TONIGHT: JBL pulled some strings last week to get his employee Shawn Michaels to face off against John Cena, presumably so Cena will be softened up for his match against JBL at the Royal Rumble. Plus, Kane takes on Randy Orton. Where will Kelly Kelly stand in this match? Also, CM Punk gets another crack at William Regal and the Intercontinental Title, this time, in a match where the title can change hands on a DQ. And will more Rumble match participants be announced? Let’s find out together!

Breaking news: Just before 9pm, WWE.com announced “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as the first member of the Hall-of-Fame class of 2009. We’ll get more info tonight on Raw.

-WWE Open.

-The show opened with a shot panning JBL’s limo. Inside, JBL and Shawn Michaels sat in silence. JBL tried to give Michaels somewhat of a pep talk while Shawn blankly stared straight ahead. JBL said HBK was fighting for a paycheck tonight. He told Shawn to consider this his WrestleMania. JBL then exited the limo, leaving Shawn to sit and stew inside.

-Raw Open.

-Stephanie McMahon kicked things off from Sioux City, Iowa, home of Clarence Mason, and she came to the ring. Steph talked briefly about the Rumble, then said her father returns next week. She began to say she can’t wait until her dad comes back, but Chris Jericho and his music interrupted (and evil goatee). Jericho immediately called Steph a liar. He said she was no worse (I think he meant “better”) than all the hypocrites in the crowd. He said Steph isn’t ecstatic at all about Vince coming back, she’s scared because her reign will be over. Jericho said she doesn’t have a clue about what’s going on. Steph said her father supports him but Y2J asked if he supported putting Mike Adamle in charge. He said that was a stroke of genius, because it makes Steph look competent by comparison. Steph replied that Adamle was a Shane hire. She said next week, Cena and JBL would sign the contract for their match in the ring. She said Jericho has a match tonight so he better get ready. Jericho once again said he wouldn’t lower himself to fight just anybody unless he gets a shot at the title. Steph said she’s still in charge and can take away his opportunity to talk to Vince next week, his opportunity to compete in the Rumble and she can make sure he never challenges for the title again. Jericho brushed her off saying he didn’t give a damn because he’s through with her. Steph said maybe he’d give a damn about this: YOU’RE FIRED! Good pop. Jericho looked to be in shock as Steph walked out of the ring and to the back. Interesting twist.

[Commercial Break]

-They showed what just happened vis-a-vis Jericho getting fired.

-Two well-dressed security members escorted Jericho in the backstage area and presumably out of the building.

(1) The Miz vs. Rey Mysterio
Cole announced that Miz would be in the Royal Rumble in two weeks. Miz and Rey went back-and-forth, ‘til Miz bounced Rey’s head off the top rope then pounded away in the corner and did his corner clothesline. Face-buster by Miz for two. Kick to the face by Rey, then a seated senton which Michael noted was part of Rey’s “swashbuckling style” (check your Michael Cole bingo cards for that one). Sunset flip, but Miz sat down and got two. Knee-lift into the neck-breaker was avoided by Rey, who came back to hit the 619 and the splash for the win.

Winner: Mysterio, at 3:31. Acceptable TV match. Hasn’t been a good week for Miz & Morrison going back to Friday.

Mike Knox attacked after the match. Geez, you think Rey would learn to try and pay more attention. Rey actually made a comeback though and hit a hurricanrana, which caused Burly to retreat.

-Candice Michelle was talking to CM Punk backstage about Vince’s return, but he wasn’t paying attention. He was focused on getting ready for his IC Title match, which is right now. Well, after the break.

[Commercial Break]

-Mr. McMahon returns next week; we got some clips of Vince I believe from his DVD, mostly about his announcer days.

(2) CM Punk vs. William Regal- Intercontinental Championship Match; If Regal is DQ’d, title changes hands
Some mat and chain wrestling with some pinning combinations mixed in early on. Regal got Punk in the corner but backed away, making sure he was following the rules. Punk pushed Regal into the corner and hit a high knee, then an ugly bulldog out of the corner for two. As Punk was fighting out, he was on his knees and punched Regal low- apparently too low for referee John Cone, who called for the bell.

Winner: Regal, via DQ, at 1:58. WWE hates its fans. But obviously, there will be a conclusion (and likely a good match) out of this feud.

-Mickie James was talking about the snow with Cody Rhodes. Rhodes put down Iowa when Sim Snuka and Manu came up to him. James left and Snuka wanted to know what was up with Rhodes leaving them last week. Rhodes in turn wanted to know why they’re taking it so personally. He said if they were in his shoes, they’d do the same things. Manu gave Rhodes (and Orton, if he’s watching the show) fair warning that they’re coming after Orton tonight. Snuka said they brought some backup, someone who feels the same way they do, and is also a 2nd generation wrestler. Ted Dibiase? D.H. Smith?

-Kane vs. Randy Orton is still to come tonight. Also, Shawn Michaels takes on John Cena.

[Commercial Break]

-Regal and Layla were walking backstage when Todd Grisham and his mic came upon him. He asked Regal if he was satisfied with the outcome. Regal talked as if things with Punk were over and said he was very satisfied. But Stephanie McMahon was right there and said she ISN’T satisfied. So next week, we’ll have a no-DQ match between the two to settle things.

-Cole and Lawler threw it to a video package on Stone Cold Steve Austin. Man, the music made it seem like he died. Well, at least the first half. Then the music was pumped up. The video ended with the announcement that Austin would be inducted into the Hall-of-Fame the night before WrestleMania. Lawler said he’d be first in line to buy tickets. Poor guy- WWE wouldn’t even let him in as an employee?

-Another Michaels & JBL segment backstage where they discussed Jericho’s firing. Shawn said if this is his WrestleMania, he doesn’t need JBL in his corner.

[Commercial Break]

-Another “McMahon returns” moment: His “You’re Fired!” lines.

-Next week, finally, Mike Knox faces Rey Mysterio one-on-one.

(3) Kane vs. Randy Orton
Rhodes came out with Orton. He was looking over his shoulder (Rhodes, not Orton). Kane took it to Orton early on. That included Orton being clotheslined over the top and to the outside. Break time.

[Commercial Break]

Orton had Kane in his trademark chin-lock out of break. Hard right hand right to the bald head of Kane. Kane came back with an uppercut. Orton, though, had time to recover and get a kick to the head. Garvin stomp by Randy for two. I believe a forearm to the head by Orton, though the camera made it looked like he barely touched him. Another chin-lock. Kane broke out with a belly-to-back suplex. Off the ropes, Orton ran right into a big boot. Couple of corner clotheslines then a sidewalk slam by The Big Red Machine. Kane grabbed Orton for a chokeslam but Orton went after the knee. That got him out of it. Kane countered an RKO and went to the top. Orton grazed him with a dropkick as Kane was coming down. That got a three-count, though the announcers seemed to think Kane got his shoulder up after two.

Winner: Orton, at 8:47. Not particularly pleasing to the eye. It did appear Kane got up before three, but it was close.

Manu and Snuka came out and asked Cody if they were with or against him. They brought out their backup, Ted Dibiase. The three of them walked to the ring. They surrounded the ring. Dibiase got in and you can see this turn a mile away. Everyone got in the ring, even Cody. Orton was surrounded. Orton, Dibiase and Rhodes teamed up and went after Manu and Snuka. There it is folks. A beat-down on Snuka and Manu ensued by The Legacy. Orton directed traffic and led the assault. Rhodes did his new finisher on Snuka. Some people were cheering this. Dibiase gave Manu the Million Dollar Dream/Russian Leg-Sweep combo. They replayed what just happened.

-Cole sent it to a video of Jericho getting fired from earlier tonight.

-Grisham was backstage with John Cena. Cena interrupted Grisham trying to tell him about the Royal Rumble. He said he knows about the Royal Rumble and he used some superlatives to describe it. He said anything can happen and has happened. He said he has to defend his title against JBL. Cena said JBL bought himself the best because Shawn Michaels stands in his corner. He complimented Michaels and said tonight is Michaels’ WrestleMania.

[Commercial Break]

(4) Jillian Hall & Beth Phoenix vs. Kelly Kelly & Melina
During her entrance, one of the photographers attacked Melina and it was Rosa Mendes. The girls all started brawling in the aisle after Rosa was taken away by security. That included Melina getting thrown into the barricade by Beth. Beth took one of the cameras and took pictures of Melina while trash talking her as Melina was holding her neck in pain.

Winners: No Match.

-Tonight, Cena faces HBK.

[Commercial Break]

-We got to see Vince getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as part of the “Mr. McMahon Returns” videos.

-Lawler and Cole previewed the Royal Rumble. Very rarely do I recognize the PPV theme songs (or like them for that matter), but I did for this show, as it’s Kevin Rudolf’s “Let it Rock.”

-Orton and Rhodes thanked Dibiase and Orton said they proved that they want to be part of the Legacy. Dibiase said the past is the past and apparently all three are in the Royal Rumble match. Orton said that’s correct, but there can only be one winner. They all stood around looking at each other.

-A line was formed outside Steph’s office, with Jamie Noble heading the line, followed by Dolph Ziggler, Goldust and Cryme Tyme. Santino Marella walked out and exclaimed “yes!” Apparently, he got the spot in the Rumble that they were all after. I’m assuming, as they never really said. Ziggler introduced himself to Noble and Cryme Tyme asked for someone to slap him.

-Shawn Michaels, followed by JBL, was walking backstage, coming to the ring for his match which is next.

[Commercial Break]

-A trailer for “Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia” aired.

-Next week, in a No-DQ match, William Regal defends his I.C. title against CM Punk.

(4) Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena
Cena extended his hand for a handshake prior to the match and HBK shook it. They took a break before the match started.

[Commercial Break]

The bell rang as soon as they returned from break (OK, after a Royal Rumble graphic). Chain wrestling amid a few tepid “you can’t wrestle” chants aimed toward Cena. Michaels shoved Cena at one point and a forearm to the face put Michaels down. The two separated and it looked like Michaels was deep in thought. Cena gave a hard back elbow, then a hip-toss to Michaels. Shawn tried Sweet Chin Music, but Cena saw it coming. HBK didn’t give a clean break in the corner, instead chopping Cena in the chest. Cena turned it around with some punches and HBK did the same with more chops. Hard into the buckle went Michaels, then a big back body-drop by Cena. He clotheslined HBK over the top and Michaels writhed in pain on the outside. Shawn laid some knees to the face of Cena back in the ring, then stomped him in the face. More chops from Shawn. Cena came back with some clotheslines and Michaels did his flip well in the corner. Modified bulldog by Cena got two. Shawn reversed a suplex and Michaels locked in a figure-four. Cena looked to reverse and he finally did. Cena did his flip face-buster, but missed his leg-drop off the top rope and Shawn hooked in the Crossface. Cena was able to power to his feet while Shawn was still in the hold, but he ended up going back down. Cena finally got to the bottom rope and broke the hold. Cena got kicked out of the ring by Michaels as they went to break.

[Commercial Break]

Cena was on the attack after break, working on the back of HBK. Cena tried to get Michaels up for the move formerly called the FU, but then applied a bear-hug. Michaels broke it and it a couple back elbows to the side of John’s head. Shawn again broke the hold. He hit the ropes and nailed Cena with a flying forearm. Cena avoided a second atomic drop and hit a couple flying shoulder tackles. Michaels fell back into a pinning combination during a bodyslam attempt by Cena. He got two. Shawn went to the top, where Cena met him. Cena tried a Throwback but Michaels powerbombed Cena for two. HBK to the top, but he missed an elbowdrop. Cena went to the top and hit that leg-drop with Cena bent over. He needs to take that out of his repertoire. Cena did the “you can’t see me” to JBL, but delivered the five-knuckle shuffle to Michaels. HBK countered the Throwback with a DDT for two. Elbow off the top by HBK, who then set up for the Superkick. Cena dodged it and hit the Throwback (not yet called by Cole). Cena was still selling injury for a second afterward, made the cover and Michaels kicked out. Out of nowhere, HBK hit the superkick while Cena picked him up. He crawled a few inches to make the cover and only got two. Both men were down. “Let’s go Cena/HBK” chants were dueling as the men got to their feet. Michaels rolled up Cena for two but Cena locked in the STF. It was right in front of JBL, who looked sternly at Shawn. Michaels reached for the ropes and finally got them. Lawler accused JBL of leaning into the ropes making it closer for HBK, but I don’t buy it. Michaels had some words for JBL and HBK backed into the Throwback. He got out once again and hit the Superkick for the win.

Winner: Michaels, at 24:45. Solid match, worthy of a PPV main-event probably.

After the match, Michaels quickly walked to the back without JBL. Yeah, I guess on replay, JBL was slightly pushing the ropes with one hand. Still don’t think it made a great difference. JBL was in the ring, standing over a fallen Cena as the show ended.

I really expect JBL to pull the ropes away, not slightly push them in.

Psst, Cole. Wrestlemania 25 is not the "twenty-fifth anniversary" of Wrestlemania. Since Wrestlemania II was the first anniversary, Wrestlemania XXV is the twenty-fourth anniversary. Thank you.

I don't know what is technically right now that I think about it, but the company has been promoting this as a 25th anniversary

Okay then. Psst, WWE. This is not the twenty-fifth anniversary of Wrestlemania. It's the twenty-fifth year of it, but only the twenty-fourth anniversary.

If you are trying to establish a new heel faction by using a beatdown, perhaps beating down someone people actually gives a damn about would have drowned out that damn cricket.

Something tells me that Cena/JBL at the Rumble will not be quite as good as Cena/Michaels. I thought that was the best one they've had together, even better than the two from '07.

I really liked it, it was all NWO beating down the Nasty Boys and Bootie Man when they tried to join. Plus Orton's whole m.o. while Legacy-building has been punking out the geeks and geeking out the punks.

Still has a racism tone to the beating. Three white guys screw around and stomp out the non-whites of the group.

So where does this leave Manu and Sim? I don't believe even together that they would garner enough fan interest to get people behind them. I was kinda hoping when Manu was outed originally he would form a Perfect Strangers-like tag team with Umaga.

Talk about how a good main event saves an otherwise lackluster show. Although I felt this edition of Michaels/Cena was the worst of the three (too many restholds), Cena actually did his part of the carrying. No one seems to bring out the best in Cena like Michaels does. I'm getting hooked onto this JBL/Michaels drama for the moment where Michaels snaps, and then how that segues into Wrestlemania.

The Jericho firing is rather interesting, but I'm thinking Vince brings him back next week and turns uber heel in the process. And then we labour through another McMahon v McMahon feud. Haven't seen one of those in like, what, 3 years?

Regal/Punk was pretty shit-tastic again, but next week's Raw is from Punk's hometown so you can see where it is going. And if another shitty finish there finally leads to a no-holds-barred type match at the Rumble for the IC title, then I'm all for it.

I can't recognize all of the WWE referees, but would the official in the Orton-Kane happen to be someone whose dad was a referee/wrestler?

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death!

Well, gee, they could had said that while I was trying to figure out what the hell was going on with the 'blown' finish. It felt out of place, as once they went to The Legacy beatdown on Oceanic people, they never brother mentioning it again the rest of the show. Then again, it's par on the course for this ridiculously confusing angle between Orton/Kane/Kelly Kelly.

HBK/Cena was a really good, solid match to watch. I was rather surprised that the WWE had it go nearly 25 minutes, but I like it. It's definitely something I would like to see more of.

Dibiase bought himself Chris Masters' shoulders. He looks awkward.

Cens sold those superkicks like he had been tasered, and the final one looked particularly nasty. That was a good, good match. The booking of this angle is solid. I wish more had been made of Shawn's reaction to JBL manipulating the ropes.

Geemoney = Man, the music made it seem like he died.

The Lovely Mrs. Tracker said the exact same thing.

Is it too much to ask for GM Jericho next week?
