TONIGHT: The search for a #1 Contender to the World Heavyweight Title begins with four one-on-one matches, where the winners will face off next week to determine John Cena’s opponent for the Royal Rumble. The matches tonight feature Kane taking on Shawn Michaels, JBL facing Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho challenging CM Punk and Batista (if healthy enough) going toe-to-toe with Randy Orton. I see....well....ONE good match in there! Let’s get rolling!

-WWE Open.

-Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix were backstage, and Santino addressed the camera. He had some harsh words for the fans and them having fun at his expense. He said he has a secret. He said he wants children to pay attention. It’s a secret about Santa Claus. Beth asked him if he really wanted to do this. He told her to shut up her face. As he was about to tell it, John Cena interrupted. Cena said Santino has hated Santa since he never got he pink Barbie Doll house he asked for. Santino said Cena has a big mouth. He told Cena to pick a partner to face Glamarella tonight. John Cena looked at Goldust, standing offstage. He wanted to be picked, but Santino said it had to be someone with ovaries. “Rats,” said Goldust. So Cena has to pick a diva. Santino said when Glamarella wins, he will tell the secret of Santa Claus.

-Raw Open.

-Kane came out to his music and was followed closely behind by Kelly Kelly. They showed what happened last week between those two lovebirds. Kane took the mic from ring announcer Justin Roberts prior to the match and said he was politely asked by Stephanie McMahon to issue an apology to Kelly Kelly for what he did last week. He did so, but I didn’t get the feeling that he meant it. He told her that she should apologize to him for leading him on then lying to him. He said someday she’d regret not telling him the truth. Then HBK’s music hit and he came out as Kane’s opposition.

(1) Kane vs. Shawn Michaels- Winner Advances To World Title #1 Contender Match Next Week
HBK was his usual giddy self before the match. Lots of heat early on for this one as HBK started things with some chops. Now that I think about it, they ARE in Canada so the chants were “You Screwed Bret.” Low dropkick from Kane for two. HBK worked out of a chinlock and hit an atomic drop to a lot of boos. Corner clothesline by Kane. He got two on the subsequent pin attempt. Michaels countered a pin attempt with the Crossface, which Kane turned into a side-slam for a near-fall. Kane, to the top, hit his flying clothesline. Michaels countered another chokeslam, pushed Kane into the corner and hit Sweet Chin Music for the win.

Winner: Michaels, at 5:33. Not a lot to it. A basic, no-frills match.

-A graphic was shown with all four matches set for tonight, with Michaels shown as advancing.

[Commercial Break]

-They showed the Skyline of Toronto, then threw it to a video package of what happened with Batista and Randy Orton last week.

(2) Kofi Kingston vs. Manu
Kofi did an inset interview giving a shout-out to his friends and family and a Happy Holidays. Umaga and his “rugged style” (TM Michael Cole) got the better of Kingston at the outset. Jaw-breaker countered Manu’s offense and he tried to make his comeback. Kofi did a unique kick on a Manu charge. Cross-body landed by Kofi. Kofi slipped on his “boom, boom, boom” thing and almost fell backward on his ass. Kofi leapt into Manu’s arms and Manu adjusted for a Samoan drop, but Kofi crucifix rolled Manu up for three.

Winner: Kofi, at 3:21. A bit choppy and not too smooth. I thought Manu could’ve used the win moreso than Kofi.

-John Cena was shown talking to Kelly Kelly backstage with no audio. They were both smiling and they parted ways after a handshake....does Cena have his partner for tonight?

[Commercial Break]

-Backstage, Sim Snuka seemed to be trying to convince Randy Orton to let him into Team Priceless. Cody Rhodes and Manu walked up to them and Orton said he didn’t want to hear it from them. He told Snuka they’d talk later and said they could use a new member. Manu and Snuka stared each other down until the former Deuce walked away.

-Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler discussed Shawn Michaels joining forces with JBL. They then threw it to the latest DX commercial, after Lawler reminded us that these were filmed before HBK fell on hard times. It was the same one that aired on Smackdown this past week. They plugged some WWE DVDs as well as the requisite DX merchandise.

-CM Punk and Shawn Michaels were talking backstage, at first it sounded like what happened on the trip overseas for Tribute to the Troops, and then Punk switched gears and brought up the possibility of fighting HBK next week. Triple H barged in and said he and HBK need to talk. Triple H said Michaels has been avoiding his calls and avoiding him so he needed to come here and say it to his face. Triple H asked why Shawn didn’t come to him. HBK said their friendship would never be the same again if he asked for help. HHH told Shawn not to let pride bring him down and Shawn replied that he needs to get himself out of this situation. Michaels said he doesn’t want anyone’s help and for HHH to trust him, as he knows what he’s doing. Triple H told him he hopes he does know what he’s doing. Good segment.

[Commercial Break]

-Jillian was in the ring singing some Christmas tunes, with Layla standing next to her. Finally the faces interrupted.

(3) Jillian Hall & Layla vs. Melina & Mickie James
The faces had fun on their way to the ring. Does that mean they don’t hate each other anymore? William Regal was on commentary for this match. Regal called Layla his “lady-friend.”

Layla’s gut-wrench suplex was countered into an arm-drag. That took place in slow-motion, I think. Dropkick to Layla, who was on her knees. Mickie fought off Jillian, but Layla distracted the ref and Mickie took a dangerous fall to the outside, pushed off the top by Jillian. Layla went for a pin in the ring to no avail, as Mickie was holding her knee in pain. Jillian kicked away at Mickie in the corner. Mickie monkey-flipped Jillian and made the lukewarm tag to Melina. She had quite the attire on this evening. Another gut-wrench try and Jillian botched this one even worse than Layla. Melina hit her finisher but Layla interfered. Mickie fought her off and Jillian landed a face-buster for two. Mickie broke it up and knocked Layla off the apron. Melina landed the Code Red (not Cobra’s arm-breaker from WCW) and got the pin.

Winners: Mickie & Melina, at 3:57. Bowling-shoe ugly. I’ve already got Jillian and Layla as leading contenders in the RSPW Worst Tag-Team of the Year Award.
-Later tonight, John Cena and a partner face Glamarella.

-Next, it’s JBL and Rey Mysterio where the winner moves on for the chance to face John Cena at the Rumble.

[Commercial Break]

(4) Rey Mysterio vs. JBL- Winner Advances To World Title #1 Contender Match Next Week
No Mike Knox in this match- Cole said Stephanie has given Knox the night off. JBL ran right over Mysterio with a shoulderblock, then stepped on his hand. He threw some hard forearms to the back of Rey Rey. He put out the cigarette on Rey’s back, but couldn’t hit the powerbomb. Rey set up for a 619, but JBL moved. Rey landed on him on the outside, the perfect time to go to break.

[Commercial Break]

JBL had the best of Rey until he charged Mysterio in the corner and ate a boot. Fall-away slam by JBL as he caught Rey in mid-air. Abdominal stretch by JBL. Back-to-back moves used by Razor Ramon in his heyday. Rey went for a couple of quick pinning combinations to no avail, and JBL met him with a hard clothesline. Crowd began to get into the match here. Layfield dropped a number of elbows on Rey that only got him a two-count. “You can’t wrestle” chants for JBL, even though he’s doing well in this match. Rey came back until JBL grabbed him by the tights and tossed him out of the ring like a missile. Ouch. JBL was ready to win by count-out, but Rey JUST made it in. JBL argued with referee John Cone about Rey’s feet being outside the ropes on a pin try. Short-arm clothesline by JBL. Bradshaw toyed with Rey, then hit another clothesline. Rey kicked out again though. Rey fought out of a Torture Rack, but ran right into a sleeper. Jaw-breaker to counter, and a sleeper of his own. This would be a perfect time to win with that to give that move some more credibility. But it was not to be. Seated Senton by Rey, then a headscissor take-over. That led into a bulldog for two. Off the ropes, and Rey ran into a big boot from JBL. Only two again. JBL tried a fallaway slam to send Rey outside the ring, but Rey countered with a tornado DDT and got two. Ezniguiri, then JBL got in position for the 619. Out of nowhere, Shawn Michaels came out and covered JBL. He pulled JBL out of the ring and slapped him as hard as he could. That brought about a DQ.

Winner: JBL by DQ, at 12:28. I really dug this match and although I would’ve liked JBL losing then taking HBK’s spot next week, this made sense too. Of course, the DQ should be used at the ref’s discretion, especially when it was obvious HBK did this so JBL could advance.

-They showed the updated graphic of the matches for this week and next.

-A behind-the-scenes look at Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia aired.

-Still to come tonight, CM Punk faces Chris Jericho and next, it’s Batista vs. Randy Orton.

[Commercial Break]

-Randy Orton came out for his match. After he made his entrance, referee Aaron “Goose” Mahoney told Justin Roberts that Batista was unable to compete and that Randy Orton is therefore the winner. Orton said nothing was as personally satisfying as when he kicked Batista in the skull last week. He said he won his first World Title in this very arena, but the next week, Batista turned on him. He said he has dreamed about kicking Batista in the skull for the past four years. Last week, Orton said, Christmas came early. He rhetorically asked Batista how it feels to have his career cut short and not face Cena at the Rumble. Orton said Batista is right back to where he started: Taking a backseat to Orton. “RKO, RKO” chants from the crowd. Orton said the next time Batista sees him, he’ll once again be World Champion.

-Once again, the updated graphic was shown, with one match to go.

[Commercial Break]

-Backstage, Dolph Ziggler introduced himself to Kelly Kelly, who was primping for her presumed match. She turned back around when she was tapped on the shoulder again. “I get it, you’re....” But when she turned around, Miz and Morrison were staring her in the face. Awesome. Miz was obviously pissed about last week and even mentioned their history in ECW. Miz insinuated Cena is Kelly’s boyfriend, but she said she’s just his tag partner. Miz wondered how Kelly would be able to stay focused tonight. Oh, you didn’t hear? Someone’s room was trashed in the hotel...stuff stolen, strewn everywhere. And rumor has it....it was Kelly’s. “Happy Holidays,” Morrison told her.

(5) Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk
Dueling chants for Punk and Jericho. Shoulder take-down by Jericho as the match began slowly. Headlock take-down by Punk. Kneelift by Punk, then a hard dropkick to the back of Y2J’s head. Lots of athleticism shown early on as Punk landed a cross-body, then used his feet and legs to his advantage. Crowd began booing Punk more and more as the match went on. Punk connected on a kick to Jericho’s head and referee Charles Robinson asked if he could continue. Jericho was on the mat, dazed, as the show went to break.

[Commercial Break]

Punk tied Jericho up in the ropes after a reverse Irish whip out of break. Gut-wrench suplex as the fans were singing the Canadian National Anthem. Jericho began to feed his own kicks to Punk, then tried to suplex Punk off the top rope. Punk pushed him off as he took in the jeers with glee. Cross-body landed for two. Sudden scoop slam for two by Punk. Face-buster by Jericho that Lawler generously called a “bulldog.” Jericho went for a Lionsault but Punk put him on his shoulders. A GTS was set up, but Jericho wrapped up Punk’s legs and eventually locked in the Walls of Jericho. Punk got close to the ropes, but Jericho pulled him to the middle of the ring. Punk countered and pushed Jericho off with his legs. Jericho came right back, but he couldn’t lock the move in and Punk landed a knee-lift. Running knee in the corner by Punk, but a bulldog was shrugged off and Punk hit another foot to the temple, but he fell out of the ring and couldn’t make the pin. Jericho caught Punk with a Codebreaker as he tried a springboard cross-body. Jericho was able to crawl over to make the pin.

Winner: Jericho, at 14:45. Another solid match. Crowd, naturally, was hot for the whole thing.

-Next week’s Fatal Four-Way will include JBL, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho.

-Kelly Kelly was hurriedly leaving the arena as Todd Grisham tried to catch up with her and ask her about her match. She shouted that she had to go and Cena understands.

[Commercial Break]

-Cole and Lawler wondered who Cena would get for a partner tonight, then sent it to a video package of the Tribute to the Troops tour that aired from this past Saturday night on NBC.

-John Cena was walking backstage with a smile on his face, heading to the ring for his match.

[Commercial Break]

-Santino and Beth came out to the ring for the main event. The Glamazon fan was at ringside again with a sign. The duo only stood and looked this week without interacting. “Santino” chants from the crowd. Marella pointed out Rosa Mendes in the crowd, the world’s biggest....Santino Marella fan. Actually Beth, but whatever. Santino said she’s the #2 Santino fan then, and said that Canada is #2 to USA in pretty much anything. But they’re all behind Italy. Santino discussed what happened earlier and wanted to reveal the secret about Santa right now. Before he could, Cena’s music hit.

Cena got the mic and said he did some research and learned Santino’s secret. He said Santa was here tonight. He pointed him out in the front row. Cena said he got one Christmas wish- another tag partner. Naturally, it was Trish Stratus. Huge pop for Trish of course.

(6) Santino Marella & Beth Phoenix vs. John Cena & Trish Stratus-Mixed-Tag Match
Cena still got booed when he was in there with Santino as the two started it off. Santino got a cheap shot, then tagged in Beth after running from Cena. Crowd wanted Cena to tag Trish. He obliged. This is exciting. Beth shoved Trish, who came back with right hands. Immediately got the Matrix to avoid a clothesline, then a Thesz Press. Chops to Beth. Beth grabbed Trish by the throat, picked her up and slammed her into the corner. That was impressive. Santino went to the top, but Beth got pushed into the ropes, crotching Santino. Hurricanrana off the top by Trish. The Glamazon came back and beat down Trish. She got two on the cover. Back-breaker by Beth. And another. Right hand to the melon of Trish. “Cena Sucks” chant as the two women were in the ring. Bulldog by Trish and both women were down. Tag made to Cena as Santino came in. John hit all of his signatures spots, including the Five Knuckle Shuffle. FU Time, but Beth pulled santino down. Chick Kick by Trish to Beth and that connected with authority. FU by Cena and the faces picked up the win.

Winners Cena and Stratus, at 4:28. Odd distraction for Cena this week, but it was cool to see Trish return. The face heat couldn’t be transferred to Cena like WWE I’m sure hoped, though.

That was the best Codebreaker ever.

First WWE Champion Jeff Hardy, tonight Trish Stratus not just returning, but returning to face Beth Phoenix. Sometimes, I think this company doesn't hate me. Sometimes I think they love me. Right now, I love them right back.

It was great to see Trish back in the ring tonight! And from the little taste we got tonight, somebody needs to make Trish Stratus vs. Beth Phoenix happen (though it probably would work best in Toronto). I was surprised at how sharp Trish looked.

Can we have a Punk/Jericho match & Glamarella in the main event every week? And a chilling Orton heel promo too?

Leaping into the Codebreaker and countering the Lionsault by putting Jericho on Punk's shoulders = awesome.

43 minutes of wrestling tonight! Fantastic! That's like the last two Impacts combined.

Real good stuff in the ring tonight. And I'm really loving the fact that they went with the strongest contenders for the Fatal Fourway next week, disregarding the heel-face dynamic. I approve.

Well, the dumbass had to go cheat on her or something while they were in a real relationship last year. So I'm guessing that isn't a option for him anymore. I was really hoping he would ask her though, just to have Mickie tell him he broke her heart while Khali pops out from behind and yells something about the TV, ala Brian's breakup on 'Family Guy'.

Other thoughts:

-What was up with the HBK/Kane match? It felt like Kane was getting way too much of the offense until Shawn hit Sweet Chin Music at the end there.

-Santino calling Cena "Chaina" will always be funny.

-Kofi's slip-up while doing the 'bop, bop, bop' legdrop is going to be on the next edition of Botchmania. Other than that, an ok match between him and Manu, nothing special.

-I still don't know what to make of HBK being employed by JBL. I guess they tried to explain the plothole of Shawn not asking Triple H, but like Trips, I keeping asking why go to JBL.

-I'm confused as all hell about Kane, Kelly Kelly, & the Miz. Is she using Kane to get back at the Miz? If so, why didn't she get him to help her when Miz was in her face? And what does Cena have to do with any of this?

- I think Layla is a beautiful lady and a great valet for Regal. But the less of her I have to see wrestle, the better. I'm sorry, but geemoney was right, that was rough to watch.

-The JBL/ Rey match was decent to watch. I wouldn't had thought of these two as having good chemistry, but they do. Still, didn't like the ending. Why not have Shawn beat on or distract Mysterio and have JBL take the pin? It doesn't seem logical to have your own employee beat you for you to advance, unless they're trying to protect Rey. In which case I say is futile, since it's only a matter of time before that knee gives out... again. I have that little faith in Rey's health.

-Match of the night goes to Jericho/Punk. No surprise to me, since I think it involved the wrestler of the year (Jericho) against the breakout star of the year (Punk).

-Boo hoo hoo, Batista is hurt and out for several months. Got to say, that's fine by me. He just seemed to look very stupid as to how he was losing some of his most recent matches and I've grown tired of him being the modern day Lex Luger in being in a big spot and blowing it almost every time. I'm sure that was going to happen again if he was healthy and facing either Orton or Cena.

-Good to see Trish again and she looks great to me. The women's portion of the mix gender match was pretty good, the men's not so much but it was still ok.

Overall, a so-so first half, but Raw got pretty fun to watch with some good matches in the latter half. Not too much filler either, so a solid ep. this week.

I'm sorry. I figured Trish was gonna make her appearance once Kelly Squared left the building. Yet when her music hit I was screaming in my apartment like a girl. Several times. I'm sure I woke my neighbors. Besides Punk cashing in MITB, Stratus gave me my only other mark out moment this year.

I didn't even realize I missed her that much. I quickly forgot about the rest of the show.

Now, shouldn't Rey be livid? Shouldn't he try to cost HBK his title shot in the Fatal Fourway. Shouldn't this lead to Rey calling HBK a sellout bitch and start a vicious blood feud?

If nothing else it was a terrible call by the referee.

Trish coming back was probably the highlight of the last three months. She looks a little thinner, but seemed quicker on her move set. I love Canada on days like this where even the return of Canada's sweetheart isn't enough for people to cheer Cena. The Jericho/Punk match was very good, but the rest of the matches didn't do anything for me. Batista being gone for 6 months will now set in motion an Orton/Cena match at Mania after Orton wins at the Rumble. It does seem to me they are just telegraphing this year's Mania with JBL/HBK, probably Money in the Bank with Punk, Rey and Kane. A Legacy tag match, HHH/Taker and Edge/Jeff.

Agreed. How much better would that be than JBL/HBK?

I figured Shawn would say he would be too humbled to ask HHH, being his mentor and all. At least they tried to explain it.

Jericho/Punk was sweet. The ending reminded me of Shawn/Shelton a few years ago, which was one of the better finishes I have ever seen.

Please make Trish/Beth happen at WM 25.

Batista's really hurt? I must have missed it. Yeah, Jericho's Super-Breaker was sweet. Trish lookin less muscled and swift on her feet made my night.

So with Dave out of WM, and all the other feuds being set up...

where does that leave Jericho?

The Orton Kick of Death would be more heelish if he had a loaded boot.
Why give Mike Knox the night off? He usually has the night off when he attacks people as it is.
Mysterio would have been a better pick for the Bradshaw angle than Michaels. Of course, it is humorous to have Vince run this angle on the same day the company stock drops more than 11%.

-I still don't know what to make of HBK being employed by JBL. I guess they tried to explain the plothole of Shawn not asking Triple H, but like Trips, I keeping asking why go to JBL.

He didn't go to JBL, JBL went to him. JBL used his connections to discover that Shawn had financial problems, and then made him an offer. Shawn's too proud to ask his friends for help, but JBL wasn't his friend and wasn't just 'offering help', he wanted to put Shawn to work for him.

There are some people who are really like that. It's not too much of a stretch to assume that born-again Christian Shawn Michaels would be one of them.

-The JBL/ Rey match was decent to watch. I wouldn't had thought of these two as having good chemistry, but they do. Still, didn't like the ending. Having the match end like that helps show that while Shawn is working for JBL, he still doesn't like him. Rather than cheat behind the referee's back to beat Rey, Shawn took the chance to hit JBL, something he obviously wants to do given his dislike for the man. JBL was shocked and livid at first, until he found out that the attack gave him the match via DQ, and then he became happy. Shawn got to take out some of his frustration by hitting his evil 'employer' without earning JBL's wrath. Seems like a win/win situation to me. As for Rey?

Now, shouldn't Rey be livid? Shouldn't he try to cost HBK his title shot in the Fatal Fourway. Shouldn't this lead to Rey calling HBK a sellout bitch and start a vicious blood feud?

They've been advertising Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels for the house show coming here next month for some time now, and the events on Raw seem to finally explain why the match will happen. I'm guessing Shawn and Rey could get a one on one match at the Royal Rumble or No Way Out during the Shawn/JBL build.

People have been reading the Shawn/JBL angle as that Shawn hit JBL deliberately in front of the ref to get JBL disqualified and advance in the tournament.

I think it would be great if, at the end, Shawn just turned heel, but I doubt he would agree to that.

What's to be confused about?

While presenting together at the Slammys 2 weeks ago, Kane got it in his sick, demented mind that Kelly Kelly had the hots for him.

Last week, Kane ran in to help Kelly from a beatdown by Beth and Jillian, but he had an ulterior motive: to confront Kelly about her supposed feelings for him. He did so by trapping her in a room and intimidating her into confessing her love for him. She did no such thing and feels no such thing. Instead, Kane gleaned that she is in fact in a relationship with someone else.

Kane wants to kill this "someone else" so that he has a free road to Kelly's heart. (Again, Kane is a sick nut.) Kelly didn't want her mystery boyfriend harmed by Kane so when pressed, she lied and told Kane it was the Miz. Kelly hates the Miz from their dealings in ECW last year, so it killed two birds with one stone for her; it got her out of that room with Kane and someone she doesn't like took a Tombstone and chokeslam. To Kelly, this worked out as a way for her to finally get revenge on Miz for his role in breaking up Extreme Expose and the general shitty way he treated her in ECW last year.

This week, Stephanie McMahon forced Kane to apologize to Kelly for abducting her. Kane still wants to win Kelly's heart so the mysterious boyfriend she's protecting is still in danger.

In an unrelated matter to the Kane storyline, John Cena needed a Diva to tag with him against Glamarella. He approached Kelly to be his partner and she agreed.

Meanwhile, Miz didn't appreciate Kelly throwing him (unfairly in his mind) to Kane so he and Morrison broke into Kelly's hotel room in Toronto and trashed the place. That was their revenge for having to take a Tombstone and chokeslam Miz feels he didn't deserve.

By running off to check on her hotel, Kelly was unable to be John Cena's tag team partner, so visiting Diva and Toronto native Trish Stratus took her place as a ringer.

And that's where we are with the storyline. Again, what's so confusing?

Good to see Trish back and looking healthy. Also good to hear the "Bret chants" during the Shawn segments. Good show

I think they abandoned that possibility when HHH said he would have offered help if he knew Shawn needed it. Because the best way for a heel turn here would be "none of my so-called friends helped me out, but JBL did."

I don't even think truly aligning with JBL will turn Shawn heel at this point. He's bullet proof (except in Canada). If anything, the fans would just start cheering JBL.

Brad Pitt (who, ironically enough plays Achilles) injured his Achilles Tendon on the set of Troy. An article in the Calgary Sun talks about the injury, saying it happened during the filming of a fight scene with "a giant.
