From www.wrestlingexposed.com

"The 12/9 edition of Raw scored a 3.3 cable rating with a 4.9 share according to Nielsen Media Research. That is the same number that the showscored last week. The show did hours of 3.1 and 3.5."

They posted it as a bad news story but you can at least take some positives from this. Ratings have pretty much held firm since the post Survivor Series jump so they may slowly be steadying the ship. On top of that there was a reasonable jump in ratings suggesting that people were interested in the main event feud that was being set up, probably thanks in no small part to Flair's promo if reaction here is anything to go by.

This happens each month, though. It goes higher then sinks lower. Next week it'll go up to a 3.5 then level off at a 3.1. They've dropped around a full 1.0 ratings point since Austin left, that's not a good sign at all, IMO.

It is interesting that the second hour did so much better than the first. But how does this get spun? Do HHH and HBK deserve the credit because we all knew that they would get into it sometime before the end of the night? Does Flair get the credit since it was his promo that got people excited about the HHH/HBK match (it got the crowd going)? Do the four tag teams deserve the credit since the main event match featured all the teams?

I only have one answer so far:

VICTORIA=RATINGS!

I have to agree here. The ratings will spike again on Monday because of the curiosity factor, but my belief is, since Armageddon is not one of the big PPV's, the ratings will drop back to 3.1 by the end of the year.

I said Flair got the credit cos everyone seemed to love his promo and I also didnt want to be responsible for a HHH thread.

Or maybe we should thank the Bears for sucking so very badly on MNF

How many people here have actually gotten a call from a friend telling them to switch to Raw (or any wrestling show) when you weren't initially watching it? How many people have actually enjoyed the first hour of the show so much that you've called your friends to tell them to watch the second hour? I've never understood why people think the contents of a particular hour were actually what caused ratings to go up. Granted, if ratings drop in the 2nd hour, people were most likely so tired of the first hour that they didn't want to watch anymore, but how many people that only watch the 2nd hour are doing so because of something happened to suddenly interest them in the show? And how many do you think just happened to notice that wrestling was on while they were flipping channels and ended up watching that? I'll grant that bad Monday Night Football games can certainly contribute to a higher 2nd hour but that still doesn't show any evidence that the content of a particular show will actually affect it's 2nd hour ratings.

TorchSlasher is right, though. Victoria (and her identical twin brother Lance Storm) definitely = ratings. They're my main reason for watching Raw.

Its cause people are tuning in all the time through the wonderful art of channel hopping. If they like what they see they might get drawn into watching the program, hence the first hour affects the second hour.

It generally accepted as near disaster if the second hour isn't higher than the first for this reason.

It's at least good to see they're steadying the ship, but it still brings a tear to my eye when I look back on the past year in this kooky company I have invested my 20 years on earth into. I sat through slumps before, but this is the Dalai Lama of slumps.

That's not exactly a risky prediction, seeing as there are three shows left this year and two are in immediate proximity to Christmas and New Year. Holidays are always exempt from regular ratings arguments.

I have. It is more like I am at home watching something, and a friend of mine normally knows I like it. If something damned cool happens (nothing lately seems to have warranted a call), and he HAS to talk about it right away (holy shit, did you see that?!?!!?) and I am not watching it... you get "turn it on! You are missing it!!!!"

Yeah, that's happened to me before. And I've called someone else and been on the other end before, too.

See, this is something I don't always agree with, its more of a self fulfilling prophesy than anything else. Go back to July 4th. Everyone said bad ratings would occur, which did happen. However, going back to the territorial days, that would be one of the nights where a company would pop 40,000 in the Orange Bowl. Then Thanksgiving, bad ratings will occur, bad ratings will happen. However, Starrcade was born on Thanksgiving. Survivor Series was born on Thanksgiving. Big card used to happen on Thanksgiving in World Class. If there ever was a night where there should be a ratings jump, Thanksgiving should, by the nature of the business, be that night. Now, X-Mas week, I understand the ratings drop. However, New Years week I will definately not accept as a ratings drop excuse. The highest numbers ECW pulled on TNN were on X-Mas and New Years Eve for Tanaka/Awesome, and on the same night as Tanaka/Awesome Vince had USA put on a year in review show for 1999. Also, going back further, didn't Nitro pull a nice number on New Year's '96 against the RAW Bowl when they had Flair defend the World Title against Hogan?

I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

I've always thought 2nd hour ratings bump is a useful tool to see if what you have in your main event is working or not. I think you will always have 0.3 people coming in late, they are hardcore fans who just for one reason or another (ie work) come to the show late, it was a consistent at least 0.3 second hour bump from the late 90's to early 2002. Sometimes the 2nd hour rating shoots up to 0.5-0.7 sometimes higher which means a lot of people must have tuning in for the sole purpose of seeing the main event guys. So if the ratings 2nd hour jump is 0.2 or under, that's cause for concern, even if it did jump 0.1 or 0.2, if you take into consideration the consistent 0.3 people coming in late that means people tuned out in the middle of the show. And if the 2nd hour ratings is even or under its a telling sign that whatever you have in the main event people dont want to see. Which is happening alot in 4 months

This weeks 0.4 2nd hour jump was the highest 2nd hour bump since August 5th (3.4-3.9). That is 4 months ago! Who do I give credit to? I want to give credit to the 6 people that were on my screen from 10:40 to 11PM est. I want to give credit to a pretty hot women feud with 2 amazing girls and the elevation of the tag titles by champions who made these titles important. It's not like they were hiding the main event. They did 2 backstage skits about it (trish/y2j, Team Christ(tain)/ Victoria). They pimped it multiple times with graphics saying 6 person match coming up for your main event... I'm guessing HHH will get credit even though in the last 4 months he hasn't ever hit a 0.4 2nd hour jump like the 6 people IN THE RING did.

As for the big after PPV rating jump. I wouldn't hold my breath knowing who's favored in the main event. On the RAw after Survivor Series there was a huge overall jump when HHH lost (+0.6). But when H beat Kane at No Mercy the RAw after dropped (-0.1) from the previous week. The Raw after Unforgiven when H beat RVD raised only (0.2). And Raw after SummerSlam the rating dropped (-0.1) from the previous week.

Yes I do love studying the art of ratings LOL

The single-biggest key when looking at the ratings is to compare highs to previous highs and lows to previous lows. It goes in waves. In this downtrend, the lows have been lower than previous lows, and the highs have been lower than previous highs. If that trend reverses, that's when to get excited.

What sucks is that a certain somebody (**cough**HHH**cough**) is going to use the fact that ratings jumped .4 in the second hour to justify his push and his hogging every segment.

Look for the Triple H show to roll on next week with no end in sight.

Who? If anything, it will probably lead to either Rey just retiring or Rey doing one last run probably from SummerSlam to Mania then calling it a career. I wonder if he was considered a two time abuser after the Mexican Prescriptions from a few years ago....
