TONIGHT: Raw ushers in 2009 with the following matches: Glamarella taking on Goldust and Melina; Kelly Kelly squaring off against Jillian Hall; CM Punk challenging William Regal for the IC Title; and Rey Mysterio & Kofi Kingston facing John Morrison & The Miz (in a non-title match, I believe). Plus, more Royal Rumble hype and possibly some Royal Rumble match entrants named? Letís find out!

-WWE Open.

-Clips of HBK and his history working for JBL aired, starting with Armageddon and ending with the incident last week.

-Randy Orton & Chris Jericho were in the ring, neither looking too happy nor dressed to compete. They wanted to complain about last weekís match. Jericho said itís supposed to be every man for hisself in a fatal four-way and clearly it wasnít. The two apparently filed a formal protest, saying that JBL nor HBK should fight John Cena at the Rumble. Orton said he and Jericho should face off tonight, with the winner taking on Cena at the PPV. Jericho called JBL & HBK corrupt and under-handed. JBL then came out amid his usual pomp and circumstance. Actually, both HBK and JBL stepped out of the limo. JBL scoffed at their protest and told them to lose with some dignity. He said they wouldíve done the same thing had they had the resources. Jericho took the time to take digs at Michaels. HBK said what allows him to sleep at night is knowing Orton and Jericho wonít be getting a title shot. Orton called HBK a weak, pathetic sellout. Stephanie McMahon came out- full-body camera shot alert! Steph said she read Orton & Jerichoís complaint, but said HBK did not lie down for JBL, therefore the decision stands. She said Orton & Jericho will be entered into the Royal Rumble match. Y2J implored Steph to leave HBK out of the Rumble, lest he poison it. JBL said HBK will be in his corner for his title match and thatíll be his only function. Steph seemed to take that into consideration and made HBK & Cena against Orton & Jericho for tonight. Awesome job by everybody here.

-Tonight, Punk challenges Regal for the IC Title.

[Break]

(1) Goldust & Melina vs. Santino Marella & Beth Phoenix- Mixed Tag Match
They skipped the best part of Goldust- his entrance. Bethís super-fan was at ringside. Beth headbutted Melina down and worked her arm as Marella made a blind tag. Melina slapped Santino, then Goldust came in and did the same. Goldust showed some good energy here. Beth broke up a pin attempt and the bizarre one clotheslined Santino over the top. Melina came in and went to the top, hitting some sort of face-buster on Beth, then made a jack-knife pin for the win.

Winners: Melina & Goldust, at 3:18. Entertaining match.

Post-match, Rosa Mendes attacked Melina. As she was being led away by security, Melina went after her and got in a few shots.

-Todd Grisham was backstage with CM Punk. Punk was ďtotally stokedĒ about tonight. He talked about the history of the IC Title and also brought up Regal beating him for the King of the Ring last year. That match is next.

[Break]

(2) CM Punk vs. William Rega- Intercontinental Title Match
Punk took Regal down with a few kicks and got a couple quick pin attempts. Regal was befuddled and took a break, using Layla to shield himself from Punk. He caught Punk coming back in the ring with a kick to the jaw. Full-nelson on Punk as Cole noted Regal resolved to wake up 30 minutes earlier every day so he can despise people more. Wow, Cole made a funny! Punk got Regal up for the GTS, but Regal grabbed the ref and held on, drawing a DQ.

Winner: Punk, by DQ, at 3:57. Criminally short.

Steph got on the Titan-Tron and said Punk will get a re-match and this time, if heís DQíd, Regal loses the title.

-Coming up tonight, Cena & HBK against Jericho & Orton.

[Break]

-JBL was talking to HBK backstage. JBL talked about having HBK attack or allowing Cena to be attacked tonight in their match. Bradshaw said itís about getting himself to WrestleMania as World Champion. He told HBK he would be on the winning team, but more importantly, have financial security.

-Randy Orton was backstage with Sim Snuka and Cody Rhodes. He told them that they passed phase one last week, and phase two is another set of matches tonight. Manu walked up and asked for another chance. He brought up that even Orton lost last week. Rnady took offense to that and brow-beat Manu. He said Manu will never be a part of his group and he never wants to see his face again. Rhodes & Snuka walked away from Manu, who was left fuming.

-Dolph Ziggler introduced himself to Mickie James backstage as Kofi Kingston and Rey Mysterio passed them, headed to the ring for their tag match next.

[Break]

(3) The Miz & John Morrison vs. Rey Mysterio & Kofi Kingston
The heels did some mic work, noting they were insulted by the boos from the crowd. The chyron showed that Rey and Kofi would be in the Rumble match in three weeks. I wonder why theyíre not doing Rumble qualifying matches anymore?

The crowd got behind Kofi early. Cross-body and arm-drag sent Miz to the outside. Kofi faked a dive onto Miz, which the former reality star bought hook, line and sinker. Time for a break.

[Break]

Rey fought away from Miz and tagged in Kofi. Kingston took out both men but was pushed off the top rope by Morrison. The former Johnny Nitro tagged in and worked Kingstonís knee. The heels worked Kofi over but came close to being disqualified a few times in doing so. Kofi managed a dropkick off the second rope and both he and Miz were down. Hot tag to Rey, who took it to Morrison. Morrison got a wheelbarrow-like face-buster for two. Mysterio hit a unique move off the top. Kofi took Miz over the top with a cross-body. 619 on Morrison, then Rey fought off Miz, but the distraction allowed Morrison to kick Rey in the chest as Mysterio came off the top. That was all she wrote.

Winners: Miz & Morrison, at 11:54. About what youíd expect from these four, and thatís a good thing.

After the match, Mike Knox attacked Rey. Cole suggested Knox was embarrassed over his loss last week.

-HBK was approached by John Cena backstage. Cena asked HBK if he was fighting two or three guys tonight and wanted to know what to expect. HBK asked him what history tells him will happen.

[Break]

(4) Kelly Kelly vs. Jillian Hall
Jillianís song of choice tonight was ďWhen the Saints go marching in.Ē Apparently, this match stems from Hall being eliminated in the diva battle royal last week by Kelly. Kelly was suckered back into the ring by Jillian, who attacked after holding the ropes for her. Jillianís offense was mostly hair-based. It was all Jillian as the crowd (well, some of them) got behind Kelly. Figuratively. Flying head-scissors by Kelly, then a cross-body of the top for two. Victory roll was countered by Jillian into a pin of her own, which got two. Handspring elbow by Jillian was blocked by Kellyís foot, then she leg-dropped the back of Jillianís neck for the three.

Winner: Kelly, at 4:23. No particularly impressive, but not as bad as it couldíve been.

Jillian attacked Kelly after the match until Kane came out. He got a mic and said the truth finally came out last week that Kelly was protecting Orton. He said being rejected doesnít feel good, does it? Kane said next week, he goes back to what makes him feel good: Eviscerating people, starting with Orton, whom he has a match with next Monday.

-Orton & Y2J take on Cena & HBK later tonight.

[Break]

-Cole and Lawler plugged the upcoming edition of Smackdown on Friday night.

(5) Cody Rhodes & Sim Snuka vs. Cryme Tyme
Snuka got a small package on JTG for two as they went back and forth. Shad tagged in and ran over Sim. Snuka kicked JTG in the head and tagged in Cody. Snuka dropped JTG back-first on the apron as the refís back was turned. He tagged back in and continued the legacy of offense for the heels in this match. Sorry, thatíll be the only one. Back-breaker by JTG and both men made tags. Shad took out both Cody & Sim, but missed a shoulder in the corner. JTG was there to save him, tagging himself in and getting a sunset flip on Cody for two. In the end, Rhodes hit a Roll of the Dice for the win.

Winners: Rhodes & Snuka, at 5:23. I feel like that finisher is becoming like the Downward Spiral in that everyone is using it. Match was just OK. The Legacy were not particularly impressive.

-JBL walked out of Stephanieís office with a smile on his face. Whatís up his sleeve?

[Break]

-A Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia preview aired.

-Orton congratulated Rhodes backstage for the win, then kicked Snuka out of the group. Sim didnít understand, saying only one person could get the pin in a tag match. Orton said thatís exactly it. He wanted to see who the weak link was. He asked Codyís opinion and Rhodes said all he knows is that he won the match. Then he walked away.

-Santino and Beth were in Stephís office; she apparently has banned Rosa Mendes from WWE events. Santino said you canít blame her for being attracted to him. Jericho walked in as Beth dragged Santino out by his hair. Jericho wanted to know why JBL was coming out of his office but Steph refused to say. Jericho said not only did he send a protest to Steph, but he sent one to Vince as well. While warming up, Y2J informed Steph that he received a call from Vinceís office saying that the man will be back on Raw in two weeks. Jericho said then weíd see whose show this really is.

-John Cena was walking backstage, headed to the ring for his match, which is next.

[Break]

-Next week, CM Punk gets a re-match against William Regal for the Intercontinental Belt.

(6) Randy Orton & Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels & John Cena
Cena & Jericho started the match off and Cena got a head-lock take-over. HBK tagged himself in and it looked like he was supposed to come close to superkicking Cena, but there was quite a distance between them. Then they were supposed to both clothesline Jericho over the top, but Cena didnít get any of Jericho. JBL walked out to get a closer look as the show went to break.

[Break]

HBK suplexed out of an Orton head-lock as JBL has gone back to the back. Cena tagged in and hit some shoulderblocks and a fist-drop. He got Orton up for the FU, but Orton raked his face. HBK, who had been in to attack Jericho, got up in the FU by a blinded Cena. HBK got out and had some words with Cena. The ref tried to get HBK out of the ring, allowing the heels to do some damage. Cena managed to get Jericho up for an FU, but Y2J turned it into a DDT. Orton came in and stomped Cena. Jericho had a sleeper on Cena and HBK did extend his hand to try to tag in. Cena finally powered out, but couldnít do anything offensively. Cena fought off Jericho on the top and leg-dropped him. Both men were down. Orton came in before Cena could make a tag. He finally made the tag and Shawn hit some vintage HBK offense on Y2J. Jericho got his knees up on a top-rope elbow attempt. Orton broke up a pin and Cena came and got him some. HBK superkicked Orton and Jericho then glared at Cena and went for the pin.

Winners: HBK & Cena, at 15:54. Good tag match with some intriguing angles.

-Backstage with Todd Grisham, JBL said HBK looked good tonight, but weíll see how good he looks next week when he faces John Cena. And to make sure he maintains integrity, JBL said heíd be in Shawnís corner.

Poor Chris Jericho. Unless I missed it, he's the only wrestler who didn't get to use a "vintage" move according to Michael Cole.

What was the 50-cent-word that Jericho used in the opening promo? He's trying to outdo vintage Raven when it comes to SAT vocabulary in wrestling...

Stephanie looked lovely this evening...OMG her legs still exist!

Punk remembers continuity!

And now everytime Cole says Orton is a "viper," I keep thinking that "the viper is coming. Five seventy five." (some of you will get that, I'm sure)

So the only reason Orton started the group was to hang out more with Cody Rhodes? No wonder he turned down Kelly Kelly! Amirite!

Wow, that Regal/Punk match was shit-tastic. Even Jillian and Kelly Kelly got more time. All that buildup and that tourney comes down to a 4-minute DQ? The crowd was right to shit all over it. I know there's a rematch next week, and it will presumably get more time, but this was just a waste of an opportunity.

I (foolishly) thought they were building up the IC belt again, and that the Regal/Punk match would be at the RR. Perhaps a rematch still will be, but until I know for sure, boo! We won't take that belt seriously until they do.

My problems with HBK/JBL aside, Shawn has been in maybe the 4 best WWE feuds of 2008: Flair, Batista, Jericho, and JBL. That's quite a year.

With Batista now out of the picture, and so many other big matches already blown in the last few months, I really don't see what is on the horizon for WM 25. That's cool. Could JBL actually beat Cena for the belt and Shawn somehow win the RR? At this point, it doesn't seem unreasonable, especially if we get HHH/Taker, which you KNOW would go on last.

As the man who made 10 minute time limit draws for the TV Title a staple, Regal really needs to use the rules next week. While a DQ loses him the belt, nothing was said of what happens should Regal be counted out of the Ring.

I don't know, the match ups seem pretty obvious to me. Rumor is Christian is being brought in to feud with Jeff and he'll lose the title to Edge. Edge will probably wrestle Triple H. HBK gets revenge on JBL, leaving Cena, Orton and Jericho to fight for the Raw title. The only big question is who does that leave for UT. I'd like to see UT and Jericho but it's probably more likely they book UT/Kozlov and try and book it monster vs. monster.

The writing continues to be intriguing stuff.

Kane's talk with Kelly was wonderful. The crowd ate up the match announcement too which now has more momentum than any Orton/Kane match has a right to.

So, Sim/Manu vs. Legacy? It has to be bigger than Orton and Rhodes, right?

I agree that Steph looks gorgeous these days. But I am not looking forward to Vince's return. I worry he'll get involved in JBL/HBK.

Huzzah. I can totally see that happening just that way, and no longer look forward to the match. Surely, Steph will get on the screen after that one and say, "NEXT week...". As if the "match" wasn't bad enough, Layla's facial expressions were incredibly worse (right up there with Sim's and Manu's).

Cena did an stellar job at the end of the show, applauding Michaels but at the same time making sure he was at least one leg's length away at all times.

I've been waiting for weeks for Jericho to lay into HBK for his recent turn, and he didn't disappoint. He looked so happy to see Michaels as a bitch, but pissed off to high hell at the same time being made a fool of when he was right all along. This is really one of the best wrestling stories in forever.

Until I see Christian on TV, I wouldn't start booking WM matches around him. The rest of your ideas are pretty reasonable, event though Edge/HHH was one of the big matches I was saying they already blew a few months ago. Can't imagine they would do another 3 way for the Raw title for the 2nd year in a row, though. Especially with 2 of the same 3 guys.

Has Kozlov been pinned? An undefeated Kozlov against Taker at WM wouldn't be bad. Whatever keeps Taker from winning the belt 3 years in a row.

Also, for those saying Steph was fat, and not being filmed from the waist up for that reason, last night proved otherwise. She looked good. Not being a waif does not make you fat.

Manu in his street clothes was hilarious.

It's always weird when a former world champion is asked to put over a lesser title in a promo. I mean, once Stone Cold or HHH won the big WWE belt, you never heard them gushing over the prestige of the IC belt, right?

Note: I see here this my post #619. To celebrate, there'll be no mention of Rey Mysterio.

I'll say it: Orton booted the minorities out of Legacy. DiBiase will be back in and thank Orton for kicking him. Then it'll be Orton, Rhodes and DiBiase as the Legacy: three young, crew cut, ripped up guys in tiny trunks with just a hint of the gay.

I liked Stephanie's speech after Regal got DQ'd: "I will not allow the first title match of 2009 to end on a disqualification." And she did anyway, because she didn't restart the match. Way to lay down the law, Steph.

Melina jumping the barrier to go after Rosa Mendez was awesome. Don't fuck with Melina. Santino's defenses of Rosa Mendez *obviously* means she was the mystery person he was on the cell phone with months ago. Santino's got something going on the side.

If Cole starts referring to Orton as the "Viper of Legacy" a la Batista as the "Animal of Evolution", I'll throw up in my mouth.

Parts of the upper-deck had that black tarp stuff. I guess they(WWE) did not want you to see the empty seats.

Off-air, Mickie did the kiss cam, they threw a bunch of T-Shirts, Jericho vs Cena Street fight for title(Post Raw) only lasted like 3 minutes with Cena winning. Yes Tix still remain unsold for WM25, Please buy buy buy! Travel packages are available.
