TONIGHT: What will be the immediate effects of Vince McMahon being removed from power and replaced with Triple H? We’ll find out tonight, plus, it’s the finals of the WWE Championship tournament: Rey Mysterio vs. The Miz. According to WWE, that match will kick off the show. During the break of NCIS, Jerry “The King” Lawler and Michael Cole said that Triple H would give a “State of WWE Address” tonight.

-WWE Open.

-Right to the arena we go. The WWE Championship sat on a small tale at ringside, atop a red adornment. Justin Roberts could be heard announcing the first match being for the WWE Championship.

(1) Rey Mysterio vs. The Miz – WWE Championship Tournament Finals
Michael Cole didn’t speak until all of Rey’s fireworks were done for his entrance. He and Jerry Lawler were shown at ringside. Cole chronicled who each man defeated to get to this point. Prior to introductions, the locker room was shown watching this match. Cole sold this as the most important thing going on in America tonight. The match began with a few shoulder knock-downs by Miz, but Rey came back with kicks. Headscissors take-over (which Cole called a “hurricanrana”) but Miz caught a true hurricanrana attempt and dropped him over his head, head-first into the turnbuckle. Corner clothesline found the mark, garnering Miz a two-count. Miz settled into a rear chinlock. Back elbow by Rey, but Miz dumped him out the ring under the bottom rope. Nice baseball slide caught Rey right in the chops. Match went to the outside (remember, it can only end by pinfall or submission). Crowd began to chant “Miz is awful” I think (so hard to tell between “awesome” and “awful”). Rey sent Miz into the ring steps, and they went to break at 4:42.

[Commercial Break]

Lawler intro’d out of the break, “this isn’t some boring political rhetoric you’re forced to listen to, this is Monday Night Raw.” They’re really hammering that point home. Hopefully, no skits related to it. Miz continued to work Rey over, but Rey flipped out of a suplex. Standing switch, and Miz was sent shoulder-first into the ring post. Rey went to the top and connected on the seated senton. Springboard cross-body for a near-fall. Miz dodged a kick and landed a short DDT for two. Big kick by Miz for two. After he couldn’t get the pin, we saw a bit of panic on Miz’s face. Low dropkick by Rey, but Miz avoided the 619. Slingshot powerbomb by Miz and again Cole did the annoying, “that’s it! New champion!” thing to tell you he wasn’t really going to win. That was one where you could’ve bought the near-fall if not for that, too. Skull-Crushing Finale countered by Rey, but Rey ended up in the Tree of Woe. Running knee in the corner missed, as Rey hoisted himself up. It was the bad knee of Miz, and Rey put him in position for the 619. It hit and the crowd was electric. Splash off the top, and we’ve got a new champ.

WINNER: Mysterio, at 13:17. That’s some way to open Raw. Some crowds have been lukewarm for Rey lately (most notably the Chicago crowd), but it helped that they were fully behind him here.

They briefly showed the wrestlers reacting in the back. As Rey celebrated, Miz attacked him. Alberto Del Rio’s music played and he walked out with a referee and his briefcase. Del Rio told the announcers that he was going to cash it in. But before he could, Rey took him out outside the ring. Del Rio grabbed his briefcase and backed away from ringside and up the ramp. They replayed the finish of the match.

-Cole talked about Triple H as the new COO, and how he’ll give the State of the WWE Address later tonight. Lawler said there’s a fresh feeling in the building tonight.

[Commercial Break]

-Back live, they showed Rey winning the title from moments ago, including a near-fall for Miz on the nice slingshot powerbomb.

-Backstage, Mysterio was being congratulated by a bunch of lower card guys, including referee Rod Zapata, Chris Masters, Darren Young, Tyler Reks, Zack Ryder, Titus O’Neill, Beth Phoenix, Derrick Bateman (really hamming it up), Curt Hawkins and Alex Riley. They gave him a champagne bath. Everybody stopped when Rey got to John Cena. Cena shook his hand and congratulated him. Josh Mathews walked in and asked him about winning. He said everyone needs to make sacrifices if they want to win. He told his kids he’s coming home as champion. More celebration ensued.

-The announcers talked about Rey being the first champion under the Triple H regime. Then they sent it to a video package of how Triple H took over last week. Very solemn tone. Over the final image of Vince taking in the “thank you Vince” chant in slow motion, Lawler said we’re all awaiting the State of the WWE address later tonight.

[Commercial Break]

(2) Dolph Ziggler vs. Evan Bourne
Ziggler came out to a re-mixed, slower version of his theme. Cole said a win here would put Bourne in the hunt for a U.S. Title match. The men traded leapfrogs and Bourne won out with a dropkick. The match went to the outside for a brief time, then back in with a kick to the leg by Bourne. Fameasser for two by Ziggler. I love hearing the announcers on Raw and Smackdown always having to get the word “power” in, awkward as it may be, in order to plug Kmart “powering” the WWE Live tour. Dropkick by Ziggler, then a side headlock. Cole said at one point, Bourne was a vice president of a mailbox company, as he majored in Marketing at the University of Missouri. Jumping knee to the face by Bourne, but as Ziggler took over, Bourne plucked him off the top rope with a headscissors. Bourne set Ziggler up, but missed Air Bourne. He landed gingerly on his feet, so Ziggler connected with the Zig Zag. Sleeper applied and he fell back with it, so Bourne was done.

Winner: Ziggler, at 3:25. Nice match and it was good to see a champion actually win in a non-title match. Too bad it had to be Bourne taking the fall, but he put in a good effort.

Ziggler grabbed the mic and screamed, “Follow that!” to no one in particular. Up on the ramp, “I dare someone to follow that!” he screamed.

-Tonight, Alberto Del Rio faces Kofi Kingston in a re-match from last week.

[Commercial Break]

-They showed a clip from earlier tonight, where the Bellas and Eve were arguing backstage. Keith Stone (of Keystone fame) walked up and asked about what they were arguing about. Eve said they always switch during the matches and cheat. Keith said he knows what it’s like to go “twinsane”, but he doesn’t like identity fraud (or warm beer, or cottage cheese). He told Eve to hold his stones. He took a marker and was about to write on one of the Bellas…the camera turned to the other Bella and Eve and when it turned back, the other Bella had a whole tattoo on her arm from Stone. Eve said Keith was so smooth. We got fine print talking about how Keith Stone was used with permission from Keystone and to drink responsibly. That had all the makings of a terrible segment, but I kinda enjoyed it.

(3) Melina & Maryse vs. Eve & Kelly Kelly
No entrance for the heels. Cole said the Bellas were so embarrassed, they left the arena. Eve set up for the standing moonsault and shook her ass and….uh, where was I? Maryse looked like she was going to move out of the way, but moved right back to take the spot. The heels did end up taking over on Eve, and Melina tagged in. She was dressed all in black. Kick to the face by Eve, then a tag to Kelly. Neck-breaker by Kelly. Maryse cowered in the corenr when Kelly went after her, so Kelly smacked her in the butt. Kelly did Maryse’s pre-match pose, so Maryse broke up the pin. Eve took her out and Melina went after Kelly. Kelly dodged doubl-knee attack, and landed the K2 legdrop for the win.

Winners: Kelly and Eve, at 2:47. That outfit by Melina was not flattering for her. Aside from Kelly’s pose and Eve’s rump-shaking, match was forgettable.

-Backstage in a hallway, R-Truth was having an animated discussion with Triple H. We couldn’t hear it, but Cole said Triple H was going to announce a blockbuster return to WWE. Lawler got as far as guessing “CM…” but didn’t finish. Cole said he hopes that’s who it is.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole announced that Cee Lo Green would perform at Summerslam. Clearly, no one in WWE saw his performance at the NBA All-Star game this past season. Wow, was that bad.

-Triple H came out. He was introduced as the Chief Operating Officer of WWE. Cole said Triple H would also be on Smackdown this coming week. Trips said that before he got started, he did want to acknowledge why everyone is here tonight, the reason WWE is the global success that it is. He said one man’s genius has gotten us to where we are, so he thanked Vince. Crowd started in on the chant too. After pausing for the crowd, he said he’s here not about the past, but the future. He talked about Rey Mysterio winning the WWE Title earlier tonight, and congratulated him. Trips said he’s in charge, so he’s doing things a little differently, so tonight, there will be a second WWE Title match. He said both men are in agreement that this match needs to take place, so Rey will face John Cena. “I like this, this is fun,” said Triple H.

Hunter said where ever he goes, he hears this one man’s name…and immediately a “CM Punk” chant started. He said people are in agreement that this one person needs to be back on Raw, so he went out of his way to negotiate and re-sign this person. Hunter pointed to the stage and Jim Ross’ music played. He’s not CM Punk, but he’ll do. JR went in and shook the hand of Hunter, then saluted the crowd and walked to the announce table. Cole refused to shake JR’s hand and the crowd chanted “you suck.” Cole threw down his headset and stood on the announce table with a mic. He told Triple H “no disrespect,” then said Trips talks about the future, but JR is the walking dead. He said that ever since Wrestlemania, he’s done everything the company has asked of him, and embarrassed himself along the way. He said he’d do anything the company wants him to do, but he refuses to work with “this fat hayseed” in JR. I think he made fun of JR’s Bell’s Palsy, then Cole asked JR if he needs the money since his restaurant went belly-up and asked if he ate all the profits. Cole said the only thing bigger than JR’s ego is his gut. Cole had a hissy fit, saying he won’t work with JR. If anyone really thought Vince was out, this anti-JR promo should reel you back into reality.

“Are you done?” Triple H asked. Hunter said he had a feeling that Cole would be of this opinion, so his first inkling was to fire Cole, but it would cost more to fire him than to keep him. Hunter said Cole can leave, and if he does, he’ll be in breach of contract. He said he understand this was sprung on Cole last-second, so he’s going to give Cole the rest of of the night off, and he has until Friday for Smackdown to decide if he wants to stay. Cole said he won’t quit under any circumstance so he’ll do the job the rest of the night. Triple H said Cole shouldn’t sit down because he relieved him for the night, and he’ll be late for his match. Cole said that was funny, as he’s retired. Hunter said he knew Cole didn’t have gear, so he selected some himself, and it’s in the trainer’s room. Hunter said Cole could wrestle…”unless you want to quit.” Cole continued to complain as he went around the ring and up the ramp. Then R-Truth came out.

“Out with the old and in with the new,” he said. Truth said Hunter has been a part of the conspiracy since day one. He told the crowd not to “what?” him. Truth asked Hunter what he was going to do for him. He said Little Jimmy cost him his match at Capitol Punishment, and spiders and heights cost him his match at MITB. Truth kept talking to invisible men at his side. Triple H mocked him by talking to someone at his side too. Truth got the crazy eyes and Trips said his imaginary friend doesn’t like the way Truth’s imaginary friend is eyeballing him. “You’re crazy!” Truth said. “You’re talking to people who don’t exist!” “It’s like I’m crazy, right?” Triple H asked. Truth said Hunter may be the Game, but he’s not playing. Truth left and was heading up the ramp, but Triple H told all of them to stop. He said he re-signed another guy, and he wanted a piece of Truth: It was John Morrison. Morrison came out and punched Truth right int eh face. The two men brawled at ringside, then Morrison shoved Truth into the ring. Tackle by Morrison and some punches landed as well. Starship Pain connected. They played Morrison’s music as Truth rolled out of the ring. That wasn’t much of a State of WWE Address, despite the length of the segment. JR’s return I like of course, but if the three-man booth turns into the constant bickering that’s happening on Smackdown, it’ll be all for naught.

-Next, Michael Cole against a mystery man.

-Plus, Rey Mysterio faces John Cena for the WWE Title.

[Commercial Break]

-The King of Kings theme played, and Michael Cole came out dressed like Triple H. He had the bottle of water and walked like he had muscles on top of muscles. Cole did the water spit on the apron and he even got the spotlight on him. Everybody seemed to avoid the water bottle when it was thrown into the crowd.

(4) Michael Cole vs. Zack Ryder
Ryder grabbed Cole and sent him head-first into the turnbuckle. Loud “Let’s go Ryder” chant. Rough Ryder legdrop finished it early.

Winner: Ryder, at :25. Hey, you gotta start at the bottom I guess. Focus was on Cole after the match. Oh well.

-Rey vs. Cena for the title is still to come.

-Next, Kofi vs. Del Rio.

[Commercial Break]

-Justin Roberts introduced Ricardo Rodriguez, who in turn, introduced Alberto Del Rio.

(5) Alberto Del Rio vs. Kofi Kingston
Del Rio grounded Kofi early on, but Kofi rolled Del Rio up for two. He clotheslined ADR over the top rope and to the floor. Del Rio ran away from a potential aerial attack and they went to break at :54.

[Commercial Break]

Back to action at 4:07. Del Rio continued his assault on Kingston, but dove at him and missed, jamming his shoulder into the ring post. Springboard cross-body by Kofi for two. Jumping clothesline by Kingston and he began to gain momentum. Boom Drop was next and it hit. He set up for the Trouble in Paradise, but Del Rio got out of the way and brought Kofi down arm-first across his legs. Flip kick in the corner on Del Rio. He climbed on Del Rio’s shoudlers and tried a Victory Roll. Del Rio sat down, but Kofi reversed it for two as ADR got the bottom rope at the last second. Back to the arm for Del Rio, then he applied the cross arm-breaker. Kofi tapped.

Winner: Del Rio, via submission, at 7:15. Fine action.

-Next, Rey Mysterio, the newly-crowned WWE Champion, takes on John Cena.

[Commercial Break]

-Lawler and JR were shown on camera and Lawler was ecstatic to have JR back. JR talked about Smackdown being the highest-rated show on SyFy since its debut there.

-JR sent it to Josh Mathews backstage. Miz was suiting back up when Mathews walked up to him. Miz said things have gone all wrong tonight. He said things have turned worse since Triple H took over, and John Cena should’ve been fired. Miz said the face of the company is literally a man with no face. He parroted Cole’s earlier comment about “how can Rey go on talk shows and media appearances with a mask?” Uh, the same way he always has? Miz said giving Cena a title match tonight is a huge mistake.

-Rey Mysterio made his entrance into the arena for the second time tonight. Mysterio faces John Cena next.

[Commercial Break]

-Next week, there will be a #1 Contender Diva’s Battle Royal to see who will face Kelly Kelly at Summerslam.

(6) Rey Mysterio vs. John Cena – WWE Championship Match
No formal ring intros here. Mysterio kicked at the quad of Cena to start. He had some success with it, but was knocked down by Cena, who grabbed a wrist-lock. Mysterio jumped up onto Cena’s shoulders, then rolled him up for two. Crowd chanted “CM Punk” as things slowed a bit, but it didn’t last long. Cena shoved Rey into the corner. “Let’s go Cena/Cena sucks” chant. Mysterio dove into Cena at ringside. Cena nearly turned Rey inside-out with a clothesline. DDT counter by Rey for two. Cena blocked a 619, and slammed him down for two. Cena went for a shoulder-block but Rey dropkicked him in mid-air. Cena powered Rey back down and went for the Five-Knuckle Shuffle. That connected, but Rey countered an Attitude Adjustment. Springboard cross-body, but Cena caught him in mid-air. Rey took him down with a head-scissors. Seated Senton from the top, but Cena kicked out. He tried to go into an STF, but Rey countered and applied one of his own. Wow! Cena got to his feet on one leg with Rey still on him. He put Rey up for the AA, but Cena’s knee buckled. Rey hit the 619, and he then went to the top, slowly. Splash off the top, but Cena got the knees up. Attempted hurricanrana turned into a powerbomb by Cena. Legdrop off the top by Cena for two. Rey went for the 619, but Cena got to his feet and grabbed Rey, hit the AA, and won.

Winner: Cena, at 12:50.

After the match, Cena picked Rey up and raised his arm. Cena’s music cut off and all of a sudden “Cult of Personality” started playing. Cena looked around and no one came out. Finally, CM Punk walked out wearing his Chicago t-shirt and the WWE Championship belt around his waist. He went to both sides of the ramp for crowd reactions, then walked to the ring. Punk entered the ring as Cena had his Spinner belt and Punk had his. Cena raised the title over his head, so Punk took off his Spinner belt (with his name on it). He raised it and got a louder reaction. The men stared at each other as the show went off the air.

I understand why they went with "Cult of Personality", but I must admit I like "This Fire Burns" better.

Excellent show all the way around, and with 100% MORE RYDER. WWWYKI. "I'M ON RAW!".

Still waiting on the Miz face turn. Needs to happen at some point.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

I marked out like a baby at the end there. Hoping that Punk is back on board for the long term instead of one of those short term deals just so the angle can play out, because realistically, Cena/Rock being etched in stone for WM is the ONLY thing that should be getting in the way of Punk having a long run with the belt.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

easter egg backstory: that was Punk's ROH music. One of them, anyway.

Wish they got to the ending scene without making last week and a good chunk of this week seem pointless.

This may be successful. It may not. But what they did tonight turned this Punk angle into just another "guy vs. Cena" angle. It may still be fun to watch, but it is time to dial expectations down from "this could change the business" to "let's see if Punk gets a win or two more before Super Cena wins."

Of course anything more than the latter line of thought was always overly optimistic anyhow I guess.

Well that was kind of fast.

That was quite the Raw. I mean, it was hotshotted to fuck and back, but it was really good. It was also necessary to get over Triple H as a major change and a guy who gets things done. Still, Rey/Cena could've been promoted for a week as a major match, but then they would've only had one week left before SummerSlam and they had to rush through all these switches to get to Punk/Cena title vs. title. To reunify a title that has been splintered for a ... week.

I think it's too soon to bring him back. Imagine how much bigger that already-epic show close would've been if it happened at the end of SummerSlam or the night after? And an 'interim' championship that actually had time to marinate? And a month of Punk chants and anticipation? But it's fair that with all the time and effort they've invested in Punk, they need to keep it going now, especially going into their biggest show of the half-year. But why did Triple H have not one but two title matches on Raw if he had already (evidently) re-signed the world champion?

Two hour title reigns do suck, but it's not the real title anyway I suppose. Classic Cena to find a way to win a tournament he wasn't even in. Awesome match. Really good wrestling up and down Raw with a hot crowd -- the first Rey match too, and Kofi/Del Rio have good chemistry.

The Jim Ross thing is fantastic and I'm really happy for him, but with Cole sticking around the announcing will probably continue to suck. Cole picking fights with Ross and perpetually insulting him like he did tonight (the tradeoff for Vince so he can stomach bringing him back) is going to make the Smackdown announcing look like pristine ballet. But it's still cool for Ross, who proves to be unkillable once and for all since this time he really was supposed to be done done done for reals forever.

Also Ryder looked really happy. Yay. You don't need to have a hotshot Raw every week to have a good show. It's enough just to put people in positions to succeed and have a sense of momentum.

Also Triple H personally remixed Ziggler's new music. Guy is committed to this job.

It's also a chance for them to run with the original plans for Del Rio cashing in without ruining the moment in Chicago.

Wow, my opinion ticked someone off.

Okay I'm glad Mysterio got his title belt even if it was for only for 2 hours. I think Triple H booked a good show tonight and was thoughtful of him to invite CM Punk back with the cult of personality. Ryder got TV time!

Good to see the WWE reading their facebook page and giving what the fans want.

- Was Vince mad at the President for more than just airing a speech vs RAW? Way over the top stuff tonight.

- Punk looks odd in white, chicago flag gimmick or not.

- Miz apparently thought Cena lost the title to Voldemort.

- Lots of hot shotting after last week's ratings: JR return, Punk return, two biggest faces wrestling for title in the main event.

- Was expecting Cole to wrestle Eve, not Zach Attack.

It's the same one Punk used when he was ROH champ and they were running an angle similar to this one, where Punk was threatening to take the ROH belt to WWE. Considering that angle turned him into one of the biggest heels in the world, it's poetic to see things come full circle, with the current angle turning him into one of the biggest faces in the world.

Wow, the WWE just doesn't get it. People are TIRED of seeing Cena with the title. I'm sick of Cena. I'm so entirely repulsed by the sight and sound of him, it's almost enough to turn me off of WWE programming altogether. Heck, the WWE's treatment of Zack Ryder really pisses me off, too. Yeah, sure, he was on RAW tonight, but a 25 second match doesn't do anything for the man's character...but it'll be something for his Z! Youtube show.

And while it's nice to have JR back on commentary, it's pretty obvious he'll be buried each and every week working with Cole.

To hell with WWE.

The thing about Ryder tonight;

1) Triple H personally chose him as Cole's opponent.
2) Cole is still a "top heel" (after a fashion).
3) Ryder just had a new shirt released, this was a nice way to showcase it, perhaps it will sell out again.

"FOLLOW THAT!". I smell a feud for the US title possibly.

Man, the political commentary of Vince-thru-Lawler was extra-ridiculous tonight... we get it, Linda lost as a Republican, ergo Obama=bad. Sheesh.

Punk of Personality! I didn't think he'd be back on TV that fast! I guess Summerslam is Champion vs. "champion"?

We don't need a return to the "good ole days" of 10 minute HHH promos, but that one goofy, over-the-top face he made at R-Truth was great. And with Hunter in power, will we hear from the Anonymous GM? Has the Laptop been phased out?

Is JoMo healthy enough yet to be Starship Paining around like that? And is JR healthy enough to do weekly TV?

Good thing Cena isn't actually the champion and is holding a belt no one will recognize...

Liked Raw. My absurd mash up is live with content source linking here. So my cheap plug. http://faceheel.com

I liked it but didn't like the hot shot treatment of the belt like Shapiro said.

Yeah, I don't think they wanted to sit to long on CM Punk. He's hot & they hopefully will keep it that way.

They kind of had to put the title back on John Cena for now. In order to bring CM Punk back, Cena needed to be in the title picture somehow. It’s not just a Punk-Cena feud. Punk walking off with the title is the crux of this whole angle. Sure, it could easily just be segued into a “Punk returning to taunt whomever has the belt,” but I do like the dynamic of Punk following Cena around for a bit, tormenting him by reminding him that he (Cena) lost the *real* title to Punk, and he’s now just a phony…a great big phony. It’s about time for a round of good old-fashioned psychological warfare until Cena just snaps. Right now, his two biggest rivals – Punk and Rock (heh) – aren’t even, storyline-wise, with the company.

Some had suggested keeping the whole thing rolling through Twitter, YouTube, etc…but you’re still cutting a portion of your audience (mainly the kids) from staying invested in the angle by keeping Punk off TV. You’d also run the risk of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ syndrome. It felt perfectly acceptable to bring Punk back tonight, but perfectly unacceptable to have him standing at the top of the ramp with “CM PUNK” graphics lighting up all around him. (edit: Coming through the crowd or being shown in the crowd/near the top of the seating would've made it feel like he wasn't still part of the company). Wearing the commemorative t-shirt was a nice touch, though.

So, was Triple H channeling Vince or just trying to goad CRZ back into recapping? Every time HHH said “Quite frankly,” I actually visualized a little number inside parentheses following the phrase. I think we counted 9 before realizing that whole speech would’ve made a fantastic basis for a drinking game.

I did dig all the rasslin, too. Oh, and the continuity and psychology. Rey going after Miz’s right knee. Rey going after John Cena’s legs to even out the height difference. Del Rio working Kofi’s arm for the submission. I even loved that Jerry Lawler pointed out Cena hadn’t thrown a punch in his match and was sticking to just wrestling (until the 5 Knuckle Shuffle five minutes later).

Hated hated hated hated hate hate hate hate hate.

Too rushed to crown a new champion. Too rushed to have Cena fight the new champion. Too rushed to bury new champion. Too soon to bring Punk back. There was so much good stuff on this show and in the past few months, and tonight ended with me hating everything to do with this company.

A perfect time to make this post after the best six weeks of Raw in pure ages. To heaven with WWE!
Perhaps...but what a way to flush the momentum down the toilet.

From what I understand Abdulla still wrestles form time to time and I think he was even on the Legends of Wrestling PPV. He's getting extremely old though (He's got to be atleast 60). He also runs a restaruant somewhere.
