TONIGHT: Raw is in World Champion CM Punk’s hometown of Chicago, Illinois. We’ll also (likely) get the fallout from Batista beating John Cena, the crowning of a new I.C and Women’s Champ, Chris Jericho decking HBK’s wife and hey, what about Rey’s mask in Kane’s bag?

-WWE Open.

-The Chris Jericho countdown clock and music kicked things off. Jericho was dressed in suit and tie, as usual. If they put out a DVD of just this Jericho/HBK feud, I’d buy it. Jericho said he wasn’t there to apologize about what happened at Summerslam, in fact, it should be Shawn himself apologizing. He showed what happened last night. Long pause from Chris after the video. Jericho derided HBK for making a public spectacle about his retirement, placating his ego one last time. He said HBK did it for the attention of the fans, and that they’re the ones to blame for what happened last night. Jericho said if HBK had stayed at home like he told him, none of that would’ve happened. Y2J said the last moment HBK will ever spend in a wrestling ring is cradling his wife’s head, knowing he was responsible for the injury and that he’s going to have to live with that the rest of his life. Loud “HBK” chants. Jericho said Michaels deserved it and that he had it coming. He gave one last heel look at the crowd, and headed up the ramp. I hope they started the show with this because they recognized how strong an angle it is.

[Break]

(1) Batista vs. Paul Burchill
So much for building Burchill, but I guess a loss to a guy like Batista won’t hurt him much. Cole called Burchill “a ruffian.” Burchill worked Batista’s knee to start and got a decent amount of offense in. Batista had Burchill up for a powerslam, but Burchill snuck out and chop-blocked him. Batista hit a spear out of nowhere. Spinebuster, then Batista Bomb, but Batista forgot to sit down. Still, a pin.

Winner: Batista, at 1:55. Except for the verbal fellatio Lawler was giving Batista’s match last night (one of the best he’s ever seen? Batista’s best ever? What about against Undertaker?), the match was fine. I would’ve expected them to give Cena a squash win tonight rather than Dave though.

-Mike Adamle held the mic backstage and introduced the newest member of the Raw roster, Primo Colon, the brother of Carlito. Adamle asked how it was to be on Raw and before Primo could get two words out, Adamle spotted Cena and ran after him. He tried to talk to him about his match tonight, but Cena side-stepped him when he saw Batista coming. Cena said they had a great match and the better man won. “But that was last night,” Cena quipped.

[Break]

(2) Jillian Hall & Katie Lea vs. Kelly Kelly & Mickie James
Jillian, in honor of where she was, sang a song from the band “Chicago.” Mickie handled both Jillian and Katie in the early stages. Kelly tagged in and did a backflip when Katie was holding her foot. Electric chair with a hair assist by Jillian on Kelly. The heels worked over Kelly as the crowd got behind her. Jillian mocked Kelly trying to tag, then she smacked Mickie off the apron. Mickie finally tagged in and gave a bit of a sloppy headscissors to Katie. Clotheslines from the heels. Neck-breaker on Katie, but Jillian broke up a pin. Double dropkick from the faces. Jumping DDT on Katie and it’s over.

Winners: Kelly & Mickie, at 4:55. I’m surprised Katie ate the pin. Jillian was RIGHT THERE and she’s as low on the Diva totem pole as you can get.

[Break]

-Tonight, John Cena takes on Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase in a handicap match. I don’t like the sounds of that....

(3) John Bradshaw Layfield vs. Jamie Noble
Bradshaw was the aggressor, but Noble used his speed to get around JBL. That failed when JBL caught him and gave him a fall-away slam. JBL clobbered Noble in the corner. After a few elbowdrops, JBL hit the Clothesline from Hell (no longer a lariat, I guess), that about knocked Noble silly. JBL picked him up and gave him a short-arm clothesline. And another, complete with the Marty Jannetty 360 sell. JBL went for the pin but referee Marty Elias called for the bell, stopping the match due to Noble’s condition.

Winner: JBL, at 2:51. JBL’s squashes seem to be more entertaining than his longer matches at times.

-A blockbuster announcement will be made by Stephanie and Shane McMahon next. And I’m just hearing about this now WHY?

[Break]

-They showed some Chicago Cubs players in the front row, including Ryan Dempster, a noted WWE fan.

-Mike Adamle came out to the Raw theme, clipboard in hand. He said CM Punk will battle Chris Jericho tonight. Adamle said Shane and Steph “compelled” him to make the following announcement: At Unforgiven, a new WWE Championship concept will be presented. Five superstars, including the current World Heavyweight Champion, will compete in a 20-minute match. Any superstar that makes a pin or submission on anyone else will become champion. This will continue throughout the match until the 20 minutes are up....whoever registered the last pin will be recognized as champion. The participants: CM Punk, Kane, Batista, John Cena. Ugh.

(4) Cody Rhdoes & Ted Dibiase vs. John Cena- Handicap Match
I think Lillian forgot Ted’s name during the ring intros. Cryme Tyme came out before Cena did and Shad distracted the champs as JTG stole their belts. Cena was about to lock up with Rhodes when the show went to break.

[Break]

Dibiase and Rhodes had the advantage out of break. The champs sent Cena into the barricade on the outside, ribs-first. I’m saddened that they’ve forgotten the Dibiase/Rhodes vs. Lawler/Duggan feud. Cena had a few mini-comebacks, but the heels quickly put a stop to them. I see so much of Dibiase Sr. in his son, even when he stood over Cena, arms outstretched, and yelled to the crowd. Cena was so beaten that he tried to use Rhodes to prop himself up. Then out of nowhere, he made his energy-laden comeback. Cena fought off Dibiase, then locked the STFU in on Rhodes. Submission came next.

Winner: Cena, at 12:04. Give WWE credit: It has been a while since they jobbed the tag champs in a two-on-one situation. But at least this one was competitive.

-Up next, exclusive comments from Shawn Michaels about what happened last night, recorded minutes after things went down at Summerslam.

[Break]

-They showed Harley Race in the crowd. I THOUGHT I saw him earlier when they panned the crowd.

-Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler discussed the Jericho/HBK incident last night. They showed a highlight of what happened. Cole said rumors are that Rebecca suffered a fractured jaw last night, but they don’t have confirmation. They showed Cole interviewing Shawn and his wife after the show as they were leaving. Cole asked for an update, but Michaels walked away. He walked back toward Cole and said he was going to go home, comfort his wife and kids, who just saw their mother get punched in the face because of him.

-Todd Grisham was backstage with CM Punk. He’s in his hometown and they don’t even give him an interview in the ring? Punk said Jericho did one of the “most lowest things” he’s ever seen, and that his interview tonight was a disgrace. Punk said he’d handle Jericho Chicago-style tonight. I assume that means baking Jericho in some sort of deep-dish pizza-pie.

-Glamarella came out for Santino’s first match since re-gaining the IC Title, and it’s against D-Lo Brown. Next.

[Break]

(5) Santino Marella vs. D-Lo Brown
Before the match, Kofi came out, much to Santino’s chagrin. D-Lo came off the middle rope and Santino side-stepped a dropkick, which D-Lo wouldn’t have hit even if Marella was still standing there. Yet they found a camera angle to make the replay look decent. Brown regained control and went to the top, but Beth came in the ring and stood in front of Santino so D-Lo couldn’t splash him. D-Lo told her to get to steppin’. Beth slapped D-Lo, causing a DQ.

Winner: D-Lo, at 1:38.

-Santino got clotheslined over the top by D-Lo, right in front of the announce table. Kofi stood up, but Beth ran over and pulled Marella away. Santino yelled that he was still champion, and Kofi was stupid.
-Kane was walking backstage, he’ll be out to give some answers next.

[Break]

-WWE Classics: May 2002, Smackdown Bikini Contest, which Stacy won thanks to Tajiri covering up Torrie. Then Trish came out and won it by wearing her lingerie. Of all the footage they could choose from, that made the air?

-Kane, with new music came out. He said everybody was surprised when he pulled out Rey’s mask last week. He said carrying the bag comforted him and put a smile on his face. Kane said Rey hasn’t been seen in six weeks, and there’s a reason for that. He said he never liked Rey, and he doesn’t like people who do. He called Rey a slime who hides behind a mask. He called Rey a fungus that grows in the marshes of your psyche. This is Rey Mysterio he’s talking about, right? He said he took out Rey in a parking lot, but let him live. However, his spirit is broken and dead. He started laughing, and that brought out Batista, a noted friend of Rey.

Batista speared, then hit a spinebuster on Kane. As he was about to powerbomb Kane, Kane took out Dave’s knee and chokeslammed him.

[Break]

-Cole & Lawler talked about being on Sci-Fi next week, then about the one match announced for Unforgiven.

(6) Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk
Jericho and his lackey Lance Cade strategized at the ring of the bell. Punk locked in some form of a tarantula (or octopus) on Jericho in the ropes. Jericho went for a shoulder in the corner, but instead of missing and hitting the post, he missed completely and dove outside the ring. Don’t know if he brushed the post or not, but they went to break.

[Break]

Jericho had Punk locked in a submission move out of break. Punk turned things around with a kick to the head, and both men were down. Butterfly suplex into a back-breaker by Punk for two. Knee in the corner, but Jericho countered the bulldog. He hit a Lionsault for two. He tried to lock in the Walls, but couldn’t. Punk instead hit a hurricanrana for two. Jericho locked in the Walls after he held onto the ropes on a GTS attempt. Jericho went to the top, where Punk met him with a knee. Second-rope bulldog by Punk. Punk got distracted by Cade on the apron, then Jericho pushed Punk into Cade. Codebreaker was hit, and Jericho got the win.

Winner: Jericho, at 13:58. The hometown curse continues!

There's no question at this point. Chris Jericho is this company's hottest heel act right now. I was expecting this thing with HBK to go on until Survivor Series, but it's in such a groove that it could actually drag on until Wrestlemania. Give these guys Feud of the Year right now!

I like Kane's new heel turn, but his "I don't like him and I don't like his face" explanation for taking out Rey leaves a little to be desired.

Glamarella's victory speech: http://www.wwe.com/content/media/video/vms/raw/2008/august15-21/7890990?zone=_index (wwe.com)

It's just about criminal this was left off the show. Santino's emotional breakdown is GOLD.

Good show tonight. Being the Jericho mark that I am, I've been enjoying all his stuff but as of late he's especially been on fire. I love the low-key but charged element to the promos in the feud.

I haven't been too big on WWE CM Punk, since he hasn't shown much in the ring outside of throwing knees, so for me this match tonight was his best of his run so far. The first half of it, before the last commercial break, was what I expected to see out of him from all the indy hype. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Down notes? Apparently we've turned the World Heavyweight Championship into the Attitude Era Hardcore belt with this "new" gimmick match.

And just to make sure we didn't think Super Cena was dead, he cleanly defeats the Tag Team Champions by himself. Welcome to the WWE DiBiase Jr!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

They're clearly stalling until they can move the World title to Jericho. (At least, that's what they'd better be doing.) The fact that Jericho is not in the Scramble match (which plays as an obvious way to continue stressing Punk's underdog role by having him escape with the belt at the end) is a total sign that they want to keep Punk & Jericho separated (as far as a title situation is concerned) until they're ready to end Punk's reign (and it's still too soon).

Wow, that was a lot of parentheses.

I really wish they'd give up this whole "hometown curse" thing though. Punk really could have used the win more tonight because it'll make him look stronger when he & Jericho eventually do meet for the belt. The loss wouldn't have hurt Jericho that much, but it won't hurt Punk that much either, I guess.

We need to not see Shawn for a good long while at this point. Give him the rest of the year off and then bring him back to pay this feud off at WM25.

I guess that Santino gets one escape retain against Kofi before Kofi wins the belt back.

They really need a better explanation for the Kane/Rey thing besides "I don't like his face".

Cryme Tyme hijacking the belts skeeves me a bit. They need to be careful because Rhodes & Dibiase deserve more time as champions, but Cryme Tyme needs to come out of their feud with the gold and they don't want to risk killing CT's heat by jobbing them out one too many times. I am looking forward to seeing CT's attempts to pawn off the gold over the next couple of weeks, though.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

Very questionable Raw this week.

What are the point of all of the matches of the past two months regarding anyone at the main event level?

In the past two weeks alone, we have had the following happen:
-Batista beats Cena
-Punk beats JBL
-Kane loses to Jericho (and Punk before that!)
-Punk loses to Jericho

So our next title match features all of the guys who won AND lost at SummerSlam. Hell, Kane has not beat a main event level foe since his heel turn, but hes somehow in contention over Jericho?

Cena has lost nearly all of his high profile matches this year, but he and Batista get the same shot at the title? (I guess you could argue Batista has been choking for the better part of the past two years, but come on; after all of the hype that went into Cena vs. Batista, the Winner AND Loser get the same shot?)

-JBL has blown two chances against Punk, but he gets another shot?

On to other matters:

*D'lo really needs to bring back the head wag.

*Mickie has really seemed sloppy on TV lately.

*Jericho is Amazing, I hope he and HBK blow it off at Wrestlemania, HIAC. I'd have Jericho take the title from Punk at SSeries, and keep HBK gone until the Rumble. Have him return and win it, challenging Jericho in HIAC in Houston for WM 25, Career threatening match.

*Kane's promo was good, the story he was given? Lame.

*While Punk may have lost, Jericho went out of his way to give Punk a lot of openings and cool spots (Anaconda Taranula, Submission Holds, Top-Rope Knee AND Bulldog, WELCOME TO CHICAGO MFer!.) Best match of Punk's reign thus far. Codebreaker looked great too.

Oh, and did we REALLY have to job the Tag Champs to one guy again? Palumbo, Snitsky, Regal, Haas, London, Venis. These are all names on the Raw Roster page that are doing NOTHING.

Deus Ex Ma-Kane-a? No? Nevermind.

Re: "The Championship Scramble"

1. Why did they take Adamle's thunder away by making it a Shane-Steph announcement? This incredibly stupid idea has "Adamle Original" written all over it, but now Shane & Steph get burdened with the credit for making it.

2. While the Scramble itself is a horrible idea, I kinda like how they're putting those five guys together in one match. They've been pairing off since they all confronted each other two months ago, and now it's come full circle.

hey guys I just got home from RAW It was nice to see that losing the womans belt didn't upset mickie to much.

Our dark match was Charly Hass Vs some big Asian dude who won with a drop kick of the top rope.

Then we had King Willam Regal vs some guy billed from Chicago Il. He made some short work of him.

After the show we had CM Punk Kick the crap out of lance cade. then the dark main event

CM Punk VS JBL for the world title.

Cm Punk wins and give a speach

I wasn't there as I left when Jerico hit the code breaker

It was cute / funny that with all the promos they ran during the breaks The kids behind me actualy thought Triple H and Undertaker were going to show up.

While standing out side of allstate Mike Adamly came out looking for his wife and Posed for some pics and joked around with all of us. Till some kids asked him to go get Cena and he kinda got upset.

I was originally intrigued as he was talking, thinking it might be a points type of deal...like a multiple man iron man match. Especially good if it's two points for submission, one point for pinfall, et cetera. But then my mild enthusiasm for that petered away after he said "last pinfall". Whatever.

Just get it on Jericho already.

The 'big Asian dude' was actually (of all people) Takeshi Morishima. Now THERE's a ROH guy who would fit right into the WWE heavyweight style.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The details of the show were the stuff of retards. Adamle running around backstage with a microphone like he's Todd Grisham #2. Adamle fucking up the title of the Scramble, announcing it AFTER the graphics on the Titan Tron revealed it. Not including Jericho in the Scramble, as if to say he's being held in reserve for Shawn Michaels, who has not yet revealed he's defying doctor's orders and returning. Stuff like that makes me think wrestling is fake.

But I liked the show a lot. Way better than last week's by the numbers crapfest. Very fine Divas match with Kelly still markedly improving and Mickie kicking ass (Katie Lea laid down but you can't have everything), excellent Batista squash with a vicious spear on Burchill, good Kane promo with good new/old music remix ('the wonder of the world is gone' is gone, thank God), a surprising and welcome burst of logic and continuity when Batista attacked Kane because of what Kane said he did to Rey, Glamarella was wonderful as usual, and Cena even generously sold for DiBiase and Rhodes for ten minutes before he decided to stop selling altogether, Cena'd Up, and squashed them in three moves. Honestly, I expected the squash to happen sooner so I was pleasantly surprised to get some fun double teaming in before the inevitable.

My hearty AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA lasted for what felt like hours when they jobbed CM Punk to the Codebreaker in his hometown. They finally booked Punk against a top guy his size who could make him look good and they made him stare at the lights. The reigning World Champion! I was almost in tears. Although Jim Ross would say he got off easy. Punk is the worst World Champion since Rey. I loved it. Loved it. RAW can be so much fun when you're not a CM Punk fan and you know Vince McMahon isn't either. Humiliating Punk is my Olympics.

The "Honky Donkey Man?" Oh man. That was a soda-out-the-nose moment.

- What did you have for dinner, Kane? A lil' .... Spinach?

- Katie Lea's wardrobe malfunctions made me shamelessly happy.

- Maybe it was just me, but the roof didn't exactly fly off for Punk's entrance. Maybe his promo earlier sucked some of the life out of the crowd, but Batista got a bigger pop than the hometown boy.

- Not for nothing, but any woman that's even remotely referred to an an "Amazon" should be a little taller than 5'7". Maybe hooking her up with Jamie Noble would have given more of an Amazon kind of vibe.

- Repeat after me, Mr Adamle... "Pay PER View", not "Pay FOR View". And nice interview with Carlito, V.2....

- I don't see D-Lo sticking around for much longer unless the chest protector goes back on and that head goes a-waggling again. He doesn't seem to be even remotely over.

I'm OK with Punk losing last night. He was coming off a PPV match against JBL, he lost because of interference, and he kept the title. Also, it beefs up Jericho's profile even more. Doesn't bother me at all.

My brother said the same thing ... but now, when Adamle was explaining the stipulations and stated that the final person to score a pinfall/submission would be "recognized" as the champion, does that mean that all the other pinfalls and/or submissions prior to that won't count?

In other words, it's not gonna be a matter of there being a dozen title changes that go down in the record books on that one night, but rather the final winner (unless Punk retains) will be the only one officially recognized as having secured a title change?

Oh, and how come no one's discussing Batista nearly wiping out making his way into the ring at the start of the show ... Cole actually did a halfway-decent job of "covering" for him (playing up his leg injury) but that kind of went out the window when the referee began openly pointing at him and laughing.

Adamle also said "the title will change hands multiple times" so I assume they will be counting each switch as a title change. And that's utterly ridiculous. Maybe its a reaction to Flair leaving the company. Book a few more of these and everyone can be a 16 time champion.

I would tend to agree with Alessandro's interpretation....Adamle did say the last person to get the pinfall would be recognized as champion, making it sound like the others wouldn't be. I don't know for sure, though.

Adamle also said "the title will change hands multiple times" so I assume they will be counting each switch as a title change. And that's utterly ridiculous. Maybe its a reaction to Flair leaving the company. Book a few more of these and everyone can be a 16 time champion.

I would tend to agree with Alessandro's interpretation....Adamle did say the last person to get the pinfall would be recognized as champion, making it sound like the others wouldn't be. I don't know for sure, though.

I would tend to think it's being left intentionally vague while they decide which way they want to play it.

What are the odds, though, that we have simultaneous pins at the end of the match to lead to a one-on-one encounter for the held-up title at the next PPV? Seems tailor-made for that situation.

I was guessing this would sort of be like an "Iron Man" match?

Just read on Meltzer's that the 'Prince of Punk' Shannon Moore was resigned. On the same note of the Chucky P story, it IS amazing how many mid-carders they've released then re-hired in the post- Attitude era. Will they re-team him with Hardy?
