Surprised nobody is talking about this week’s ratings. These are the last few weeks of ratings courtesy of TV by the Numbers. (tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com) (Total = total viewers in thousands, 18-49 = Adults 18-49 rating)

Date 8PM 9PM 10PM
  TotalA18-49TotalA18-49TotalA18-49
May 23Macho Man RIP, OtL fallout  5,6031.95,2361.9
May 30Truth torments Little Jimmy  4,5111.64,8681.8
Jun 6TE results, Austin refs ME  5,0911.74,8441.7
Jun 13Austin guest GM3,8311.44,7021.74,9611.7
Jun 20CP fallout, Viewer’s Choice4,0331.45,0441.75,1531.7
Jun 27Roulette, 1st Punk promo  4,8531.65,0321.7
Jul 4Holiday, Punk suspended  3,6651.23,7681.3
Jul 11Punk negotiations  4,2171.44,5541.6
Jul 18MitB fallout, Title Tourney  4,7031.64,9811.7
Jul 252 title matches, Punk returns  4,4841.55,1261.8

So, what do we see? A shockingly low first hour this week that opened with the tournament finals. Otherwise, things seem pretty...status quo? Not having quarter hour breakdowns prevents us from doing a more useful analysis, but I’m wondering if this is causing any panic. Now Punk is "back", so we'll see what happens next week.

Also: Looking back at the last two months, July 11 was a strange week. It almost appears to be a non-holiday anomaly.

Not at all, but it certainly didn't hurt their business either. In fact, I'm pretty sure it helped them. It certainly made for some decent story lines.

...and again, it didn't HURT their business. People still watched week after week. Can you name anyone who was so horrified by that angle that they stopped watching WWE? The only 'lasting effects' Hassan had was the Hassan Intro Music Meme on YTMND. That didn't last all that long either, but they're still funny. A month after they released him, he was all but forgotten by the general media and average fans.

I'm saying no to this one too. The only reason Christian was given a shot was because Edge retired. Taking the title off him so quickly wasn't a boneheaded move by the company because more than likely, he was never supposed to get it to begin with. I'm guessing Orton is injured right now and giving Christian the belt was one of the few options they had.

That shit's uglier than the spinner belt and the diva's belt put together. He probably had to pay for it himself. You keep forgetting that no one cares about Zack Ryder. Did you not hear the non-pop he got when he came out Monday? No one cares.

UPN lost their shit when the Hassan thing happened and ordered them to kill the character. WWE said "yes sir sorry sir."

Guess who is challenging Christian at every house show? hint: he's angry

ratio of "let's go Ryder" chants to seconds of his match was about 1:1.

Yeah a chant by about 25 people. He got a decent pop when he was announced, but that match was dead. The guy is a niche act people. It is ok to like him, but realize he ain't gonna be a top act.

I'm not the biggest Ryder fan, but I don't think it is fair to judge his over-ness based on reaction to a squash against a non-wrestler who had kind of already killed the crowd and couldn't properly take his finisher without making them both look like the suffered from a mild form of retardation.

I don't really remember the UPN 'backlash'. Neither do the majority of viewers. Most people probably don't even remember Hasan. Hell, UPN hasn't even been a network in five years and in today's market, that might as well be a hundred years. Quick quiz: Name 5 shows that were on UPN during it's last season WITHOUT googling it. Answer: You can't.

House shows? Most people don't go to those and besides that, if it's not on TV... it doesn't matter.

That Ryder chant was pathetic. They could have sent YOU out there against Michael Cole and you'd have gotten at least the same reaction. Supposedly, people 'hate' Michael Cole. Anyone going out in front of a live crowd and beating him should get a huge, monster pop. That did not happen. Either people don't 'hate' Michael Cole as much as we'd like to think... or no one gives a fuck about Zack Ryder. I'll take the latter.

You are forgetting that the non-wrestler was Michael Cole, arguably the biggest heel character of the past year. Again, anyone beating on him should get a monster reaction, and Ryder didn't get it. That speaks volumes towards his bank-ability.

Here's the thing with Zack Ryder. I want the guy to get a push. Not because he's secretly a huge star, not because I'm his biggest fan (I've never even watched his YouTube videos) but because the guy is busting his ass trying to get himself over. Lots of guys don't get TV time, but Ryder is making videos, talking on Twitter, doing anything he can to make a name for himself. He's worked hard to develop a character and a look and catchphrases and a few unique moves while getting next to no support from the company he works for. That kind of thing should be rewarded. (And it looks like it is happening, so kudos to the WWE on that one.)

He's generated a cult following via the internet. That doesn't mean he's going to get a superstar reaction at the live shows, no matter what situation they drop him into. Casual fans remember him as a TV jobber, if they know him at all. It doesn't mean he can't turn into something. Maybe not a main-event something, but something.

WWE seems so determined to prove that people can't get over, when they should be trying to prove that they can get ANYONE over.

I clearly remember it being quite a big deal. And your original point was the backlash WWE suffered at the time...what does people remembering Hassan/UPN shows now have anything to do with the backlash then?

The Ryder chant was short on Raw, but I thought it was loud for however long it lasted.

EDIT: And on the Orton thing...your point was Orton was injured, which is why Christian got the title. Justin said Orton is challenging on all the house shows, so he's not injured. And your response was...house shows don't mean anything? Well, if Orton was hurt, he certainly wouldn't be wrestling on them.

I remember the crowd being jacked in (to use the old board phrase) to this show. They were manic and loud and in tune to the events. Considering that Cole was set up to be destroyed by a monster (heel or face), the low-level midcarder they picked benefited from a jazzed audience.

But it doesn't show anything about his bankability. What it does show is that a relatively small percentage of the live audience follows the interweb life of Ryder. To put a relatively unknown (unknown because he never gets tv time) superstar against arguably the biggest heel of the past year and to expect a monster POP just because he's against Cole might have a listing under the definition of insanity. What would the crowd be cheering for? Or, in simpler terms, "Hey look! It's that guy that I don't know and he's fighting Cole!"

Point being that if he got continual exposure for months up until that match with Cole, he would've gotten a much larger response. To say he isn't bankable because he didn't get a response leads to him not being used which will lead to him not getting a response the next time he is allowed on tv. Perhaps you missed my assertion that Cole - past overness aside - had already killed the bit. The "Cole as a HHH-Mini Me" sounds good on paper, but the crowd was flat. Ryder didn't kill a hot bit, he just didn't save an already dead one.

Many, many successful people in the business got their spot because someone quit or didn't show up or pissed off the promoter. Christian also gave Orton the best matches he's had in years. Are you going to give Edge credit for that too?

And Did Zack Ryder steal your girlfriend and kill your dog? One weak pop and you know for a fact all the potential he could ever possibly have his entire career? I've barely seen the guy on TV and I'm not into his youtube stuff, but I see no reason why he can't be better utilized. I don't think "the internet" expects him to be WWE Champ, I just think they feel an (apparently) funny creative guy who loves the business is at least as deserving of a spot as Jennifer Hudson's boyfriend.

Or were paralyzed in a plane crash.

And for those bitching about Ryder's lack of overness... Of course he's not over with the live crowds yet. Why should he be? He hasn't been given the chance to get over. But he's proven (via the Internet) that he has the tools to get himself over if given the opportunity. And I think that's what most people, including me, want, for him to be given that opportunity on television. If he doesn't get over with the mainstream crowd, given the chance, then so be it. The guy has more talent (both in ring and on mic) than at least 85% of the regularly televised roster. Not utilizing him at all is the epitome of ignorance.
