The problem with a Cena turn is that suddenly, all of the smarky male fans who've been booing him for the last six years will suddenly start cheering him. (Both just to be contrary, and because I suspect Cena will actually be an awesome heel.) The kids, meanwhile, will be sitting on their hands and not buying merchandise. So WWE will be hurt from both ends.

The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball

But then can't they just sell a buttload of "Dark Cena" merchandise to the guys?

I think if Cena went heel, it would be a short run before they had to turn him back to an edgy face. Kinda like Rock's first heel turn. Then you'd have an edgier Cena that everyone would get behind.

I think it would end up more like Bret Hart before he left. Hart was way over with the kids and was a mega heel in the US when he turned, but like he said in 'Wrestling With the Shadows' once Austin took the top face spot and DX took the top heel spot he felt like he was going to be in limbo after the initial heat died down.

If Cena went heel it would have to be for the long haul, and he's been selling too much stuff to turn just yet. That being said I don't know why they can't give him an angry edge. CM Punk needs to make him snap even if they do the whole Cena snaps then feels bad about it ala HBK. If Cena just went bananas once on Punk with a chair it would add a lot to the overall angle.

The real question is are they ever going to get behind a face like they do with Rey, Orton or Cena in the foreseeable future? They are ok with getting behind heels of late, but faces seem to be few and far between. Unless they are going to turn Punk, I don't see anyone new coming out of the current crop that will get the Mega Push that Cena and Orton get.

I think they're testing the waters with Sheamus right now, and if he can keep some momentum (which he's losing fast), the Miz might make for a realistic turn coming up.

Losing momentum? Didn't he really only "officially" turn this past week on Smackdown by accepting Mark Henry's challenge?

Punk's already turned, and is already one of the top three faces in the company.

Maybe lotjx once again posted about shows he didn't actually watch?
Just joking! Here is what lotjx will answer: Punk isn't a face, he's a tweener at best!

What he said. As long as the fans pop for HHH when he runs him down, he is a heel.

What's really impressed me about Punk is how totally at ease he is in the middle of the ring on the mic. Whether it's Vince McMahon, HBK, Triple H, Austin, etc. It's pretty clear he's a big fan of the product and grew up watching these guys on TV, and I can't detect an ounce of nervousness. I know he's not a rookie, but he hasn't been around decades either. He seems 100% assured and confident in what he is saying at all times-- a true indication of a Superstar.

1. When they had the whole "John Cena is going to be fired" angle I was hoping he would be fired and come back much later with a refreshed character. Like The Rock said (in this video http://www.whosay.com/DwayneJohnson/videos/46340 minute 7) the reason Cena gets booed is cause he i.e. "graduated from a private high school and then [he goes] hardcore thuganomics... phony."

2. As per CM Punk, I'm kind of disheartened that they seem to be making this into a Punk=Austin,Trips=Vince thing ... Obviously Punk isn't a redneck everyman but he's still going to be the guy that speaks for "the fans" while Trips is the authority figure... I hope these guys have something new in mind instead.

I will say that wishing Mr McMahon all the best in his future endeavours was hilarious.

However, a power squabble, deuling management, bla-bla-bla storyline between HHH & this guy (or most anybody, really -- maybe Paul Heyman could be the exception) makes me nauseous.

Yeah, I have to agree. The faces may be new, but this is ultimately territory that's being rehashed for the umpteenth time. I'm not looking forward to it in that respect.

However, I do have to admit that Johnny Ace has those evil facials DOWN!

I grew up watching Lawler in Memphis. He beat EVERYBODY. But nowadays, I couldn't realistically believe him beating anyone, even in Memphis. Hogan mentioned in the press conference that he thought the Jillian character on SD! was a rib on Brooke.
