TONIGHT: The build to TLC continues. After laying out former friends R-Truth and John Morrison in consecutive weeks, who’s next for The Miz? Also, who will CM Punk face at TLC for the WWE Championship? And did Roddy Piper’s comments to John Cena last week sink in? Also: I’m fighting a stupefying sinus headache, so if my recap is shorter than usual, you’ll know why.

-WWE Open.

-RAW Open.

-Fireworks inside the arena in Tampa, Florida, then Michael Cole introduced himself and Jerry Lawler.

-John Cena came out. He recapped last week’s Piper’s Pit. He pandered to the audience by saying it’s they’re right to cheer or boo him or anyone else. He said fan reactions are not the big deal, but the big deal is the slap from last week. Not Piper’s slap, but the referee’s hand slapping the mat three times to signal CM Punk defeating Alberto Del Rio. He said the only thing bigger than him vs. Rock at ‘Mania is for the match to have the WWE Title on the line. Alberto Del Rio interrupted.

He argued that he deserved another title shot. Del Rio showed a clip of Punk using the exposed turnbuckle to win. Del Rio said Punk should’ve been DQ’d and he should be champion. Vickie Guerrero’s voice boomed “excuse me!” and she walked out with Dolph Ziggler. She said Ziggler deserves a title shot and he ran down his credentials. Cena joked about Ziggler’s past gimmicks and Cole force-feeding Ziggler’s “show-off” nickname. Cena suggested a new nickname: “jerk-off.” Ziggler said he backs it up every night, but Cena pointed out that Ziggler won’t fight Zack Ryder for the US Title. Ziggler said the title shot should go to “everyone’s favorite hashtag heel, and that’s me.” Miz then came out.

He put down the other contenders while pimping himself up as the 2011 Superstar of the Year (Slammy’s are next week!). John Laurinaitis walked out. He said tonight, each of the men will face a Smackdown superstar, and if they win, they’ll be in a WWE Championship match at TLC. They’ll also do a contract signing with CM Punk tonight. Cena is in a special match – a social experiment, if you weeel. He told Cena to see him later tonight for details. For the others, if they win, they’re in. Miz’s match is first, against Randy Orton. Ah, the old “I deserve a title shot, no I do!” start. At least something unique came out of it.

[Commercial Break]

(1) The Miz vs. Randy Orton
Back-and-forth start, but Orton with a clothesline, Garvin stomp, then suplex. Big boot by Miz showed a lot of light as he took over on offense. Back-breaker by Miz for a near-fall. Miz countered Orton’s patented DDT, but ran into a scoop slam on the floor at ringside. At 3:59, Wade Barrett’s music played and he came out. The distraction led to Orton being counted out.

Winner: Miz, via count-out, at 4:29.

As Orton charged the ring post-match (after chasing Barrett up the ramp to get counted out), Barrett attacked him from behind, knocking him to the ground.

-A graphic was shown with Miz and Punk as two men so far who will fight for the WWE Title at TLC.

-Up next, an important announcement regarding the WWE Network. That’s quite the incentive to keep the fans tuned in.

[Commercial Break]

-After a shot of the Tampa skyline, a video aired on the WWE Network. It hyped first-run programs and matches, plus reality shows and classic footage.

-John Laurinaitis was texting backstage with Zack Ryder suggesting legends for the WWE Legends’ House. He brought up Iron Sheik, Hillbilly Jim, and Papa Shango. Laurinaitis said Ziggler has complained that just because Ryder has signatures on a petition doesn’t mean he’s worthy of a title shot. Cena walked in with Ryder sunglasses, hair, and headband. He acted goofy (goofier than usual anyway) and Laurinaitis wanted to put Cena in a match with a popular talent…Zack Ryder. Laurinaitis tried to drive a wedge between the two and said the WWE Universe wants to see it. He said if Ryder wins the match, he’ll get a future US Title match against Ziggler. And if Cena wins, he’ll be in the WWE Title match at TLC. That’s actually good psychology from Laurinaitis. He walked off as the two future opponents stared at each other.

-David Otunga was talking to someone off-camera. It was Kevin Nash, and he’ll face Triple H at TLC in a Ladder Match. Nash said he doesn’t do Ladder Matches. Otunga said a sledgehammer would hang above the ring, and the guy who gets it will be able to use it until there’s a winner. Otunga said Nash has a match tonight, but Nash seemed uninterested in that.

-Cole said this would be Nash’s first match on Raw in eight years.

-Ricardo Rodriguez introduced Alberto Del Rio. Del Rio’s match is next.

[Commercial Break]

(2) Alberto Del Rio vs. Daniel Bryan
Bryan had his ribs taped after the cage match last Tuesday. Del Rio went right after the ribs. Bryan with a few hope spots, but Del Rio hung Bryan out to dry on the top rope. Cross arm-breaker finished it.

Winner: Del Rio, at 1:46.

-An updated graphic was shown with Del Rio along with Miz and Punk.

-Alicia Fox, Eve Torres and Kelly Kelly were walking backstage. Their match is after the break.

[Commercial Break]

(3) Eve Torres & Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix & Natalya
A video on Nattie and Beth aired during their entrance, but it was interrupted by the mystery Youtube video, then it continued. The announcers did not address the interruption. Heels showed off their power. As Beth jawed with Eve, Kelly rolled her up for the win.

Winners: Kelly and Eve, at 1:10.

-They previewed John Cena vs. Zack Ryder using WWE ’12. The match is next, and the graphic helpfully tells us it’s a “Social Experiment.”

[Commercial Break]

(4) Zack Ryder vs. John Cena
They did some mat-work early, looking for crowd reactions. Crowd was certainly buzzing, but they didn’t sound solidly behind one or the other. Ziggler and Vickie were shown watching on a monitor backstage. Swinging neck-breaker got a near-fall for Ryder at 3:36. Lots of rest-holds. Tornado DDT for two at 4:57 for Ryder. Rough Ryder avoided and Cena hit his signature moves. Ryder got out of an AA and booted Cena in the corner. Ryder set up his finish, but Cena turned it into the AA for the win.

Winner: Cena, at 6:43.

Ryder complained to Cena after the match that it was his one shot at the US Title. He was quite upset, but Cena tried to cool him down, then he walked out of the ring and up the ramp.

-The TLC WWE Title match updated things with Cena’s image.

[Commercial Break]

-Slammy Superstar of the Year nominees: Mark henry, the Miz, John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio.

-John Cena walked in on a Johnny Ace-David Otunga confab and Cena was upset. Cena demanded Ryder get a US Title shot. Ace said he gave him a shot to beat Cena to fight for the title. Ace said Ryder has one more chance tonight…if Cena gives up his WWE Title match at TLC. Cena backed out and made an impassioned pro-Ryder speech.

-Cole and Lawler talked about the ramifications of the above decision. We’ll find out who Ryder faces to get a shot to challenge for the US Title, as the match is coming up next. This would be a good time to re-debut Brodus Clay, no?

[Commercial Break]

(5) Zack Ryder vs. Mark Henry – No DQ, No Count-Out Match
David Otunga gave instructions for the match type before they started. Henry had his ankle taped up, but dominated the first minute. At 1:40, Ryder connected on the running corner boot. As Henry shoved him away, Cena walked to the ring to cheer on Ryder. Cena then got into the ring and gave Henry the AA, put Ryder on top, and the pinfall was made.

Winner: Ryder, at 2:21.

-Vickie came out of the GM’s office. Ziggler asked if she got him to reverse the Ryder win. “What do I even pay you for?” he asked. She did find out Ziggler’s opponent: Sheamus. Jack Swagger assured Ziggler he’d be at ringside. The two men argued, but then shared a laugh. Ziggler and Vickie walked off and Swagger didn’t look happy.

-Nash was walking backstage. He makes his in-ring return next.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole and Lawler read reactions to the Ryder angle off their iPad.

(6) Kevin Nash vs. Santino Marella
Nash brought a sledgehammer with him to the ring. He set it on the announce table. Nash squashed Santino with his usual set of moves.

Winner: Nash, at 1:04.

Nash feigned using the sledgehammer on Marella after the match.

-CM Punk was talking t Evan Bourne backstage. Ziggler’s match is next.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole plugged Tribute to the Troops.

(7) Dolph Ziggler vs. Sheamus
Sheamus used his power, but Ziggler dropkicked him. Sheamus with ten forearm shots to Ziggler’s chest for only a count of two. Fameasser with Sheamus on his knees for a two-count. Ziggler backed out of a Celtic Cross when Ryder ran out. That distracted Ziggler and Sheamus hit the Brogue Kick for the win.

Winner: Sheamus, at 4:59.

Ziggler was on the receiving end of the Rough Ryder post-match.

-WWE Title match is now a Triple Threat, with Punk vs. Miz vs. Del Rio. Contract signing is coming up.

[Commercial Break]

-Alberto Del Rio (and Ricardo!) and The Miz were in the ring. Johnny Ace walked out. Ace said so many exciting things are happening on Raw, “like the introduction of Brodus Clay.” Ace announced Cena vs. Henry for next week. CM Punk was introduced. He said the contract signing is the biggest cliché in WWE, as the table and chairs were moved out of the way. Punk said there hasn’t been a peaceful contract signing since Wrestlemania III. Ace said that, for the first-time ever, the WWE Title would be defended in a Triple Threat TLC match. Punk didn’t seem to think it’d be a problem. Miz talked up his recent beatings. Punk insulted Miz’s appearance. When talking about what he did to John Morrison, Ace interrupted to wish Morrison the best in his future endeavors. He said he’s the most must-see WWE Champ of all-time. Punk said he’s only concerned with being the best in the world.

Del Rio said he’s the best in the world. He said he’s won everything in 2011, and he’ll end the year by becoming champion. Punk said if Del Rio says it’s his destiny, he’s going to start drinking. Miz said he and Del Rio aren’t friends but they can agree that no matter what happens, Punk won’t walk out as champion. Miz signed the contract. Del Rio did the same. And so did Punk. “Once I sign this, we can get to fighting, right?” Ace made the official announcement. He wished them all good luck as the fans chanted for a fight. He asked a WWE.com photographer to come in and take a picture of everyone. Punk was not having it. “Even your contract signings are boring!” Punk said if you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. He attacked Miz and Del Rio. Miz escaped, but Ricardo helped Del Rio. Miz came from behind and attacked Del Rio though, allowing Punk to hit the running knee. Bulldog through a table. GTS for Miz. Punk celebrated with the WWE Title as Ace looked on from the stage with...no real reaction.

A good show again. I thought that making Cena fight Ryder was a great idea, but I think they thought the fans would be a lot more against Cena than they were. Almost no boos. Once again proving that Ryder has his rabid chunk of fans, but the average fan sees him as just another guy.

Vince needs to decide if he wants to scrap PG or not. Cause if he keeps pushing PG while having Cena make jokes about Ziggler being a jerkoff, it will eventually bite him in the ass.

So Punk trashes the signing because it is predictable and then does the most predictable thing possible? Never thought I'd see the day where Cena's segments have more intrigue than Punk's.

And I'm pretty sure the mystery vid is Taker. Way to Apocalyptic for Jericho. Either that or the return of Mordecai.

Did Brodus Clay suffer an injury or fail a Wellness Test or something? Is there an actual reason for not debuting him or is WWE just terrible at planning?

If they can't find time to debut Brodus during next week's 3-hour Raw, then they might as well not even bother debuting him at all.

Cena giving up his title shot because he's had multiple chances and selflessly wanted to give Ryder just one chance may be his biggest babyface act ever. Had they just left it there, it would have been perfect. Then they had to go overboard by bringing in Mark Henry and overbooking all to hell.

Oh, and if Cena beats Henry next week, after the entire roster went out of their way to eat pins to build him up to the monster he is now (even Orton...TWICE!), then he naturally takes all the goodwill from this week and shits all over it.

Memo to the E: Having Johnny Ace acknowledge that people think he's dull as dishwater, doesn't make him any less dull.

I think the plan was for Cena to come out to notch up his consternation with the booing, only he really didn't get it from Tampa. It's like he telegraphed that he wanted to get louder boos, and the crowd was having none of it.

And you thought they screwed up Punk's push over the summer? Well that was nothing compared to what they did to Ryder in one night. First they have Ryder tell the GM that the fans are clamoring for him to get a match against Ziggler. The evil GM then says that getting 24,000 signatures on a petition is no reason to get a US championship match. Then they have the announcer reinforce the (logical) point. Then they give Ryder his chance to get his big shot, but he has to beat Cena. He gets no reaction when he comes out, the crowd is stone dead. He loses the match. He then whines to Cena that "that was my shot, bro!".

Then instead of Ryder working his way into getting another chance, Cena gives up his title shot to get Ryder a match he doesn't appear to deserve. Then Cena interferes in a match Ryder is losing and hands him the victory.

Yay, Ryder?

(So Cena is going to face Mark Henry in a grudge match at TLC now, is that the plan?)

Edit: I have to give Laurinaitis credit, I think he's at least finding a groove as the stooge who thinks he's ten times the sh-t he actually is. Him chiming in to wish Morrison the best worked for me.

Only saw the Orton-Miz match and Orton came off looking like an idiot running after Barrett and getting counted out Miz didn't come out of the match looking strong. It really didn't do a thing for him.

Another disconcertingly normal Raw. A streak which will end with the Slammys, but those have the potential to go either way in quality. Punk takes Superstar of the Year because he was such a Controversial Figure in the WWE Universe, right?

Nash/HHH in a ladder match isn't really that funny because they're not really going to do one, they'll just work the same brawly match with bonus ladder hitting. But it's pretty funny.

Ziggler ruled in the opening chat.

Masked Kane is a yay; it's the last interesting thing left for him to do I know he's been growing out the hair but it's only been four months so it's not exactly to Kane length. Shirtless bald Kane in a mask will be a weird hybrid look. But I'm pretty sure the bottom line is both their masked guys are out for ages so they need someone new to sell masks for Christmas.

The average fan has caught on to Ryder since he started his TV push, especially as it's cranked up post-Survivor Series. The Woo Woo Woo gets the biggest crowd participation this side of You Can't See Me.

Nah Mark Henry is wrestling Big Show at TLC. (He probably should've been the one who knocked out Henry, if this wasn't the show about John Cena being Mother Teresa.) Henry/Cena is next week on Raw. I dunno what Cena's going to do at the PPV now. Hang out maybe.

If Clay was being held off, you'd think they'd at least keep up the intro promos for him or something. After three weeks, fans will forget this guy existed.

I see the Ryder fans out there, but they sure don't make much noise when he makes his entrance. It's almost like it is better to want to see Ryder than it is to actually get him.

And Kevin Nash just needs to stop changing his look every week. He's like Michael Jakson with the plastic surgery and is only making it worse week to week. He would have been better off keeping the TNA silver haired look at least hhe looked like a person.

Weird show. Not as good as the last two, but Punk is being booked like an A1 top star and Cena's finally doing something interesting, so I'll let the questionable booking elsewhere slide for tonight.

I remember way back in July that Zack Ryder was put on Smackdown by Triple H and made Teddy Long's assistant. I do not remember them moving him back to RAW. Why couldn't Teddy Long give Ryder his shot at Dolph Ziggler?

Kevin Nash is now one step closer to a world title shot then he deserves to be.

How can John Cena be a heel if he is sacrificing his title shot for Ryder?

There was way too much Ryder on this show.

They already built up Ryder as capable of beating Ziggler and deserving the US Title shot. The crowd wasn't into the bullshit of having to wrestle Cena and Henry - Ryder is midcard and isn't in a position to believably beat two main eventers. But people have been waiting to see Ryder ascend to the US Title against Ziggler. People didn't respond to making him jump through hoops to get something as remedial as a US Title match, but they did pop when he got his hands on Ziggler. People are interested in Ryder vs. Ziggler, not the garbage they keep heaping on Ryder to "deserve" the match he already deserves.

Still, having said that:

Brodus will win the Slammy for Best Debut.

Kelly Kelly wrestled a better match than Kevin Nash did. A funnier match too, since the Nash match was frightening. Poor Santino. Was it the first time Nash has wrestled on RAW in 8 years or the first time Nash has wrestled in 8 years? The former, but you could have fooled me.

I totally popped for Johnny Ace wishing John Morrison the best in his future endeavors. #WWWYKI

As bad as they did Ryder, I thought Bryan was actually worse. Ryder looked like he could compete against Cena which credit for John making that a good match. Bryan looked like a glorified jobber and Cole's announcing is not doing him any favors. Speaking of Cole, he sounded pissed when Cena brought up Cole force feeding the tweets.

Either way, I am not sure what they are trying to do with Cena, like they want to tease the heel thing then they pull the Cena helping Ryder. It would have been better for Cena not to remove his title shot.If he was willing to give it up, why not just let Ryder pin him or eat the Rough Ryder. They want to pick their cake, eat it and fuck the girl that comes out of the cake.

As for Ryder's pops, we were in Tampa Bay. These bastards don't show up for anything even when their teams are making post season runs. I throw it in the place that we are in category for the low response to Ryder. Hopefully, they are in a better town next week for 3 hours.

CM Punk: "If you say "it is my destiny"- Sweet Jesus, I think I might just have to start drinking"

I was laughing out loud so hard at this. This guy deserves to be on top now. He's awesome. I love how he comments on the lameness of things going on as they are happening around him.

I personally hate the lazy device of an in-ring contract signing, so I love hearing him rip it to shreds.

The key to keeping this character good is to keep him far away from HHH and Kevin Nash.

We all know they wouldn't do that because Cena needs to be invincible. He cannot lose in any way to a lowly midcarder.

But if you want to explain it in-character...
Cena will want to win the match. He is a competitor.
Yet once he saw Zack's infinite sadness, he rose above the hate, the competition and above all of us by handing him that chance.

Given that it looked, briefly, like they were going to do some kind of insane Ryder heel turn, I guess what they ended up doing was OK, though it made Ryder look like a punk.

It really comes down to what they do with Cena/Henry next week, and what they're planning on doing with Cena at the PPV. Henry needs to get something back from him in a big way, since the whole thing came off making Henry's title seems less important than Ziggler's, and Henry going down to a single Attitude Adjustment - even given the "still hurting from the last few weeks" out - was a major disappointment. Also kinda odd that they gave away the visual of Cena hitting the AA on Henry so easily (and holy shit, Cena is a strong, strong guy) instead of trying to build next week's match around the question of whether Brock Lesnar Can F5 The Big Show John Cena Can AA Mark Henry.

Since the end-of-night plans involved neither Cena in the title match at the PPV nor Cena vs. Henry at the PPV but did involve Ryder vs. Ziggler, it seems odd that they didn't go with Ryder beating Cena in a fluke and reversing the Cena/Ryder angry face-off to tease Heel Cena some more before having him Rise Above The Hate. A slowburn of Ryder ascending at Cena's expense feels like a more logical continuation of the direction they've been mapping out.

Also, Titus O'Neill should have been Ryder's 2nd opponent with the stipulation being Ryder's Title Shot vs. O'Neil's Dog Bark. And Brodus Clay should debut as the host of the Slammy Awards Show and do Dennis Miller's previous Slammy monolgues verbatim.

I leave those last two paragraphs in until CRZ meets my The W 10th Anniversary Wish demand of a personal fantasy-booking subthread that none of the rest of you are allowed to use without my approval.
