Would someone please take the World Title off of Chris Benoit and give it back to either Shawn Michaels or HHH. I had high hopes for Benoit as Champ but those hopes are now completely gone. After watching the May 25th edition of RAW I've given up my faith, not in Chris Benoit, but in his World Title push. We are but a few weeks away from Bad Blood a RAW exclusive PPV and the RAW World Champ, Chris Benoit, has no angle, and no direction.
At Bad Blood Benoit will be simply defending the title against the #1 Contender, a guy who won a Battle Royal of all things to earn this spot. To make it worse the guy who won the match, Kane, isn't even the guy who deserves the spot because he didn't even win on his own accord, he was just the guy who happened to be left in the ring when the "far more important" guy HHH was eliminated by someone who wasn't even in the match, HBK. By all intents and purposes he was a fluke winner who didn't really "earn" the title shot.
Now on to May 25th we go and Benoit again has absolutely no purpose on Raw. HHH and HBK have a huge angle running through the entire show and are being treated as the most important aspect of the show, while the World Champ is shown standing in the locker room, in his tights, with his belts over his shoulders, for no reason or purpose but to perhaps remind us that WWE is pretending to push Chris Benoit. Merely weeks away from Bad Blood and Benoit has no purpose on the show. He had no promo scheduled and no match either, yet for some reason he is standing around in his tights all night with his title belts on his shoulders. How many times have we seen guys arriving at RAW 30 or even 60 minutes into the show in street clothes, yet with no match scheduled Benoit is standing around in his tights like a jobber waiting for a stand-by match. Okay yes I hear you all yelling he wrestled in the main event with Eugene. Yes he did but that was a "last minute substitution" when Regal wasn't cleared to wrestle. If not for Benoit's "last minute decision" to take his place he wouldn't have appeared on the show at all. If not for that I guess our World Champ would have just taken off his gear, that he didn't do anything in, put his belts away and go home. Unless we are to believe he sits around at home (in Atlanta of all places) like that as well, just in case his wife books him in a last minute match with the neighbourhood dog. It's not like he has anything pressing at RAW to get to. How can a man hold 2 Title belts and not get a match or an angle on RAW?
The World Champ has to be the main focus of the show. It is after all what all of these guys are suppose to be fighting for. If HHH and HBK are still going to be the main focus of RAW you might just as well leave the belt with them. Pretending to push Benoit and having him the red headed stepchild World Champ (and Tag Champ) is just disrespectful to him and insulting to us as fans. I'm not saying the HHH and HBK angle is bad it's just that it should be secondary to what ever the World Champ is doing. If the WWE creative team can't come up with more than one good angle perhaps they are not what their name leads us to believe they are and they should be either renamed or REPLACED.

The reason the HHH/HBK HitC match has more heat is because
the WWE made it look like HBK should be Champ but HHH screwed him out of it(at RAW:Showdown in the desert)and HHH look like he should be No.1 contender but HBK screwed him out of(at the battle royal).

This is very similar to the angle used in the First HitC match. Where HBK and Taker Main evented and Bret was facing a midcarder(the Patriot) for the title.

"Sorry, I either left the Magical Fanboy World Title Changer Continuom Transfunctioner in my other jeans or it was oldschoolhero's week to have it, which considering it had to go overseas and through customs, God KNOWS when it's gonna get there."

I'm on it. But not before we get World Champion Eric Bana.

I, too, find myself yearning for the Benoit triumphs of days gone by. Compared to the hazy glories of last year's A-Train feud and Backlash 2003: Where's Chris?, he's really getting hosed.

"WWE is pretending to push Chris Benoit."

If putting the guy over clean in the biggest ME of the year-and the self-promoted biggest PPV of all-time-and THEN doing exactly the same a month later in his hometown is "pretending", I'd love to see the first-time World Title push that went full-tilt boogie.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

The main reason for RAW existing this week was to establish the Hell in a Cell match. So, Benoit had one week where he wasn't the featured champion around whom the show must revolve. So, Benoit's match with Kane won't have tons of backstory and will probably live under the shadow of the Hell in the Cell match. This doesn't mean WWE has given up on Benoit or are 'pretending to push' him. It just means that there is a very marketable match which is going to be made the focus of Bad Blood. Why waste a potentially awesome World Title feud with an opponent with whom Benoit has significant backstory on a show where another match will clearly be the main event? That'swhy Benoit has Kane to defend against at Bad Blood. He's a placeholder challenger, to be used until Benoit can once again be established as the main event after HBK and/or HHH are presumably out for a while after their match. No big deal, its just smart business sense, don't needlessly waste now what could make you money later on.

You'll get your wish soon enough...when HHH beats HBK, HHH will whine and become #1 contender, and then the title will be off of Benoit at Summerslam...so your wish is granted...

My faith in the IWC has hit a new low. Benoit's into his third month of a world title push that has seen him make both HHH and HBK tap out clean on PPV and be in most Raw main events since WrestleMania and people STILL find room to bitch?!

For what it's worth, Benoit's non-involvement week still had him in the last match of the show that was part of a very popular angle. The days when working with Eugene was beneath certain workers came to a screeching halt when The Rock of all people showed up last week and put him over for fifteen minutes. Besides that, is it not more compliment than punishment that they see Benoit as now able to give the other guy the rub instead of still needing it himself?

Just remember you asked for this when Benoit drops the title to Hunter; you know it's coming.

This is a pretty good point, and I've isolated it in case people decided not to bother trying to get through your text - may I suggest more line and paragraph breaks?

I expect an internal logic in the WWE Universe, and things like this REALLY annoy me. Would it have REALLY been so hard to establish a REASON that Benoit was there prior to him showing up to back up Eugene? When it happened on the show, I also said "geez, what would he have done on this show if that spot hadn't opened up?" The nagging thing is it would have taken all of one backstage shot (Bischoff: "...so I've decided you're NOT wrestling tonight!" Crowd: "BOOOOOO") and/or five seconds of commentary to resolve the inconsistency (JR: "My God, King - he was only scheduled for an in-ring interview in our final segment!")

This ranks right up there with the "magic" cameras that allow us the viewers to see, for example, Kane appearing in Lita's dressing room while somehow Matt Hardy never finds out (as if he wouldn't tape or TiVo the show for later viewing!)

I totally agree with the internal logic point, Z.

Onto the other topic, why HHH/HBK was pushed like crazy: Buyrates. Benoit fans will buy Bad Blood to see Benoit defend the title, just like Benoit fans will watch RAW every week to watch Benoit. The last two PPVs did good-to-okayish numbers based on pushing the top three stars on RAW: Benoit, HHH & Shawn Michaels. Why risk having a lower buyrate by NOT hard-selling HHH/HBK in a Cell?

While I admit that I'd love to see them tying things together in a more intelligent way (unless we're supposed to believe that Chris Benoit wears his tights all day) a change in the World Title picture is a good thing. Benoit's beaten both HBK and HHH, we've seen them wrestle over and over and over again, so if they want to do Good Friends, Better Enemies 2 (Electric Boogaloo) and free Benoit up to defend the belt against all comers for a while, cool.

Bring back the fighting champion. Make it seem like ALL the guys are working toward the number one contender slot, instead of it being a foregone conclusion thanks to this or that feud. And when HHH/HBK are going at it, everyone who hates them can go get snacks.

But Benoit, bring some pants and a shirt to the shows. Please. The only other guys I've seen hanging around in their tights all day long are Kane and Eugene, and neither one of them are right in the head. Think of your image! :)

Normally I would agree with what you said, and I agree with the part about the magic cameras and everything, but considering the internal logic of the show was the Bischoff was losing control of the show due to the HBK/HHH chaos, perhaps one if they were being generous to WWE could say that Benoit was perhaps scheduled to wrestle or do something which was totally thrown off because of the madness caused by the stuff going on, so he decided to go out and kick someone's ass, even if it meant going into the Eugene match. I agree it's not the best of theories, but it does at least give a certain internal logic to the show, stretched somewhat as it may be.

My problem with that kind of thing is that when the viewer has to start making up storylines COMPLETELY out of nowhere to explain what's going on, then the writers aren't doing their job. We're supposed to watch, and if there's forshadowing, then great. But when you have to stretch your imagination to even remember that Benoit is on the damn roster, let alone the champ, there's problems.

I was actually thinking the exact same thing as the guy who started this thread. Benoit is supposed to be the champ, yet he's getting less airtime (and less storyline time) than Spike Dudley. Yes, he's won two big matches cleanly. But unfortunately this is North America and not Japan. That means that 90% of the viewing audience doesn't care who won the match 2 days after it's over. It's the storylines and exposure that people care about.

Ever since Benoit got the belt(s) they've just had him kinda sitting there holding them (I think just so we shut up about "When will Triple H lose his title") while Triple H has *still* never stopped being the centerpiece of each and every friggin' show! Here's something about Benoit's Big Win #2 against Shawn Michaels that no one has pointed out yet: It was NEVER about Michaels wanting to beat Benoit to become champion. Michaels looked Benoit straight in the eye and said something like "That's Triple H's title you're wearing, and the best way to hurt him is for me to win his title" to get the feud going. That one line completely undermines Benoit's credibility, and since most fans don't watch RAW with Benoit-colored glasses on, they then look at him as a lame duck who's just keeping Triple H's title warm for him.

That's a fair and just point there, but it's one of those things that the fed does all the frickin' time (why are HALF the roster there when Bisch is constantly making matches on the fly? Hell, do they even bother putting a show together before airtime, or do they just hope that some guys get into a scuffle so an impromptu bout can be set?). Betrayals of internal logic piss me off no end too-especially when it comes to remembering past feuds/alliances, but that's another matter-but seeing as pretty much everyone falls prey to this particular snafu now and again I don't see it as shabby treatment of Benoit. It's just poor planning by the men with the pen more than anything else. Although that does not, of course, excuse it.

"Yes, he's won two big matches cleanly. But unfortunately this is North America and not Japan. That means that 90% of the viewing audience doesn't care who won the match 2 days after it's over."

"It was NEVER about Michaels wanting to beat Benoit to become champion. That one line completely undermines Benoit's credibility"

So....people don't care about two thirty minute matches, but will surely recall Michaels' one throwaway line of reasoning for going after Benoit? Riiiight. And don't you think you're being kind of patronising to the audience-at-large by saying such things? I mean, they sure seem to remember Benoit being put over huge when they pop like crazy for him each week.

"since most fans don't watch RAW with Benoit-colored glasses on, they then look at him as a lame duck who's just keeping Triple H's title warm for him."

If this were the case, most folks would be watchng Raw with conspiracy-colored specs on. Are fans not cheering their guts out for the man when he appears? Lord, the one totally HHH-centric show in over two months and the sky's caving in. How's about we look to the past a wee bit? Hunter, self-booking God that he is, spent the first two months of holding the newly-minted world title defending against RVD (defeated him in a tag match) and Kane (won the IC title) in matches that only made the midcard of the PPVs they featured on. Was he being treated poorly? Was there really any sense behind those title defences? It's the same basic principle-Benoit's going to face Kane, beat him decisively, and come out looking better than before, just like Hunter did with those two opponents. How in the Hell is he being disrespected or hurt credibility-wise by ANY of this? Oh yeah, because Hunter's the guy getting the majority of the camera-time. I mean, it doesn't MATTER that Benoit's already got the better of him twice in a row with no comeuppance, he's getting the camera-time, so he's burying Chris all over again.

Can we stop shifting the goalposts, please? It goes from "Hunter's just GOTSTA put him over" (which he did) to "They've just GOTSTA follow up good" (which they did) to "Benoit's just GOTSTA be made the focus of EVERY show" (which, for one or two weeks, they didn't). They've got a match which will deliver both critically and commercially for their next show. Why waste a huge build-up potential draw World Title match when it's only going to act as icing on the cake? Benoit will be kept on the boil with a nice tap-out win over a monster, and I daresay he and Kane will have some altercations in the two remaining weeks between now and the show. You know when everyone was saying how sometimes we should just sit back and enjoy? Well now's the frickin' time. Benoit's champ-and will be for a good while-there's gonna be a kick-ass Cell match in two weeks' time, and Raw's been the most consistently entertaining since forever.

I'm pretty sure that booking's been used in a bunch of battle royals before, hasn't it? Specific examples escape me, though...

I don't recall HHH vs HBK really drawing much of anything on PPV in the two years this feud has been going on. And, even if it was a draw two years ago, the repeated showings of this match must play into the rule of diminishing returns. And this match has headlined every RAW PPV for the last 6 months, with Benoit occasionally thrown in there.

WMXX drew a huge buyrate, but I find it really hard to believe HHH/HBK/Benoit drew more than a straight HHH vs Benoit match would have. The name "WrestleMania XX in Madison Square Garden: Where It All Begins Again" must have played a huge factor in that buyrate, as well. There is nothing out there to indicate that HHH vs HBK should be favored over every other potential match WWE has on the horizon.

HHH and HBK did a great job putting Benoit over at WrestleMania and Backlash, but part of putting someone over is stepping back and seeing if he can swim. Benoit has not had his opportunity to show that yet, and it's disheartening to see HHH vs HBK take center stage when Benoit could have gone on to a singles feud with HHH or HBK, then moved on to someone new who was built up in the interim.

With but a few sentences, I am reminded yet again why the world isn't right without Chris doing recaps.
As far as Benoit: At this point, we should all accept that the world will revolve around Trip until he either dies or gets a divorce. In other words, he is a Von Erich in World Class. Thus, the question involving Benoit is whether he is better off being the champ on a show that appears to be improving, while he is not in the key spot though champ, or whether he would be better in Guerrero's spot of being the champ that is the primary focus of a show that is spinning its wheels in the mud. If Benoit survives Badd Blood as champ, he'll be a world champion for a longer period of time in his career than Steamboat, Dusty or Cactus. Now, if Benoit defeats Kane at Badd Blood, and either Michaels or Trip come out before the Hell In The Cell to defeat Benoit in a improntu title match, than we should break out the pitchforks and torches. Until then, enjoy that Benoit gets what's viewed as a gimmee PPV World Title defense.

Considering Yogi Bear doesn't wake up until noon, yet gets every picnic basket that is in Jellystone Park, wouldn't it behoove Ranger Smith to advise those entering the park to consume the contents of said picnic baskets before noon?

I do agree with the point of Benoit has nothing to do, but its not like there is a logical foes for him after HHH and HBK. He has been fueding with them for three months now and there is no other heel on the radar. Jericho gave a hint he wanted a shot, but they are waisting him with Tyson/Trish/Christian. The writers have done a horrible job with building heels once Evolution took over again in December. They need to turn Edge or Shelton or someone soon, because for once there are too many faces on Raw.

Kane should be the next big thing for Benoit to fight, but he is involved in another storyline with the Matt/Lita. Also, Kane has been diminished since he lost the match at Armaggedon against Goldberg and HHH. If he won that night and then lost to Taker at Wrestlemania, I could buy him as a threat. Since his lost at Armaggedon, he has not won a major since Survivor Series if you even count Shane as a threat. I like the idea of Kane/Benoit, but there needs to be heat there.

I agree in part what the original poster said, maybe not to the degree but the last two weeks HHH & HBK really dragged the show down including the world title picture.

Kane not getting the final elimination in the Battle Royal just makes him look weak and the World title secondary. If HBK & HHH have a loving desire to be partnered up so much that even Lita and Matt thinks "Dude's some professionalism please". You could have HBK run out during the Final 5 & throw HHH out there and still keep the integrity for who ever wins the Battle Royal... Of course if that was the case we couldn't have the show end as it did with J.R saying "kane is the #1 contender, AND BUH GAWD HBK, HHH THE HATRED, HBK GOT HIS REVENGE ON HHH, HHH IS FUMING, MICHAELS IS CELEBRATING, WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT! BUH GAWD!"

This week as just annoying, 10 times through out the show some sort of HHH/HBK skit with either one waiting for the other, one attacking the other, or someone talking about them. Add that the perception of Bischoff locker room full of guys saying "None of you guys or feuds are important, you must put all your own business behind you and focus on breaking up the HHH/HBK dance-a-thon". Could you make it any more obvious that there's a two tier system here... The "Attack/Pull-a-part" (4 or 5 times in one night is stupid on any occasion) is a tactic that is used to build anticipation. But these are the last two guys which this tactic works for. These two been married to each other for the last half year, there's no intrigue of "Wow what happens if they get their hands on each other" Whaat, they have! Over and over again on many occasions.

I very much agree with Skloko. I thought all members of HHH/HBK/Benoit did a great job in the last couple of months, but you need to allow Benoit to sink or swim. Succeed or not. Having HBK & HHH with with top focus is something we've seen and makes Benoit look like a paper champion. It's a shame because HBK & HHH did a good job in putting him over as legit, so why not trust Benoit... So far when Benoit was focus of the show even without HBK or HHH with him he HAS delivered a good rating working with guys like Orton, Flair, Batista and Edge. So it looks like Benoit is a decent enough rating grabber without having to have his hand held by HBK or HHH. To defocus on him and put it on HHH & HBK who Skloko again is correct in saying those two haven't been a major rating booster partnered with each other in the past leaves me rolling my eyes.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory stays at BLUE alert - Guarded (With Benoit & Eddie being World & WWE champions you'd expect all's be right but couldn't do it due to Trish/Y2J character switches & whats the deal with JBL PPV main event)- 5/6

I appreciate Kurt Angle's competence. Finally, someone figured out how to track the Aces and Eights back to their lair. Its just a shame that they didn't do that back when Joseph Park was kidnapped.
