My theory is that no matter what leeway Punk has for his mic work, he has nowhere near that much say in the booking. He's trying to work his gimmick and maintain that Summer of Punk heat, but he's talking in 2012 amid 1998 booking.

He's Lisa Simpson freestyling on the sax and spinning out the door in Dewey Largo's music class.

In Truth's absence, I think a Punk/Miz program could work. Two young guys who adore the business and can talk/sell/hit signature moves? That has potential.

Punk/Miz would be a great place holder until Punk can move on to a worthy Mania opponent. Not sure who that could be, but Jericho would be ideal. Speaking of Miz, surely they knew about Truth the night before, so why doesn't he do the job instead of Miz??

My theory. (The W) The honors were given to Miz, who probably took it as an honor. Pro wrestling is a funny business.

Personally, I think Miz is a worthy 'Mania opponent ... a lengthy program between those two guys could be something special.

Particularly if Ziggler is held in place with the US Title for four months of ck-teasing to defend against Ryder in Miami, you wonder what heel on Raw would match up with Punk. With Cena already busy with Rock, there's only so many spots on the card to bring back guys before you run out of spots to give the up-and-comers their own WM moments (opportunities). Assuming there's no HHH heel turn coming, I think it's got to be Del Rio, Miz, Swagger, Ziggler, or someone from outside, right?

(I'm assuming that the plan is for Punk to defend or challenge for the WWE title, while Rock/Cena is left to sell itself as a grudge match. A non-title match would be less epic, and not need so much effort to build a program around.)

Miz would have the whole "I won the main event at last year's WM" angle going for him. You figure to get good-to-great promos, and good ring work. I could see it, given that Rock/Cena is indisputably the "main event".

I like Del Rio's work, but the feud feels like it's been played for months already, and not with an eye to build to a crescendo at WM. I don't think it would feel 'special' enough.

Swagger? You'd really be starting from scratch, and where Ziggler has momentum, Swagger has been trying to get into the Vickie family, to no particular end so far.

Ziggler would be the fresh feud, and last night was a tasty appetizer if he gets the program. It would also be rewarding someone who really has stood out in developing his talent over the past year.

I'd take Ziggler if given the choice. While Miz isn't a bad pick, it will take some doing to build him back to a serious contender for a WWE Title match at WrestleMania. I suppose it would be consistent with current storylines for Johnny Ace to choose someone as his "corporate-endorsed guy", steal the title from Punk, and make him chase to get a shot at WrestleMania. Miz would fit that heel role like a glove.

Quick thoughts:

Wade Barrett has no charisma. No, stop. He just doesn't. An accent is not charisma. I didn't bother with the match because it is so obvious when Kofi comes out that he'll be jobbing there is no intrigue to any of his matches anymore.

Cena could have done the same promo about Truth and Miz not liking each other without pointing out no one took them seriously as a threat. Has to be frustrating when you're booked like shit and then are made fun of for being booked like shit like it was your fault.

I can't believe there's never been a wrestler named "Greco Roman". That's got nothing to do with RAW. It just hit me the other day during breakfast.

Ziggs and Punk had a good match. I don't think their styles are necessarily custom made for each other, but they seemed to find a good groove.

Sin Cara and Rey out means Kane gets his mask. WWE must have at least one masked wrestler on the show at a time. I wonder what Aguila is up to these days?

Cody Rhodes, with that belt design, is the first legit (in my mind) IC Champion since the Rock (who if memory serves was the last Champ with that design). Not sure why I feel this way. I have mentally edited out all Champions during that "other belt" period. It's like they didn't count or something! They may as well all be Chris Benoit.

Big Show hasn't done a promo in a long time, and it's obvious why. Um, Henry was trying to refuse medical attention. Yes he was carted out but the point was sort of what a badass he is. I really hope they give Henry the decisive victory he deserves at TLC

Nash was slurring his speech. After a good promo in Mexico, he's back to sucking. Him and Triple H against Rock and Cena? Yikes.

Punk's promo was good, but the authority figure character needs to go. Bring back Jack Tunney. He could appear in CGI form from WWE studios in Stamford!

Call someone up from Florida & name them Greco Roman, then sign Colt Cabana to do his "Matt Classic" gimmick, and team them up. That would also fix their "no masked wrestlers" problem.

I think Miz would be fine, but he needs some major character repair, ASAP. He has really fallen far since beating Cena, and the build to SS made him look like an afterthought. I like the guy, and think it could be very good, but first things first.

He's bringing back the Nitro Girls!!

I wouldn't really expect a big mysterious tease like this even if Jericho was coming back - I don't see where he'd fit on the card as a face right now, and why get the fans all jazzed up for the oh-so-serious character he left as? Even as a top-line heel, the prospect of Jericho coming back is certainly not as ominous as a masked Kane return could be.

The second coming didn't really click off the bat, he just doesn't seem the type who would go to the well a third time with the intriguing teaser video concept. I certainly don't know one way or the other, but this sounds more like the kind of rumor the front office puts in someone's ear to find out if they're the mole.

The problem with Miz is that he's never been able to get over on his own... He always needs a sidekick (Morrison, R-Turth, Alex Riley, Big Show etc). I just dcn't know what they can really do with Miz now that will make him come across as a credible threat to the top tier.

I think Monday's Raw was another mess with a massive rewrite of the script right before the show. The guest host didn't come on the show, but I think that was a plus considering it a star that most people don't know. If anything with the guest host, they need to stick with only A-level talent.

And poor Brodus, and this time, I don't think he even got a promo video in.. But who really wants to see the vanilla version of Big Daddy V?????? I don't see having Brodus having a shot of being over on Raw or Smackdown.

Jericho has done the 'mysterious entry promo' thing twice, so it's fair to assume they'd do it for his lastest comeback. Also, Jericho isn't going to spill the beans on Twitter this early in the game.

Jericho has said in interviews that the only way he'd be interested in returning is if he could reinvent his character in a way that would make it fun for him. The first time he was Y2J, the second run he morphed into the suit-wearing serious heel, so who knows what the third incarnation will be. If it is Jericho, that goth-style promo would certainly indicate a big change in character, and maybe a hint that he's taking a run at Undertaker at WM.

It may not be Jericho. Today's Wrestling Observer has a section on why Jericho has not signed with the company:

The two key problems in the negotiations were that Jericho was looking for a part-time deal that would allow him to do outside entertainment projects without the company having veto power over them, and if he was to get the projects himself, he didn’t want to cut the company in a percentage of those outside deals. Vince McMahon claimed that it was the company that made him a star and should be entitled to a cut, like they get from all wrestlers, and they also insist on being able to control what outside projects talent does.

[some stuff about NBC/Universal not wanting 'their wrestlers' on other channels clipped]

While this was going down, what drove the chasm wider is that Jericho was not put in the WWE 12 video game as a character while other former characters like Randy Savage, Batista, Shawn Michaels and Brock Lesnar are in. Jericho took being left out of the game as a personal insult and felt he was greatly disrespected.

Dave goes on to explain Lesnar & Savage's family signed to the game thru the game company, while Michaels and Batista signed WWE merchandising deals. Jericho was offered the same merchandising deal, but he would've had to give WWE a cut of his outside deals, believes Batista and Michaels do not and wants THAT deal. THQ would've probably done their own deal with Jericho, but were expected Jericho and WWE to take care of it and it fell thru the cracks.

After all that...

some in WWE are still of the impression he’s coming in for a Mania season short run and have not been told differently. The wrestlers are under the impression that he’s not coming in.

If this changes and he does decide to come in, I don’t expect anything to come out because Jericho had already stated his feelings that if he were to return that he wouldn’t want anyone to know ahead of time and for it to be a surprise.

so this is less than definite, though the teaser video bit runs counter to a Jericho surprise return.

Agreed, and I thought they were willing to do that. I also thought Takayam would hold the title a bit longer, and maybe drop it on the 1/04 show, possibly to Tenzan there.
