is so fun to watch. It's great to see people that consider themselves above the fray being pulled back into it while seemingly not even realising they've been hooked. Like, getting upset that Cena interrupted Rocky's promo? That's the point. They're not doing it to shove Cena down your throat, they're doing it to piss off those who are pro-Rocky, whilst letting Cena cut a great promo to entertain those that are pro-Cena. They're turning this online "WWE hates Rock because he entertains the fans and isn't around all the time" nonsense into a full-blown angle, all the while walking the kayfabe line, and they're doing a damn fine job of it.

For ten months a year we knock the WWE for weak booking, and a week after the February PPV, they go into Mania gear. This show was awesome and strong and strong and awesome and awesomely strong. I don't see how they can keep this up for another month. This show felt like Mania is this Sunday.

THAT OPENING. Punk to Jericho to Bryan to John/Ortunga/AJ to Teddy/Santino to Punk to Jericho.

THAT ENDING. I don't care about Rock's notes; let's see Cena go that long extemporaneously. Cena botched the kung-pow punchline twice (he dropped use the word "bitch" and couldn't get across the metaphor to his constant RAW presence). But I think his attitude here is the best of all Cenas: he didn't use the unfortunate angry Frankenstein face to convey intensity, and he didn't bust into rhyme. He mixed his better character elements and gave us a fighter with swagger. I like this Cena. We need more of this Cena.

And speaking of Cena opponents, I'm falling in love with Miz again despite the cliche of the heel losing streak. Drew already has this (and Drew HAS to be the guy to win for Teddy at Mania). With last week's SmackDown and last night's RAW, Miz has both hands on this angle and is doing it dead right. Of course Jericho also did this and did it well, but everyone is stealing from him, right? You'd think he'd be flattered.

I did not fast forward the DVR one second during the opening 30 minutes (sans commercials). That's the first time I have been able to say that in a LONG time. The closing promo was pretty sweet, too.

Forget about who Henry pissed off, who did the entire tag division piss out? Hell, most of the teams have only been together for a few weeks! Have they seriously not thought of another way for a monster to get his heat back??

The GMs color coding last night was foreshadowing. The WWE Board of Directors announced (wwe.com) that next week, Big Johnny (@WWERawGM) will GM Smackdown and Teddy Long (@GMSmackdown) will be GM of RAW. Will they swap Twitter handles? This will only lead to confusion.

@WWERawGM
The Board of Directors has determined that next week, I'll be in charge of #SmackDown. What should I bring @AksanaWWE as a present?

Big Johnny macking on Long's Russian mail order bride* while David Otunga threatens to legally deport her will make for good TV.

* I know, I know. Aksana is Lithuanian and they will beat her with shovels if she should ever return.

Possible Wrestlemania Card (confirmed matches denoted with an *):

*Cena vs The Rock (has to go last).

*Triple H vs the Undertaker (any other year SHOULD go last).

*Jericho vs Punk (WWE title, you'd think THIS should go last, but it won't).

*Bryan vs Sheamus (fourth last match, possibly. Should be a great match).

Ryder vs Kane (a ready-made program, won't be shocked if Ryder interrupts Philosopher Kane next RAW).

Eve vs Kelly Kelly (they have to do something, right?)

Big Johnny/Bowtunga vs Long/Santino for control over both shows.

Rhodes vs Big Show.

MITB; gonna happen. Miz/Truth/Kofi/Orton/DOLPH/Swagger.

Tag titles; dark match.

So other than Eve (who did a killer heel promo last night) vs Kelly, am I missing anything/anyone with this projected card in the sense that every match will be either high quality or the crowd will get into?

And is this not shaping up to be one of the best Mania's ever?

As I said last week, I don't see them doing MitB, especially now that they already have a big gimmick match in the HiaC match on the card. I reckon most of the crowd that would have been in MitB will be consolidated into the Johnny/Teddy match, because a Santino/Otunga singles match has no place on WrestleMania (unless they're just DYING for a three minute comedy special).

I can see these being consolidated into a men's match with valets. That leaves Beth against ... Kharma? Natalya? A returning Layla? A returning Michelle McCool?

There is literally nothing I want more in the world (of professional wrestling) right now than for someone to blow up the picture of the writing on Rock's wrist and reveal that each line starts with "BLADES IS..." and that he was just writing down the taglines from the BENDING THE RULES trailer because he loved it so much. What a special treat, fans!

The extended opening segment was as awesomely Monday Night Wars era Raw as Kane destroying the cruiser...er, tag division was terribly Dying Days Spaceship Logo WCW Nitro. In fact, lots to love on the show, so let's get the bad parts out of the way first. Kane doesn't need rebuilding from losing to Cena (everybody loses to Cena) if he's just going to be facing Ryder at Wrestlemania (everybody beats up Ryder). I was hoping for a second that the payoff there was going to be Kane attacking everybody, only to point to the back and have Ryder wheel out wearing his own mask (with Zack Ryder Wig attached) to say "Woo woo woo, I HATE IT!" and thus reveal himself as Kane's new protege/partner (Broskis of Destruction? Sure!) to set up a Fatal Four Way tag match.

Also, I don't know if it's because they really are mad at him for getting hurt and then differently hurt while working hurt, or if it's because he's filling in for Barrett, or if it's because they just genuinely can't be bothered to worry about too many people at once, but yeah, kinda sucks how they just have Henry going down so easily now without having anyone really selling that he's only losing because he's not at 100%. Guy was too amazing last year for them to just discard now and I hope they remember that.

Anyway, onto the good and great! Echoing the love for the opening segment, where they managed to sell three 'Mania matches to varying degrees. Sheamus/Bryan still needs the most work, but the crowds have been significantly more into the Teddy vs. Johnny showdowns than I ever would have imagined, and the Punk/Jericho segment was exactly what they needed. I don't know that Punk's "I'm the top guy!" claim holds even a little bit of water, but he SOLD it like it did, and his "I woulda been perfectly happy to have a great match with you at Wrestlemania if you just asked me" was a nice anti-hero character touch, as was his hyper-meta-aware "Everybody else is pointing at that sign, I just have to point to my belt" line. And Jericho's constant reactions of looking like he has hurt feelings are selling the unspoken idea that he knows he's running out of time. The attack at the top of the stage was very nice, too. I feel like they screwed these guys up by (I'm still sticking with) changing the Rumble finish, but this got them right back on track like Punk had been hinting it would over the last week, so I'm very happy.

That they are, intentionally or not, also setting the table for/prepping the rest of the audience to care about an actual Punk/Bryan feud after Wrestlemania is a wonderful bonus, and strangely proactive.

Rock/Cena was great. I'm of the crew that believes that we're getting The Boys working us (effectively, it turns out) and Rock/Cena maybe even working The Boys, so again, I don't really care about the content of what they're saying, just how they deliver it, and this was top notch. That's two weeks in a row for Cena nailing his delivery and cutting out the eye-rolling, tension-breaking garbage that makes him so frustrating, and also not doing it in his Foghorn Leghorn Southern Lawyer Serious Guy Voice. This is the guy who got over in the first place, and it's fun to see him finally pop back up again. And The Rock was great doing all his The Rock stuff, and then switching over into "hey, wait, how dare you call me Big Daddy Bitch!" mode to make sure Cena's good work did not go to waste. They spun their wheels for a long, long time on this and made a lot of mistakes along the way, but they're locked in now and can bring this home, which is genuinely exciting.

Also, Otunga talkin' Oscars and his orange-dominated sweater were the secret ingredients of greatness that made everything else possible.

This is a pretty damn good question/point. The people doing the awful trailers and design work for WWE Films: The Studio can't possibly be the Raw/Smackdown production people, can they? Or do they split up their production people into Serious and Comedy teams? That would explain a lot, since the pre-taped comedy PPV promos are usually awful (or at least have been for a while, there was a time when they could pull off the West Side Story promo, say) and the three WWE Films "comedies" have looked unwatchable bad even from the standards of someone who watches professional friggin' wrestling, but HHH's serious movie had a pretty terrible trailer, too. You would think the one thing their production people would be able to do well as it relates to movies would be to cut a good trailer, since it's the one thing they almost always knock it out of the park even when the material from Raw/Smackdown is terrible, and yet...and yet...

That said, I'm probably going to start a podcast totally devoted to BENDING THE RULES and would appreciate a BENDING THE RULES universe fan fiction section of the board, please. Thanks.

Yeah, I think MITB is out too. You could easily take care of most of those guys by having 'Team Johnny' be Otunga, Del Rio, Christian and Henry and then having 'Team Long' as Santino, Kofi, Truth and a returning Rey Mysterio. Miz can wrestle Orton. Ziggler and Swagger can either wrestle for the tag titles or...I dunno, face each other?

I dunno, saying that "there's already a high profile gimmick match so there can't be a MITB" doesn't wash when you can use the same logic against having THREE Could Go Last At Mania Quality Type Matches, along with Bryan Sheamus as a solid offering which could main event any other PPV.

Kane: I'm afraid I cannot fight you, Young Ryder. You see, I only trounced you to spark the hatred within Cena.

Ryder: Come on, bro. I so owe you, dude.

Kane: [puffs from pipe] I simply can't muster the required animosity, my dear boy.

Ryder: GIVE INTO YOUR PITY!

Like CRZ I had to track down the show because my DVR didn't catch anything after Cena came out.

-Rock's great, but if every time he come out we get a 20+ minute parrot fest with the crowd about "trending", I'm gonna be going to the Cena camp.

-Cena's rebuttal was great. Short, concise, and had more substance in 2 minutes than the Rock had all night. If the notes comment was a work, then great booking. If it was a shoot, good for Cena for lighting a fire under Rock.

-Jericho's motivation is weak IMO. Everyone is a wannabe? The only thing Punk took from Jericho was calling himself the "best". And hell, Jericho's "Best in the world at what I do" is a ripoff of Wolverine. I was hoping that Jericho's angle would be more about how Punk was manipulating the people into making him a star, but Jericho could manipulate them better than anyone (thus explaining all the Kaufman stuff).

-Screw Kane. I hate how protected this ass has to be. If his heat is so weak he has to bury six guys to keep it, he needs to find another job.

-Edge's movie looks horrible, but he looks like he could be a decent actor. But these guys really need to look somewhere other than WWE films. They will never get Hollwood cred, because WWE films is the equivalent of the XFL.

-Kelly Kelly hooking up with Ryder would do a lot to give him his nuts back. Lame or not, she's a heat machine and would be seen as a major upgrade to Eve.

The reason MITB may not be happening seems to have more to do with fitting everything on the show time wise, not because of it being another gimmick.

HHH/UT, Rock/Cena and (maybe) Jericho/Punk all are going to want a lot of time. MITB has a bigger chance of running long and it's tougher to cut from if something earlier ran long.

True. HHH/UT and Rock/Cena will take at LEAST an hour and a half. Then probably another hour between Punk/Jericho and Shaemus/Bryan. That leaves 1 1/2 hours. Still, I'd rather have MITB and another match than 4 or 5 15 matches I don't care about.

And I've never liked the "Let's get everyone on the card" mentality. Wrestlemania should be something that you have to earn to even make it on the show.

The opening Punk/Jericho segment was exactly what the feud needed. Great stuff by both men. It was probably a little too long: around halfway through they seemed to be getting a little too inside, with diminishing crowd reactions, reminiscent of the boring Punk/Nash promos from the summer. But they turned it around in the end. Loved the Dancing With The Stars line, and "everyone's pointing at the Wrestlemania sign, I'm just going to point at my title". I'm also starting to get annoyed by Jericoat - I really want the lights to start malfunctioning on live TV.

I'm being entertained by the Long/Laurinaitis dispute, and Santino has been a guilty pleasure as of late too. The live crowd is eating it up, and whatever we get at Mania should be more entertaining than Lawler/Cole.

If you're watching Raw for good wrestling matches, you're watching the wrong show. That's what Smackdown is for.

Kelly Kelly was trending for a long time last night. Does she have the ring name which is easiest to get trending on Twitter? Given the WWE's obsession with it, can we expect to see more wrestling names in the same vain? Coming soon: Jim Jim and John John.

I am really enjoying Eve's heel act. She's obviously smoking hot too which is a bonus. Pair her up with an up and coming heel, like right now. I can see her doing a lot more for the likes of Dolph Ziggler than Vickie Guerrero.

In the minority here I'm sure, but I'm looking forward to Bryan/Sheamus at Mania more than Punk/Jericho. If it's given time it'll be a hell of a match, and if Sheamus wins, I really think he's going to make it as WWE's next big babyface star.

Rock promo was fantastic. They always are. You're welcome, bitch.

I agree that Cena's 2 minutes >> Rock's 30 minutes. I kept waiting for the Rock to call him back to the ring and tear him a new one, but it never really came.

I think Cena pointing out the Rock's written notes was a shoot. Here's why: WWE sucks at being subtle. They never hint, suggest, or imply things. If they want us to see something, they beat us over the head with it and they always have. If that line about Rock's "tattoo" was a work, they would've given us a super close-up of it so we could see it for ourselves, not just let Cena mention it then have nothing else come of it. Knaw-meen?

That being said, I think Rock was genuinely pissed at Cena for calling him on the notes thing and I think Rock was justified in being pissed. Working the Boys is one thing (that I never like), but calling out another performer on TV or in front of a live audience for something as "insider" as that is crossing the line, IMO. It would be like if Rock came out and told us what Cena's "interrupt the promo" cue is 10 minutes in advance, then Rock have give the cue and Cena came out just as "predicted". IMO, you just cant do that stuff. It makes the other guy look bad in a way that doesnt translate to the angle at hand.

UNLESS (!!!) Rock & Cena planned that by themselves without letting anyone else know they were gonna do it, but if that were the case I think Rock's comeback wouldve been better that him stammering all over himself telling us "Rock = Dwayne Johnson! Dwayne Johnson = The Rock!!" over and over.

Not necessarily. Lots of shooty stuff ends up on TV all the time. I believe the addage is "If it's NOT on TV, it's NOT a work", which makes more sense if you think about it.

Well, based on the Raw format sheet, the opener is more like the semi-main and the 10:45 match is the curtain jerker.

Anyone else notice that when Primo and Epico come out Cole ALWAYS mentions how much having Rosa in their corner has helped them? Yet she does nothing but dance. How does that help them win matches?

She distracts their opponents at opportune moments. Also she tells the crowd to shut up in Spanish, so their opponents are without the vocal support of the fans.

Totally agree. During the interview the only thing I thought that could've made it better was that whole "my only purpose for coming back is to destroy you at Wrestlemania" would've felt like a bigger deal if he was saying it as the Rumble winner.

I think his motivation is supposed to be flimsy. It's crazy to try to claim ownership of the word best or wearing suits, but Jericho is a jealous egomaniac.

Interesting that no one between 5 - 18 has ever won the Rumble. I wonder if it's because the bookers figure if he didn't come in right away, or later on that the fans don't buy him as a serious shot to win?
