You guys do know that there was a RAW on tonight, right? I guess after that JR/Lawler debate crap, I dont blame you for blocking out tonight.

I do find it funny how the pyro guy fucked up Kane's entrance. Poor Kane isnt the same without some fire.

And WTF is that whole Eugene/Christy thing about? Did she give him a 5 second handjob for motivation to wrestling Xtian? That whole segment made no sense. Do they normally do photoshoots IN THE MIDDLE of a show? Can't they do that crap before a show? I know its just a lazy way to involve these talentless diva chicks, but come on...

Well, the main thing I got out of tonight:

Batista is OVER!!!! Seriously, that guy should really be put in the main-event position against Hunter. I really like Orton, but I think his face-push is a flop (not entirely his fault, as WWE has done a horrible job with it). Time to turn him heel (I really dug him as a heel) and start pushing Batista towards the title.

Ba. Tis. Ta. Get used to the chant, folks, 'cause he's in the midst of the Brock Push. Some slight screw-ups in the Benoit match (that Crossover attempt didn't go smoothly) but he's got the snap in his power moves and he's cool on the mic. I see Triple H turning on him first, fearful of his increasing momentum and making Batista the full-on face they tried with Orton.

Watching Lita and Kane, it seemed as if they were comparing notes on how bad the tech crew were screwing up. They had no idea what to do before leaving the ring.

I continue to root for Edge despite his general inability to win.

I do not have high hopes for the Tomko/Christian tag team. Christian's come too far to continue to have this big albatross.

I really, really, really hated the debate segment. I'm covinced they gave Mohammed the head covering to distract us from his spooky similarity to Jean Reno. But making the "face" argument boil down again to "agree with us or go away" just gets me steamed. It's wrestling, yes, but not even this should be so simplistic. I'm rooting for Mohammed the performer to outlast this cumbersome character gimmick.

One thing that struck me as kinda silly was the way Maven was saying how he was calling out Shelton and then suddenly there's a match made. It just seemed poorly planned.

The debate angle actually came off better than I had thought ... Hassan has some pretty good mic skills. Is Mark Mangus (Magnus?) really of some Arab descent? I wondered because he looks like he is sometimes and sometimes he doesn't.

What amazed me about the debate is that almost everything Hassan said is probably true.

It was almost surreal, what with JR and the King treating Hassan's promo like the words of the devil and the crowd making me feel like the most anti-American pinko commie terrorist on the face of the earth in the process. Really, to any openminded nonjingoist, the only thing heelish about the actual words Hassan uses is the tone of his voice.

Random thoughts:
--Jobbing Benoit cleanly in the opener makes him look like shit. I have no problem with them putting Batista over Benoit, but by god, treat it like something special.
--Giving away Orton vs HHH in a shitty encounter only two weeks after it was the plan for the Mania main event: hilarious.
--One year ago, Victoria was the rising woman's star. Now she's a jobber..what happened?

Raw Thoughts:

Batista/Benoit was a pretty decent opener....I loved the Batista/Trips backstage segment with the $100....Jericho/Edge was okay, too, but not as good as the first match....Boy, Sylvain looked terrible tonight. (1) Bad dropkick, (2) bad nip-up (or kip-up, whatever it is this week), (3) missed kick-out....The beatdown ended as expected, and they HAD to throw in the "love it or leave it" line. Other than that, nothing really shocking that Daivari/Hassan said....

Trish v.s Victoria wasn't much of anything. The return of Kane was really missing JR on commentary....I guess that Christy/Eugene/Regal backstage segment was just for us to see Regal dance, because it didn't make much sense otherwise....I liked the Ultimate Warrior reference in the Eugene/Christian match....Good main event as well, incorporating all of the ME players at New Year's Revolution.

Who books Kane? He loses the mask to reveal the inner monster, than he becomes soft husband? Why not make him into the RAW version of Rico. Give him pink tights, paint his face and have him skip to the ring.

Coach turns face. He comes down to honor JR and King, but than as soon as JR comes back he turns heel! Double turn, double turn!! Either way, Coach still sucks.

As a former Long Islander, I was a bit surprised by how much heat Hassan generated -- okay, Nassau County isn't NYC, but it ain't Alabama either.

While Hassan's promo was the typical jingo-baiting trash, I find myself interested in the guy despite myself -- he's clearly pretty sharp and articulate, and even if it's cheap heat, he's getting a lot of it. I'm curious to see if he can back it up in the ring. (But of course we all know they're just gonna job him to Lawler. Because having him win would make sense...)

So, just how drunk was the guy in charge of Kane's pyro tonight?

Strong first hour, boring second hour. I wonder if they should've saved the "beat the clock" gimmick for tonight to give themselves a stronger show heading into the PPV.

As for the PPV itself: meaningless women's match, meaningless -and- heatless tag match, Maven getting an IC title shot, Kane and Snitsky in the rematch no one wanted to see, Hassan and Lawler, and the Elimination Chamber. Not looking terribly inspiring -- at least, not the first couple hours...

Did Maven say "shit" when he was on commentary?

I swear they muted something he said out...

The story of Victoria is a sad one. They had an interesting character just ten months ago.

I was psyched both during and after the Batista / Benoit match which, despite a couple mistakes, was excellent. To ParagonOfVirtue: Benoit wasn't jobbed out cleanly... Batista won by slamming his head four times into an exposed turnbuckle. That ain't clean, that's a weapon.

I felt the match (and finish) really set up future collisions between these two, and I'm looking forward to them. I mean, if Batista can power out of the crossface... what's Benoit got to do? Same token, if Batista doesn't have a handy weapon ready, CAN he beat Benoit clean? We don't know that yet. Lots of fueds are just lining up for this guy.

Rest of the show though... blech I had high hopes for Jericho / Edge and was dissapointed. I believe JR used the word "competetive" four times, and it really felt like he was struggling to make a pedestrian match seem exciting.

I tuned out after the Eugene & Regal / Xtian & Tomko match -- the show wasn't holding me at all by that point. Not entirely sure just where it lost its grip, but after such a sizzling start, the night just fizzled. Ah well.

It was so highly obvious that Orton was reading from cue cards during his promo with Coach. During his spiel, he wasn't looking at Coach, wasn't looking at the camera, and was concentrated on just one spot ... while his eyes moved along to the text.

At least he didn't flub any lines this time.

And Batista - GOLD. During his match when Benoit, I got a kick out of Dave using Benoit's arm to make him tap out - of course, the ref saw it all...

RAW was kinda meh, but it had its good moments, and Batista is so on fire right now I don't know how long it'll be before they either give him the title or somehow kill his heat. Either way, should be somewhat interesting.

The Christy/Eugene segment only reminded me of Eugene's previous flirt with Christy when Christy gave Eugene a big wet one to help his confidence when Coach was dissing him a few months back. I thought that at least had some connection. The photoshoot stuff was pointless though. I only wished Regal's brief singing bit would've lasted longer, the guy was starting to be amusing but was quickly interrupted.

Benoit didn't lose clean, and neither did Jericho. Still, you can't expect either man to get any sort of momentum now coming into the PPV.

Triple H vs. Orton in the main event (surprise...?) was confusing considering that was the WWE's Golden Match but I hope that means they got other plans now. The match wasn't too great but not terrible either.

Victoria and Molly are gonna be jobbers every week at this rate. Sheesh.

I missed Kane, but the return bit left much to be desired. Anyone felt a little confused as to how Kane and Lita would react to each other?

Grenier really made a mess of that match, eek. At least Maven seems for the most part comfortable in his new heel role, contrast that to Orton in his face role.

I'm not bothering with the Hassan segments now, except that come Sunday he'll be taking on a 50+ year old announcer. Yippee.

I enjoyed Raw, but not as much as last week. Yes, Batista is red hot, so I fear he'll be the one who gets hurt in the Elimination Chamber.

Maven on commentary was better than I expected, and I'm guessing his push continues for a short IC title reign. Not that he deserves it, but the belt is not helping Shelton's character all that much now. Maven's character can use some credibility that a belt would give him.

I thought the same thing about Kane/Lita smiling about how bad the pyro guy was f-ing up. First, the pyro goes off before Snitsky comes down - but IT'S NOT HIS FAULT, and then the ring pyro goes off before Kane could raise his arms - it seemed like they didn't know when to cut to break.

Snitsky's nasty Backne roid zits have cleared up quite a bit. He doesn't look as monstrous without them.

Lawlor's blade job was pretty effective, I wasn't sure if Regal's "broken nose" was for real or not.

Regal had nose problems a couple years back (early 2002) that required surgery, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was real.

And that'd be a great if the faces (JR, Lawler, Foley, et al.) would criticize them for using their race as a crutch. But so far all the faces do is take issue with Hassan's opinion that America sucks. By not refuting Hassan's exaggerations, the faces are essentially saying "OK, we concede that every American is a racist bastard who wants Arabs dead, but it doesn't matter because America is the greatest nation in the world and if you don't like it you can get out." And it makes them look like jingoistic idiots, even though it should be easy to rhetorically dismantle Hassan because he's basically wrong.

People are going to continue to see that Hassan at least has the kernel of a good point as long as Raw fails to present a counterargument that goes beyond "U-S-A! U-S-A!" It's not hard to do--you've done it very well--but somebody on TV needs to do it.

I agree with Batista being pushed towards the title, but turning Orton back as a heel would be a monumentous mistake at this point. Look, he's over as a face--no matter how much you want him to be a heel, the face thing is working. The fans are reacting to him. Is he better as a heel? Maybe, maybe not. But, he's getting face pops, and he is over. To turn him back at this point would be admitting that the face turn was a big debacle, and as we all know, the fed just isn't going to admit that.

That being said, I enjoyed RAW tonight. DAVE~! was awesome, as he has been the past few weeks, the matches were decent, and I skipped the debate, so I don't think I missed much. Christy being in a photoshoot backstage didn't bother me that much, mostly 'cause I could swear I've seen that before. What did she do to motivate Eugene? Dunno. Don't care.
