TONIGHT: It’s 1/2/12 which not only means the first episode of Raw of the year, but also we’ll finally get the reveal behind the mysterious videos – unless they Brodus Clay us with them. Speaking of Clay, he’s supposed to debut tonight, but we know how that goes. Also, in a WWE Championship match, CM Punk defends against Dolph Ziggler. I’ll be doing this report on the heels of an argh-worthy end to the Rose Bowl, so forgive me if I’m saltier than usual!

- WWE Open.

- They intro’d with a graphic of CM Punk taking on Dolph Ziggler for the title while Michael Cole talked about the match. The Raw theme played in the background.

- A video packaged aired of last week’s final segment, where Kane spoke for the first time since his return. The clip ended with last week’s very loud “let’s go Cena/Cena sucks” debate.

- RAW Open.

- The camera panned the crowd, then John Cena’s music hit. “This is Jerry Lawler country,” he told the camera as he came out. Lawler said the reaction Cena gets is not getting to him, he’s sure of it. Uh-oh, that must mean it will in the end. Cena wished everyone at the arena and at home a happy new year. Crowd’s response? “You suck.” He said he’d make some changes to himself in 2012, starting with wearing less underwear. The ladies in the crowd liked that. Resolution #2: His father is banned from TV forever, saying the last segment he was on (“This is Your Life”) was worse than the Christmas Creature’s debut. His third resolution is to slap around the Rock at Wrestlemania, and prove that he truly lives by “hustle, loyalty and respect.”

Cena said last week, he was a bit emotional, but not toward any of the fans. He went back to the old argument of, “you paid good money to be in the arena, you can cheer whatever you want to cheer.” Cena said wrestling matches are how they settle things in WWE, but Kane wants to do things differently. Cena vowed not to turn his back on his fans and said there’s no better feeling than performing for the fans. He thanked the fans, but before he could get any further into this sappy promo and perhaps break down in tears, Kane’s music hit and he spoke…from somewhere.

Kane said Cena will learn to embrace the hate and Cena will witness the power of hate tonight. Flames shot off from the top of the turnbuckles, startling Cena. Kane never did come out.

- Punk vs. Ziggler for the WWE Title is still to come. The graphic was interrupted by a short mystery video with “The End Begins Tonight” on the screen.

[Commercial Break]

(1) Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes
During Bryan’s entrance, they put up a graphic for Bryan vs. Big Show for the World Title on Friday night. Vicious kicks to the shoulder and upper torso by Bryan, but he then ran into a boot in the corner. Arm-wringer for a take-down by Rhodes. Cole discussed Dustin Rhodes coming out and trying to talk some sense into Cody on Smackdown this past week. Rhodes continued the work on the arm as the crowd lightly chanted “Daniel Bryan.” Back elbow by Bryan, followed by a running clothesline. Rhodes with a low uppercut, a la Goldust, but he couldn’t capitalize. Bryan tossed him out of the ring, then ran off the apron and hit a knee to the face. Rhodes sent Bryan into the turnbuckle back in the ring, and a Beautiful Disaster kick got two. Suplex attempt, but Bryan turned it into an inside package for the win.

Winner: Bryan, at 3:20. I feel like Bryan could’ve used a more decisive, dominating win heading into Friday’s showdown with Big Show, but I guess WWE is booking him as a guy who gets by via the skin of his teeth.

Bryan celebrated by standing on the announce table, arms raised, and doing the same on the barricade.

- They aired a video recap of R-Truth attacking Miz last week.

- Miz knocked, then entered Johnny Ace’s office. Ace said what Truth did was unprofessional and he doesn’t agree with it. Miz was upset that Ace wasn’t going to take further action. Ace cued up a video of why Truth attacked Miz in the first place, that being Miz’s attack on Truth two months ago. Miz played dumb, but Ace said Miz was scared. Ace said he’d have people keep an eye on Truth so he doesn’t attack Miz, especially during Miz’s match…against Sheamus. “I’ll be a sitting duck out there.” “Better than a lame duck.” AAHHH I can’t take all these Duck references! Miz walked out Ace’s office and down a long hallway. Truth appeared in front of the camera, flapped his wings like a duck and quacked.

[Commercial Break]

- They aired a highlight video of the first Royal Rumble, from 1988.

- They showed the exterior of the arena in Memphis.

- Another graphic aired reminding fans of the Punk vs. Ziggler title match to take place tonight.

- Wade Barrett came out. As he did, they showed highlights of Barrett vs. Orton from Smackdown this past Friday, including the brawl in the elevator. Barrett said he didn’t want to come out and wish everyone a happy new year, because he doesn’t care about their new year let alone their old year! He said his 2012 is already fantastic, because it’s been devoid of Randy Orton. He talked up winning the Royal Rumble and said there’s not a person on the planet who could deny…something, but last year’s runner-up, Santino Marella came out. How convenient!

(2) Wade Barrett vs. Santino Marella
Marella power-walked five laps around the ring before the match started. Marella got the mic and he reminded Barrett that he lasted longer in the Rumble last year than Barrett. He said the Barrett Barrage would be run over by the Santino Marella Choo-Choo Trains. Barrett easily knocked Marella to the mat once the match began. “The End Begins Tonight” is trending on Twitter. Marella turned things around in the corner but couldn’t hit the Cobra, as Barrett landed a back-kick to the gut. Winds of Change side slam for the win.

Winner: Barrett, at 1:19. Hard to argue with how they’re building Barrett.

- The Bellas were arguing backstage while Miz was there, but his attention was diverted. He asked them if they’d seen R-Truth. They hadn’t…but they did see Little Jimmy. Miz was not amused. The camera continued to follow him until he walked out of view…then Truth stepped out from a little side area and gave the “shhhh” sign to the camera.

[Commercial Break]

- Sheamus and Miz made separate entrances for their one-on-one match. Miz was looking over his shoulder the entire time. Miz went after Sheamus before the match started and hit a DDT. He tired Sheamus’ arm up in the rope, but Sheamus fought off an attempt to hook the other. Sheamus pounded away on the chest of Miz as Miz stood on the apron. He was even more aggressive with them than usual and probably hit him with more than a dozen. Miz collected himself and fled through the crowd. R-Truth’s voice was heard over the PA.

Truth said he was in the crowd and they finally found him. He happened to be in the same section as MIz. Truth said he ran into Little Jimmy, who was imaginary. And Jimmy doesn’t like Miz. Truth said Jimmy told him Miz needs to get got. Truth started advancing toward Miz, who went back to ringside. He was met there with a Brogue Kick by Sheamus. Truth, in black pants and a black hoodie, came over the barricade. He stood over Miz, then walked to the announce table and grabbed a bottle of water. He drilled Miz in the head with it. Truth went back intot eh crowd and said this week’s beat-down was brought to us by Little Jimmy. He asked a kid in the crowd what he thought about it, and the kid shouted, “happy new year Miz!” They replayed the bottle shot. Miz hasn’t had a great few weeks.

- Punk vs. Ziggler for the WWE Title, tonight.

[Commercial Break]

- The announcers talked about WWE InterAction on WWE.com.

- They showed how Ziggler earned a title shot this week against Punk, and Johnny Ace’s part in it.

- Josh Mathews was backstage with Dolph Ziggler, who, as the camera panned back, was doing a headstand. Vickie Guerrero walked into the picture as he got to his feet. Ziggler said he pinned Punk last week as simply as he did his headstand. Ziggler got a little political in his speech, saying the USA is in debt, but he’s got a surplus of everything except the WWE Championship. He told fans they’ll want to know the time and place they were when Ziggler became WWE Champion.

- Zack Ryder and Eve Torres were backstage. Ryder said he was playing his tag match with her from last week on a constant loop. He asked Eve if she wanted to watch it later. Jack Swagger walked up and said there’s an impostor walking around calling himself the US Title. Ryder panicked, despite the fact that he was wearing the title. Ryder said just because both of their last names end in “er” doesn’t mean Ryder won’t send Swagger to one. That’s a reach. They started arguing, so Johnny Ace walked up and put them in a six-man eliminatino tag match later tonight: Swagger, Kane and Mark Henry vs. Ryder, Big Show and Cena. Then he looked off in the distance, satisfied, as only wrestlers and people in the WWE Universe do.

- CM Punk was walking backstage. His WWE title match is next.

[Commercial Break]

(3) CM Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler – WWE Championship Match
Formal introductions took place when both men were in the ring. Loud “CM Punk” chant by the fans. Punk was winning a mat battle with Ziggler in the first minute of the match, but Ziggler did his own amateur wrestling with an ankle pick and a pin attempt. With both men on their feet, another “CM Punk” chant began. Hard back-breaker by Punk for a one-count. Jumping elbowdrop missed the mark and Punk responded with a bodyslam and performed several leg-drops, good for a two-count. Another “CM Punk” chant with Ziggler contained in a rest-hold. Ziggler hot-shotted Punk, but Punk fell short and caught the middle rope. He came up holding his mouth/nose, but I didn’t spy any blood. Jumping elbowdrop this time hit, good for a two-count. Punk kicked Ziggler out of the ring, then went for a suicide dive, but Ziggler gave him a right hand. Punk, still teetering on the ropes in the ring, was given a neck-breaker by Ziggler, right onto the apron. In the ring, cover for two at 5:01. They went to break at 5:11 of the match.

[Commercial Break]

Back at 8:24 with Punk making a comeback. Jumping leg lariat and both men were down. Slam by Punk for two at 9:36. Ziggler got a near-fall just after 10:00 into the match. Splash in the corner, then his inverted slam for two. “CM Punk” chant again. Ziggler tried a Zig Zag but Punk held onto the turnbuckle, pulling off the pad in the process. Running knee, then a bulldog. He signaled for the GTS, but Johnny Ace walked down and pointed out the pad of the buckle. The ref was distracted as Punk put Ziggler in the Anaconda Vice. Referee never saw Ziggler tapped. That angered Punk, who was distracted long enough for Ziggler to get to his feet. Punk ducked Ziggler, who ran into Ace and Punk put Ziggler up for the GTS. Ziggler got out and shoved Punk into Ace, who was on the apron and subtly pulled down the top rope (the ref didn’t see it), sending Punk spilling to the floor. Ziggler ended up winning via count-out.

Winner: Ziggler, via count-out, at 13:03. Timing was everything in that finishing sequence, and everybody seemed to play their part well.

After replays, Ziggler took the WWE Title and walked into the crowd with it.

- The six-man elimination tag match is still to come. The graphic was again interrupted. “He is Here” said the video.

[Commercial Break]

- Royal Rumble 1995 highlights aired. How did Vince McMahon announce with his voice that high for so long?

- They showed some of Elvis’ outfits in glass cases in Memphis.

(4) The Bella Twins vs. Eve Torres & Kelly Kelly
Quick stink-face by Kelly before she was taken down by Brie. Tag in to Nikki, and they did a double-team hair-pull to take Kelly down for two. Eve came in and kicked Nikki in the face. She set up for her moonsault, but knocked Brie off the apron instead. Nikki ran into a back elbow, then a springboard kick to the face. Eve then went to the top rope and connected on a moonsault. Pin broken up by Brie. Kelly tried to charge in but he took care of Kelly. The twins did the switch and they rolled up Eve (and “rolled up” is me being generous) for the win.

Winners: The Bellas, at 2:06. Umm…their outfits looked good!

- Johnny Ace and David Otunga were conferencing backstage until CM Punk barged in. Punk was unhappy about how Ace almost cost him the title. Ace said Punk’s problem is really with Dolph Ziggler, who has now defeated Punk twice. He gave Ziggler a title shot at the Royal Rumble, with a special guest referee. That person is Ace. Punk said if Ace screws him out of the title at the Rumble, he’ll beat Ace like a bitch. Punk walked off as Otunga and Ace shared their frowny faces.

[Commercial Break]

- WWE’s latest “DYK” was interrupted by what I presume is the final video in the mystery. “She holds the mystery of my rebirth.” “She has spoken: It is time. The end of the world as you know it is here. Now.” The screen then went dark and the camera shook as it focused on the crowd in Memphis. The lights went out and the fans cheered. They were dark for a while as the crowd chanted “Y2J.” An image lit up on the stage…the jacket was lit up as Chris Jericho did his pose with his back to the crowd. Then his music hit and he came to the ring in his sparkly jacket. Crowd popped huge when his music hit. He celebrated with fans around ringside for quite some time, to the point that I almost expected a heel turn off the bat. “Y2J” chants once his music died down.

For such scary promos, Jericho sure is elated. He pointed to sections of the crowd and they cheered accordingly. Back in the ring, Jericho dropped the mic and I thought he was going to heel it up but he did more cheering. Jericho left the ring again and took another lap around the crowd, slapping hands with everyone. The crowd was getting a bit restless at this point. He even took a camera from the cameraman and twirled it around. He slapped more hands as he went back up the ramp. As he looked out upon the crowd from the top of the ramp, many started booing. Then he turned around, smile still on his face, and headed to the back. A lot of people are going to be disappointed with that return. It’d be funny if he was never heard from for another year-and-a-half again.

[Commercial Break]

- As everyone made their entrances for the main event, the announcers talked as if nothing happened in the last segment. When Kane’s music hit and his pyro went off, Kane never came out. David Otunga walked to the ring and conferenced with the referee and Justin Roberts. Roberts announced that Kane refused to come out, and thus the match would be a handicap match.

(5) The Big Show & Zack Ryder & John Cena vs. Mark Henry & Jack Swagger – Handicap Elimination Match
Cena whipped Swagger into the buckle then dropkicked him. Jericho didn’t kill the crowd as they did their dueling chant. Swagger took Cena down and stomped him in the corner as they went to break at 1:12.

[Commercial Break]

Back at 4:06 with Swagger and Cena still in it. Swagger bomb for two. Bit of a test of strength there, but Cena won and tagged Big Show at 4:57. Show hit the ropes and took Swagger down with a shoulder tackle. Not much of a pop probably because it looked like it was slow-motion. Swagger tagged Henry before Show could use his knockout punch. The two went face-to-face jawing at each other. The men exchanged blows as Show staggered Henry. Flying shoulder tackle that time. Henry went to ringside and Show followed him out. Henry tried to use a chair but Show punched the chair out of Henry’s hand. He hit Henry with it and the ref DQ’d him and Henry at 6:35. Actually, Roberts just said they were “eliminated” and Cole said they were counted out. Ryder and Swagger were in the ring and Ryder got his knees up on a corner charge. Broski Boot. Swagger came back with the ankle-lock, and Ryder tried to make a tag – he did, at 7:49. Swagger bumped around for Cena, then was the recipient of an Attitude Adjustment.

Winners, and survivors: Cena and Ryder, at 8:24. That felt kinda pointless.

Ryder clutched his ankle in pain in the corner. Kane’s music played and his fireworks went off. Kane climbed through the ring and he attacked Ryder. Cena charged and Kane and Kane grabbed him and covered Cena’s mouth with his gloved hand. That was apparently enough to knock Cena out. Kane then turned his attention to Ryder. He dragged Ryder back into the hole. That’s always a good visual. Cena pulled Ryder back out before he could go all the way in. Cena asked for a medic to check on Ryder’s leg. With the lights still dim, fire and smoke exploded out of the hole as Kane’s music played. Smoke continued to billow out, close-up on Cena’s face, WWE logo-wipe, and we’re out.

That last 45 minutes featured
- CM Punk using an awkward setup to get around TV PG restrictions when it comes to certain words
- Chris Jericho doing a heel parody of a Chris Jericho return
- John Cena & Zack Ryder (as John Cena's girlfriend - ankle injury preventing escape clinches it) appearing in a horror movie, where Kane apparently tried to pull Ryder to hell and/or burn him alive, but John Cena saved him just in time. Kane should've been burned alive too, but since we didn't see the body...

This all happened in the same hour! The range here was amazing.

What a disappointment. Jericho's return is either the most brilliant or most moronic ever. It'd be great if they brought back guys who aren't really coming back for the next few weeks. Goldberg next week, Warrior the week after, Michaels the week after, then Batista , then Lesnar - all to do more or less the same thing.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

Cole's burial of Bryan during the match against Rhodes was just brutal. I mean calling him the most nondescript champion ever is gonna help Bryan get over and draw money. Miz is totally being booked to look like the biggest bitch ever running from Sheamus and getting destroyed by R Truth again. As far as the Jericho segment well at first I hated it and thought it was really stupid and I kept waiting for him to actually talk and blast the fans, but looking back on it this was pretty brilliant the way he trolled the fans and at the end he got the fans to boo him. He in much better shape then he was the last time we saw him. The DDP yoga worked for him I guess. Good job by Cena saving damsel in distress Ryder. Kudos to him on irritating the hell out of me in his opening promo. Should be interesting to see how the Main Event did in the ratings with a jobber like Swagger involved and the fact that the last time Ryder was in the main event it bombed out.

I really hope we never see Chris Jericho again and that's never explained.

That Jericho segment was an all-star, hall of fame, top five greatest RAW moment that should be studied in wrestling schools for generations to come. He's an absolute master. A master of crowd control, a master of crowd fucking, a master of crowd fucking over. A megaface return turned into a megaheel turn in five minutes of some of the most magnificent time wasting ever on television.

And here I thought the only highlight of the show (for me) was going to be Kelly Kelly's "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!" as Eve was getting Twin Magicked.

Completely agree with both of these assessments. And while it'd be funny in a twisted way if Cubs Fan were right, I'm just glad that he's (probably) wrong because it would deprive us of being able to see said master work his magic. There aren't many (if any) people here who've missed Jericho more than me.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

By the way, John Laurinaitis' Twitter (twitter.com) has been entertaining all night.

To wit:

@WWERawGM John Laurinaitis
And to those wondering why Brodus didn't debut tonight, I have my reasons. He will debut next week, I promise. Why would I lie? #Raw

@WWERawGM John Laurinaitis
What a show! Easily the best #Raw of 2012.

I was half expecting that video to flick back on during Jericho's charade giving us an instant Jericho/Taker feud.

I get what he was doing. It was different. It was clever. It wasn't really compelling to watch though and I'm not sure another heel is what they really need anyways.

I enjoyed Cena's homoerotic save, but it is a weird feeling to have these Kane Raws end almost exactly like they did 15 years ago.

I never knew they had jugs of milk on ice backstage, and has Otunga been matching the travel mug with the sweater for awhile now and I never noticed?

Hell of a thing is, I fell for it. I was legit getting annoyed/underwhelmed, as I was hoping on a killer promo. After awhile I realized the lack of promo WAS the promo.

Simply brilliant.

I'm bummed out about the main event, simply because when the rating bombs due to;

1) No Kane.
2) Swagger.

Ryder is going to get scapegoated. Again.

At least Cole laid off of him this week.

Since we know how much WWE loves Twitter, Brodus Clay has was trending pretty steadily tonight and just now Hornswoggle was, because of Kane coming+going from beneath the ring.

The look on Ryder's (and Cena's) faces was basically "Are you serious, bro? We're in one of those over-the-top Kane/Taker storylines now?"

Jericho was amazing...totally incongruous with any of the creepy videos but so over-the-top it had to be heelish. And reminicent of the Taker/HHH wordless-promo from last year... Let's see where he goes with it next week...

Punk/Ziggler at the Rumble works for me!

This type of reaction of course is part of the joke.

I also don't think the crowd played along like he might have hoped. The initial crowd pop was solid, but it didn't seem to blow the roof off of the place.

I think every type of reaction is part of the joke, right?

I do have to applaud WWE in that between Jericho, Laurinaitis and Otunga, I truly appreciate the increasingly sophisticated humor in these otherwise terrible shows.

It's the "C'mon" that slays me. It's kind of disappointing how he's unable to reliably translate that characterization on television, because it might work.

Jericho: earns points for being out of the box. Kaufman-esque for sure and I'm glad to see him back on the TV. I'll be annoyed if/when the video vignettes are never mentioned again. I guess if you consider them in context as a send-up of "Someone's returning!" vignettes, and his return as a send-up of "I've returned!" appearances, it's pretty grand, as long as they're okay with 90% of the people not getting it. Actually, I think half of the WWE Universe will forget they even happened.

Jericho's jacket was kinda awesome. The rest of that whole segment just felt like I was getting trolled by a master. If he never shows up again, I could die happy. That was some puppet master shit there and he had me by the strings.

John Laurinaitis really was 'good' tonight. I didn't hate him as much as usual and I could finally see some acting on his part. Otunga did not drink from his cup. Brodus Clay will probably never debut on Raw.

Zack Ryder is still undeserving of this push. How long will the WWE keep this joke going?

John Cena's facial expression he does when Kane's pyro goes off it pretty good. He's actually trying to act scared even though we all know what's gonna happen in the end with Super Cena beating Kane. What we need to shake up this feud is a wedding between Cena and Ryder with Kane popping up through the ring. That would be funny.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

I have no desire to ever see it again, but it should be required viewing for any aspiring wrestler.

Prediction: He'll mock everyone for being so easily manipulated and segue that into telling the fans they are doing the same thing with Punk.

Why did Cena get mad at Show when the double elimination did everything to help Cena's side?

Glad to see Dolph getting promoted to a top heel status, he's earned his shot. Problem is, Dolph is going to be overshadowed with all the stuff going on.

And I think those boo's for Jericho is a bad sign.. There's one thing to get boo's on heel heat, but I think the boo's tonight were out of boredom and confusion. Jericho can only be a heel at this point because he didn't come back to be the #3 face on the show behind Cena and Punk.

And Johnny Ace had his best performance on Raw tonight. He nailed everything right including that sequence with Punk-Dolph. Good job.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! You know what I'm thankful for? The fact that NXT doesn't give a damn that it's a major American holiday, and has aired a brand-new episode at a time when there is nothing on television.
