The stipulation was that if Alex Riley lost, Miz had to fire him. There's never been anything said about Riley having a WWE contract, it's always been stated that he's signed to a personal support contract by The Miz. Thus there's nothing preventing Miz from rehiring him next week. Or even nothing preventing Riley from just hanging out with the Miz for free. After all, if you're being mentored by the WWE Champion, who cares if he's paying you?

Well, fwiw, Meltzer said this morning that both Riley and McGuillicuty are being shipped back to FCW for repackaging, which doesn't seem to make a lot of sense in Riley's case, especially when they had a tailor made place for him at 'mania in the Cole/Lawler match, which is now getting out of left field participants like Swagger and the mystery ref (who Meltzer claims to know the identity of, but isn't allowed to say). Maybe what Cena said in that terrible promo was one of Vince's not so veiled messages, and they actually have decided he's what's making Miz look weak? I dunno, but it sure seemed like a weird time to write him out.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Brett DiBiase coming back from his knee injury in FCW, since I think it was he, Ted and Joe Hennig who were supposed to form a group before Brett got hurt.

They really should make the WM match a three-way with Rock, so Cena/Miz can headline Backlash. When Cena wins, Miz can whine about losing the belt in a quasi-handicap match. Cena can brag about beating Rock, and THAT should lead to next year's WM match against Taker.

Is not having a match, being a heel announcer's manager, and taking bumps for a 60-year-old really something worth giving a (blank) job for?

No way. I don't usually get on John Cena but he was very bad. He and/or Brian Gewirtz completely undermined any attempt Miz has been making to get serious and treat this like, say, the main event of Wrestlemania. I know Cena is a model employee who does what he's told but he's been main eventing wrestling for long enough that he should have better instincts about what's good and bad. Instead he's just giving Rock more material.

I think if Michaels is going to ref, they don't want HHH and Shawn in cahoots or anything. Shawn laid the groundwork for that by saying he was rooting for Triple H to win but he wasn't sure if he'd be happy if he did.

2/28/2011 RAW Recap, Part 1

YO, PICTURE THIS...

SHEAMUS AND MOST MUST-SEE CHAMP SING "DON'T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME" TO FOES.

CENA'S LYRICS AWAKEN BRAHMA BULL (SORRY, DUDE, THAT IS A BAD IDEA).

BUT A CEREBRAL ASSASSIN HATES "SIMPLE MINDS."

ALSO, YOU DO NOT ADDRESS ROCK IN THE FORM OF RAP, BOY.

There's a couple problems here. Cena was terrible and gave the Miz nothing to work with or build on. Cena was so bad that it made The Rock look kind of bad not capitalizing on this trainwreck right away and instead focusing only on last week's Cena promo.

The Miz's problem is he is only mildly annoying. He doesn't have that hook in his promos that pisses people off enough and if you are putting your associate on the line you have to come up with a more dastardly stip than Cena saying you are awesome.

At times that segment was so bad it was almost as if The Miz and Cena were writing off two totally different scripts.

The Rock's promo was good by comparison, but when he gets that emotional he really has to be live so the crowd can get amped up and he can pause at the right spots. Instead there were times when the crowd wanted to start up a 'Rocky' chant and he'd just talk right over it.

... and lastly, you are going to bust on Cena for 'not being a man' and coming at you with a rap, but you are going to reply like a man and do what ... rhyme?

Then again Lawler and Cole were the highlight of this Raw, so you know this show probably had some problems.

This RAW was particularly amoral, especially in that wonky Orton segment. I know he's the cold-blooded Viper, but even Austin or Jake Roberts (the other serpent themed grapplers of wrestling's past) never threatened paralysis and permanent institutionalization with a tinge of atheism for babyface pop consumption. It's just not something I think you want to position on your show for ten-year-olds to visibly cheer for.

Why is Randy Orton still getting cheers? He's acting as heel as can be, but he's not even a cool heel - at least to me. He might as well be Vladimir Koslov with arm tattoos. I've never seen someone so with such a bland personality get such a reaction.

If The Rock keeps on saying he loves the fans, yet only shows up via satellite, fans are going to lose interest.
He's back and here to stay and already phoning it in from his house. Not good. Wonder how many "Yabba Dabba Bitch" signs will be confiscated next week.

Any guesses on Cole's choice of ref? Jack Swagger as trainer seemed way out of left field to me.

As i said earlier in the thread, I think Swagger is there both to help split Cole away from Miz and as a way to insert JR into the match/angle.

I hope its a lot confiscated signs. Orton has always had the asshole vibe about him which leads to fans who liking cheering tweeners. I think he is getting monster pops is probably due to his longevity in the ME, a good heel in Punk and the fact that WWE fans have always liked the asshole face. Plus, his finishers are crowd pleasers. I just think the young teenager and teenagers like Orton for his anti-authority attitude and he is not Cena.

Rock will have to show up at least three times live prior to Mania. There is way too much time in between now and Mania for him to give canned promos. It worked last night due to his intensity, but I agree he can't keep doing the live remotes. The WWE kinda of put themselves in this corner. They wanted a ratings pop for sweeps, got it and now they have over a month to figure out how to keep Rock away. I would think Rock is a smart enough guy to realize he needs to be there live. Austin being there next week would at least give him someone other then Cena or Miz to talk too. It would also be fucking retarded not to have the two guys with one of the greatest rivalries of all time acknowledge each other. Rock is guest hosting Mania, so maybe have Rock give Austin something to do at Mania while pimping Tough Enough for the next night. They really need to play up Rock being guest host more. A Smackdown appearance won't hurt either.

Its all about how WWE and Rock want to continue on. He can keep giving the canned promos then save him for the Raw before Mania or have him go live the rest of the way get into something physical with Cena then go from there. To be fair, its not all on Rock even though it feels like it. HBK's promo could have been saved for another week and give the crowd at least a match. I do think we will see Rock wrestle one more time before its all said and done. Paul is right there is way too much talking even now let alone a month from now for this to be a move thing.

From winning MITB and cashing in the briefcase shortly after for the championship to being in Michael Cole's corner in 1 year. Is that up there on fastest Mania drops with King Kong Bundy going from title match against Hogan to dropping an elbow on a midget?

It's up there. If Cole starts permanently seconding Swagger after 'Mania, though, it could get him enough to heat to justify another world title program.

Of course, the fact that Swagger's at a point that he would even need someone like Cole to get him back in the main event is just sad.

Roddy Piper going from the main event of Wrestlemania to a fake boxing match at Wrestlemania 2?

Wendy Richter winning the women's title at Wrestlemania then not even being with the company by Wrestlemania 2?

Ricky Steamboat winning the Intercontinental Championship in what is widely considered to be one of the greatest matches of all time at Wrestlemania III only to lose to Greg Valentine in the first round of the tournament at Wrestlemania IV?

Booker T winning the Tag Team Championships at Wrestlemania XX (after competing for the World Championship at Wrestlemania XIX) only to be relegated to a dark battle royal at Wrestlemania 21?

Steve Austin whopping Savio Vega's ass at Wrestlemania 12 only to pass out in a pool of his own blood at Wrestlemania 13?

The boxing match had the best workrate of the card.

Nobody cares about Wendy Richter.

Steamboat-Hammer is a testament to Savage. Savage carried him in WM 3, as evidenced by the success of Savage and the failure of Steamboat in WM 4.

Booker T is black. Those people can't stay in a top position for too long or else they get uppity.

Thriple H held Austin down in WM 13 as a favor to Waltman.

Why does Orton get a reaction at all? He is one of the blandest guys to have such a large following.

Maybe they'll try for a heel turn having Rock say he loves the fans, but keeps sending in tapes.

Any guesses on Cole's choice of ref? Jack Swagger as trainer seemed way out of left field to me.

Riley is the obvious choice, but he's gone?

Cole could get cocky and have it be JR, so he could humiliate him by making him count the pin on his best bud.

Either that or Andy Kaufman will finally reveal that he did indeed fake his death.

Orton, I must admit is now among the best workers around. But Miz? at the Rumble, he had a merely adequate match with Orton, which was still a notch below what world title PPV match should be. Meanwhile Edge has a great match with Ziggler. Miz's only good matches in the last year were against Morrison and Danielson, who are each two things Miz ain't. Morrison: incredible athlete, Brianson: flat out great wrestler. Even Seamus at least looked and worked like an ass-kicker and Swagger has a background as a legit amateur. Two more qualities Miz lacks. I don't think his mic work is so revolutionary that he deserves to be WWE Champ right now. And I'm not even saying he won't get there, but if you think he's not the key factor in them feeling the Rock needed to be involved at Mania this year, I don't know what to tell you. It's not all the booking: no amount of great Miz promos or dominant wins over the next month will make him a star in the class of Cena, much less the Rock. Great booking can't accomplish that. Time and great performances will.

You seem to be saying the solution to Miz not being an afterthought is him laying out mid-carders, which it just isn't. Why not have someone lay Bryan out who Bryan will have a match with next week? Or even the week after, hyping that match on next weeks show, a three week arc! (Oh noes, pro wrestling booking! ooga booga!) They can even give that eventual match Wrestlemania applications? Then it makes sense. Miz was going to lay out Cena later, which is all anyone will remember.

I never did. I've always found him boring, never thought he was the best in the business, disliked him for years for borderline racist "jokes", but really have no real personal feelings about him or his marriage or his burials of others beyond the fact I don't like or respect his work and don't want to watch it.

Who else are they gonna cheer for? He's the only one other than Cena who they book like a star. He never jobs clean, he crushes all the heels, and he isn't made to look stupid or ineffective or weak. Fans really don't have a choice, it's him or Cena, and Cena is a cornball.
