Maybe it was my imagination, but I heard more cheers for CM Punk than Cena, and on any given day, there's a definite anti-Cena vibe in the arenas. Sure, there are kids who worship him, but for the most part, he's dull. He's not doing anything new.

re: Cena//Rey - I haven't watched Raw yet, but from what I can gather, Cena was given the title shot, he didn't ask for it, correct?

Right. We never really heard from either of them about the match.

Rey would! He didn't even complain when forced to wait a week instead of getting the rightful chance to finish the tournament against an injured Miz. That's what makes it seem especially shitty from Cena: he gets/takes a title shot against not only a guy who has had to wrestle three more matches than he has over the last eight days, but also is the smallest guy on the roster (not currently suspended) but also also the single most honorable and goodhearted man currently in the company, if not in the company's entire history.*

We're seeing the house show Saturday; a co-worker forwarded an e-mail from the MetroCentre now saying the card's changed to Punk v. Cena from ADR v. Cena*. Where this puts ADR, I don't know.

Unfortunately for ADR, I don't care - I'm jazzed for a house show. I wasn't the last time they were here for Smackdown - yet now? I can't wait. Damn you, Phil.

*Still had the "this card may change" disclaimer, so MMMV.

All the weekend cards are being changed to Punk/Cena with his return, so you should be good.

If you didn't like how Raw ended, that was not the original plan. This was:

If that had happened, I'd think we would've needed to turn off all message boards for at least 72 hours, just to survive the nuclear explosion of WWE hate. The short term plan - and it still might eventually be - would have been Punk vs a heel HHH for SummerSlam, Hunter getting Punk over as a big star. There's a track record there! It's...uh, mixed. Since Meltzer assets that the Punk storyline is secondary to getting HHH over as new Man in Charge, I have doubts about how well it would've gone this time.

So, if they had gone with the original plan, would that have meant Cena and Punk uniting because Super Good Guys must become buddy/buddy overnight?

Punk also confirms that "Cult of Personality" is here to stay. The decent thing to do would be to retire "This Fire Burns" for good, because that's WAY too cool a theme song to be wasted on a pair of losers like McGillicutty and Otunga.

Actually, I'd have totally LOVED for that to happen just to watch the internets explode. I was already expecting HHH to come out and do something to CM Punk but it didn't happen. Reading this tells me my gut reaction was at least partially right. Oh... what could have been.

Haha holy shit how that would have bombed. Although given that this is how they're thinking, "HHH screws Punk at SummerSlam" seems to be the obvious finish now.

Which I would be totally fine with if Cena was in on it. Then perhaps Punk brings in Cabana to help even the odds. I think a face Punk chasing a heel Cena who screwed him out of the title would be HUGE. It's just s shame they booked Cena-Rock a year in advance.

There's ways to do this well without turning Cena, though, which is obviously what they want. HHH screws Punk to help Cena win, Cena says "I'm not your stooge, bossman", HHH brings out Alberto as his backup corporate puppet to take the title. Something like that. That gets them Cena/ADR and Punk/HHH for the fall, which is what they desperately seem to want.

It's kind of disheartening that HHH is now back as a front-and-centre ME lynchpin, but I have (perhaps foolish) hope that he knows Punk needs to be taken care of for the future.

HHH involved in anything with a budding star for a title usually leads to said person fighting for the IC title two months later. I wish I could say the original idea is shocking, but the real shocking part isn't they go with it. I will say all of the fun with Punk is the fact he has the title and flaunting it in WWE's face. Once that is removed, I don't know how much fun he will be especially in a feud with the Push Killer. ADR/Cena went from ok that sounds interesting to down right tedious.

A brighter side of things, Traver just accused Cena on twitter of breaking his arm then laughing to him about it. Oh, this company. http://rajah.com/base/node/23699

A feud that hasn't happened yet has gone from "interesting" to "tedious"? CM Punk is only interesting with the title despite only holding it for ten days out of the past six weeks? Wha?

EDIT: Whoa, someone check if Michael Tarver's dogs are enclosed in the pool area.

Yeah, they can obviously do this without turning Cena, but that's the problem. Simply because they can do it, doesn't mean it's the right decision. There's no way Cena should be going over Punk unless he turns heel. HHH can screw Punk as payback for making the company look bad. Cena goes along with it because the title means so much to him, more than the fickle fans support Punk now. Cena could even dodge Punk. There are so many ways they could make this massive and get the fans begging for Punk to take the title from Cena and then by the time Punk finally gets his rematch and beats Cena it should blow the roof off.

Not that this will happen, because they would rather play it safe.

Am I the only one wondering what kind of leverage Punk got when he re-signed?

In the Grantland podcast, Punk said (at least regarding his packaging), he can do whatever he wants. That leeway, however, far it reaches, seemed to be a significant factor in choosing to re-sign, given the internal debate his contract expiration sparked.

Misterio was forced to defend the parentage and honor of his children (and his staunch belief that nurture, not nature, is the key to shaping the human soul) thanks to the dastardly Eddy Guerrero and the edgy, controversial CM Punk. So that only adds to his innate goodness.

I don't know if anybody still holds a TV grudge about HHH intentionally screwing people up and making for terrible, terrible TV here more than me, but this just seems so on the nose (heh heh, big nose) re: everyone's worst case scenario that I have a hard time believing this is true and not something either Punk or HHH had someone leak out just to troll the internet.

Anyway, the biggest problem with Del Rio is that, through no fault of his own, he's just barely in the top five most credible RAw threats to Cena right now. Punk is obviously at the top, and both he and Rey could be viable Summerslam main events vs. Cena. In theory, HHH could just announce himself as Cena's challenger and you could sell the show on that, too. After them, both Miz and Truth have at least some kind of visual victory over Cena in the past, though neither would be Summerslam-worthy at this point. Del Rio's had such limited interaction with Cena, that it seems like you do need to have him cash in the briefcase and take the title off Cena before the PPV to make a Cena/Del Rio main event even a little bit sellable. So I guess I at least buy that part, that they were considering getting one of those belts on Del Rio this week.

Its tedious in the fact that were a 99% sure ADR is going to use Mitb against Cena then feud with him til Rock gets back. I have really come to loath Mitb now that both shows have it. If it was for one title shot then sure it could be interesting, now its a rehash of everything we have seen before when the heel has it especially when Miz knocked it out of the park last year.

And this has been the most fun ten days in the WWE in a long time. Once the title is out of the picture for Punk what then? A feud with the boss who everyone magically forget is fucking boring without HBK or worse a guy who has stopped careers dead in their tracks. Its Austin/McMahon with the fans divided especially Hunter goes on his burial promo rant. I could be wrong, but I don't see any good coming out of HHH/Punk as opposed to Punk vs. the WWE. I am very skeptical of any Cena/Punk team up as it would feel like selling out to some degree.

But the reaction hasn't changed, Cena has had that same mixed reaction for years, while he main evented big PPVs and sold a shitload of merchandise.

I think if you see Cabana in WWE it's going to be more as lower level guy who's there to travel with Punk than it would be as his on-screen Brutus Beefcake. Then again, his name's been brought up enough that he can't really just show up as "hello I'm Jack Korpela, and brand new guy Scotty Goldman is set to take on Curt Hawkins."

The hopeful part of the Observer was essentially that the company is obsessed with mainstream attention (which Punk has delivered them like none other), and works as a caste system where once you're considered a top guy then you're permanently grandfathered in (kind of like Edge in 2006), which is affected in part by size of contract (and Punk got a very good one). So at least as of now the idea in WWE was that "there wasn't just a big two of Cena and Orton, but a big three of Cena, Punk, and Orton."

Triple H is the WWE now. And you can't build to a match with a corporation, but you can have one with Triple H. Seems to me like it's easy to read where this is going. The "omg shoot" stuff caught on so strong that they're going to keep that going with Punk saying all the things to Triple H's face that internet people want to hear.

That's not what tedious means! I think two MITB is overkill, but I give them credit in that both years of double briefcases they haven't doubled the same story on both show:
2010: Raw - heel cheat-wins it after a match / SD - same night cash-in
2011: Raw - heel probably cheat-wins it after a match / SD - shot called for a match in advance
